Global2: My Blogging Story And A Showcase

This post by Kathleen Morris was originally published on The Edublogger.

It's often interesting to hear how educators got started with blogging.

Some people are told to blog. Others are encouraged by colleagues or inspired by seeing what other classes are doing.

Then there are the school trailblazers who don't know much about blogging but decide to jump in and learn as they go.

Some educators have an interest in trying blogging so they investigate what platform they should use.

Others are presented with a platform and they try it out because they can. This was my experience.

MY BLOGGING STORY

My personal blogging story began back in 2008 in my fifth year of teaching. I was teaching a grade three class in Geelong, Australia.

Always having had some interest in technology, I applied for a grant through The Department of Education and Training Victoria to have some time out of the classroom to learn more about technology integration.

This opportunity transformed my teaching career. What a luxury to have time to visit, explore, play and share!

I used one of my 'Teacher Professional Leave' days to visit the eLearning unit at the Department of Education in Melbourne. Staff members showed me various tools and introduced me to our state's CampusPress platform called Global2.

Global2 is one of the largest and longest running CampusPress networks. It serves teachers and students in Victorian Government and Catholic schools. Educators are free to set up blogs for themselves, their classes and their students. They are support by 24/7 email assistance, as well as the extensive online support materials from Edublogs.

Back to 2008. I didn't know much about blogging but was open to new ideas so I happily set up a educator blog to share all the tools and resources I was discovering as part of my Teacher Professional Leave project. I cringe to look at the quality of my first blog now but we all start somewhere!

Having set up a teacher blog, I was also keen to introduce my class to blogging. I didn't know much about the benefits of blogging but thought it would be a great way to connect with parents and a bit of fun, if nothing else.

My students and I thoroughly enjoyed blogging and by early 2009, I began to make global connections with other blogging classes around the world. My first real connection was with Linda Yollis and her class in California. Little did I know I'd hit the jackpot there!

Over the years many amazing connections were established and my students and I worked on many global collaborative blogging projects.

During my blogging journey, I also spent a few years team teaching with Kelly Jordan. I found it hugely beneficial to have one class blog, two teachers and many students working and blogging together.

My blogging journey has had many highlights so far including:

Blogging buddies at ISTE! Ronnie Burt, Julie Hembree, Kathleen Morris and Linda Yollis

Blogging Buddies at ISTE! Ronnie Burt, Julie Hembree, Kathleen Morris, Linda Yollis.

I could go on. These sorts of experiences stemmed from a simple decision to sign up for Global2 and give blogging a try.

Nearly a decade later I still host my professional blog on the Global2 network. I write about educational blogging, global collaboration, digital citizenship and technology integration.

Enough about me.

There are many other educators in Victoria doing fantastic things with their Global2 blogs. Let's take a look at a few examples.

GLOBAL2 SHOWCASE

There are thousands of educators, students and administrators using the Global2 network to create blogs, websites and portfolios.

We've showcased just ten and encourage you to share any other Global2 blogs you've come across in the comment section.

1) ST CHARLES BORROMERO (SCHOOL BLOG)

St Charles Borromeo blogThis Catholic school in Melbourne has a fantastic blog which is unique in many respects.

They began by only having teachers contribute to the blog before year 5 and 6 students became authors. They now have students from year 1 to year 6 as regular contributors. The overall management of the blog has also recently shifted from teachers to an elected 'Student Action Team'.

School ICT Leader, Frank Cotela, describes how their Student Action Team operates,

They are in charge of the rosters and we have seen a reversal of roles at our school where it is these students who approach others students, the teachers and even the principal about making sure they fulfil their blogging obligations. Positions last a term, so soon there will be an online election for a new Action Team and students will be allocated votes according to how many posts they have contributed.

This gradual release of responsibility is a fantastic way to empower students and overcome the obstacle of time that many teachers face.

Frank has found an enormous amount of learning stems from the blogging program.

Our blog is an important tool for our students to collaborate, contribute, connect, create, communicate and critique (6 Cs). But, there's an equal amount of mathematical, entrepreneurial, interpersonal learning behind the scenes with managing the blog.

Check out some of their terrific 'Blog Shows' like Around the Yard, Oliver's Australian Adventures and Junior Scientist. Presenting the menu of shows as a Google Slide presentation on a page is another excellent idea.

Other highlights on this blog include the library of eBooks created by students and the collection of student made games.

2) LEARNING WITH DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY (SCHOOLWIDE ICT)

Berwick Lodge PS blog header

Prepare to be blown away by some of the media and digital technology work being done at Berwick Lodge Primary School.

They have their own weekly television series called LODGERS which is extremely professional and nothing short of inspiring. Check it out!

If that's not enough, Berwick Lodge have their own weekly radio show, a weekly live streaming of a STEM class on YouTube, and an impressive showcase of work in the areas of robotics, coding, 3D printing and more. Wow!

This blog is truly a credit to teacher, Rob Kelly, who also has classroom teachers participate in all the lessons with their students as a form of ongoing professional development.

3) GERMAN ISLAND (LANGUAGE LEARNING RESOURCES)

Screenshot of German Island Blog HeaderTeacher, Roslyn Green created this blog in 2011 when she was in the process of learning German herself. It's always so powerful when teachers show that they too are learners!

In the last few years, Nathaniel Smith and Jana Kühn have also become authors.

The blog houses study materials for teachers and students including links, ideas, quizzes, videos, worksheets, and lots of information and strategies that may be useful for German language learners.

4) PREP COMMUNICATION BLOG (CONNECTING WITH FAMILIES)

A blog that is updated regularly is particularly useful to families.

This blog for students in their first year of school is an credit to the Prep team at Princes Hill Primary School.

It offers lots of updates and reminders on administrative matters while showcasing student learning.

It's safe to say, parents would love this virtual window into the classroom.

5) ENCORE PODCAST (NEW FROM GRADE 5/6)

encore podcast blog screenshotTraditionally a blog would contain simply text and images. The nature of blogs is evolving and the possibilities are endless. This Global2 blog is used to broadcast a podcast.

The Encore podcast is run by grade 5/6 students at Fyans Park Primary School who interview people from the school community on a weekly basis.

They use a tool called Spreaker to embed the podcast into the blog.

Members of the school community are encouraged to get involved via the comment section of this blog as well.

6) KOROROIT CREEK MUSIC BLOG (STUDENT MUSIC RESOURCES)

Kororoit Creek Music blog screenshotThis comprehensive primary school blog is used as an online homework platform for instrumental music students.

It uses pages to divide resources into grade levels and subject areas. Students can find: sheet music, chords, lyrics, videos, audio files and more.

Kororoit Creek Primary School also has some other great blogs in different specialist departments such as French, Art and Physical Education.

7) A GLIMPSE INTO GRADES 5/6 AT BELL PS (TEAM BLOG)

A Glimpse into grade 5 6 screenshot

This is a blog run by the grade 5/6 team at Bell Primary School.

A team blog can be a great way to connect classes and present a united approach to the curriculum and school programs.

This blog showcases student work as well as providing recounts, housekeeping information for families, and homework resources.

Some other areas of Bell Primary School use blogs including the Prep team (kindergarten) and the Music/Visual Arts Department.

8) RINGWOOD SECONDARY COLLEGE LIBRARY

Ringwood Secondary College library

This is a comprehensive school library website. The home page is used to showcase new additions to the library while pages are used to house useful resources by year level according to subjects being studied.

It is clear that the school library staff work closely with students and teachers to support everyone's needs.

9) THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX (PRIMARY ICT BLOG)

Think Outside the box screenshot

This is a very practical ICT specialist class blog from St Robert's Primary School.

There are pages for each year level that link to lesson resources. The blog also provides relevant information on digital citizenship and other topics.

There are links to other school blogs and wikis that showcase student work. Overall, this is a useful and well organized hub for the ICT subject area.

10) DIGITAL LEARNING NEWS (DET)

Digital Learning News screenshot

The Learning and Teaching Branch of the Victorian Department of Education and Training uses this blog to share digital learning news.

This site is a hub for educators and schools looking for professional development news and resource collections.

Educators across the state are encouraged to subscribe to blog updates.

Why You Will Never Make Money Blogging (And How To Change That)

Let me start you off with this simple truth:

  • You will never make money as a blogger if you continue to do the wrong things.
  • Albert Einstein's great quip sums this up – "It is sheer insanity to do something over and over again and expect a different result."

Many new bloggers are lost in thoughts of being able to travel the world and spend time in expensive hotels eating the best meals. While this is a possible feat to achieve, it sure takes a lot of guts and time in getting to this place of tremendous achievement.

Daniel Lyons (Fake Steve Jobs) confirmed that, "While blogs can do many awesome things, making lots of money isn't one of them."

He was right, if you ask me.

Your blog isn't a money printing machine; rather, it's a tool used for reaching the world with your valuable products/services… and possibly making money in the process.

Of course, it takes a lot of work. You must be willing to go through the process patiently, and if you do, success will surely come.

I love Whitney Young Jr.'s great quote, "It's better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have an opportunity and not be prepared for it."

The latter part of the quote paints a typical blogging situation- someone who has a chance at becoming one of the most respected people in the annals of the world, but loses out by reasons of unpreparedness.

In this post, I will reveal to you the reasons why you will never make money blogging in 2017. Aside from that, I'll also show you how you can reverse this and build a money-making blog right now.

    Are we still together?

    Let's dive in!

    1. You don't have a concrete business model.

    Concrete business model

Now, before I explain what a business model is and how to set up one for your business, let me quickly tell you why the lack of one is ruining your blogging business.

When you don't have a system or a plan that encourages or pushes you to take the necessary actions in your business, you risk losing your enthusiasm and passion which will eventually result in the death of your blog.

So what is a business model?

The term "business model" can be defined in so many ways…

For the sake of this tutorial, I will describe a business model simply as a plan or design for the successful operation of a business, the intended customer base, the identified revenue sources, products, and sources of financing.

Similarly, Wikipedia defined it as: "an abstract representation of a business, be it conceptual, textual, and/or graphical, of all core interrelated architectural, co-operational, and financial arrangements designed and developed by an organization presently and in the future, as well as all core products and/or services the organization offers, or will offer, based on these arrangements that are needed to achieve its strategic goals and objectives."

One of the mistakes often made by bloggers is in thinking that a business model is all about saying: "I want to make money."

Honestly, if you put the "making money" thing as the primary reason for starting your business, you're already doomed.

Money shouldn't be your focus when starting out online as a blogger. The focus should be on creating systems; that includes creating significant and valuable content that takes a reader from where they are to where they ought to be.

Distilling it down, a good business model will let you:

  • Identify who your target audience is.
  • Identify revenue sources.
  • Figure out how to serve your customers. (With text, videos, audios, infographics, etc.?)
  • Identify products to create that will further educate your audience on what you currently teach them via your blog posts. (Example: You can create and sell an eBook.)
  • Identify where will you get funds and how will you continue to invest in your business to stay relevant in the marketplace.
  • Find the best promotional strategies to get your business out there.
  • These are just some of the things to consider when creating a plan/model for your business.

This is a very important step when starting out as a blogger.

You must give it maximum attention.

    For further reading:

    2. You are not concerned about value.

    Making Money Blogging

Like I mentioned, you will never make a single dime blogging if you concern yourself too much about making money.

Making money from blogging does not come overnight. I've been in the internet marketing and blogging niche longer than most of you, and I've never seen anyone that launched one day and started seeing money roll in the next day.

    It doesn't happen.

Forget all those adverts hovering over the web about how Jack made $$$$$$ within 48 hours of launching his business. If it actually worked that way, everyone would be doing it.

Here's what you need to remember:

  • If you want to make real money in the real world, you need to solve real problems.
  • If you're serious about making money, learn to shift focus on wanting to be a quick and overnight success to providing a lot of value to your readers

Value is what sells you and your products, and it is what ultimately helps you to achieve your money-making goals.

According to Copyblogger, "If you don't offer customers something they dearly want, whether it's to gain some great pleasure or escape some great pain, you're not going to make any money."

    3. You are not asking the right questions.

    Ask Blogging Questions

I constantly get readers of ShoutMeLoud asking me:

  • How do I make money blogging?
  • How can I get traffic to my blog?
  • How can I build influence and get blog engagements?
  • While all these questions are great, there's always something wrong with the phrasing.

    Example:

Don't ask: "How can I get traffic?"

Ask: "Is my blog capable of getting traffic?"

A lot of the time, people come into the online space to build blogs, publish some crappy content, and splash ads all over the place expecting to make lots of money.

Well, it doesn't work like that!

You have got to push yourself really far by asking the right questions and doing the right things if you want to attract the right people in order to maybe make money blogging.

For instance, if your article headline is not engaging and compelling enough, it won't attract visitors to stop over and read the article. The same thing applies to your content; if it sucks, no one will want to engage with your blog.

You have to give people a good reason to leave your competitor's site and read yours.

    How do you do that?

It's mostly about creating informative and entertaining content that readers will find hard to ignore.

Don't do what everyone else is doing. Write in your own unique voice, and soon, people will start noticing your unique and outstanding approach.

That's when they will fall in love with you and make your blog their new dwelling place.

How To Make Your Blog A Success

If you take the time to really read through this post, you will definitely go from making nothing to making a substantial income as a blogger.

Many people are already doing it, and there's no reason you can't be doing it too.

You just need to make sure you're doing the right things.

Don't fall into the "make money online" trap. Nothing can replace hard work and dedication.

When people can see that you care about what you do, they'll learn to respect and trust you as an authority in your niche.

When that happens, the money will start rolling in.

What are some common blogging mistakes you often see in the blogging world? Which one of these mistakes are you guilty of? Let me hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Tumblr founder leaving Yahoo-owned blogging platform

(MENAFN - AFP) Tumblr founder and chief David Karp on Monday announced he is leaving the nearly 11-year-old blogging platform -- with his departure coming in the wake of Verizon buying parent-company Yahoo.

Karp said that he will leave by the end of this year and chief operating officer Jeff D'Onofrio will take his place at the helm of Tumblr.

"I beg you to understand that my decision comes after months of reflection on my personal ambitions, and at no cost to my hopefulness for Tumblr's future or the impact I know it can have," he said in a copy of a letter to employees that he posted online.

Karp founded Tumblr in New York in early 2007 as a platform where people could share writing and short-form media. Now, Tumblr hosts some 380 million different blogs.

"We made it really, really simple for people to make a blog and put whatever they want on it. Stories, photos, GIFs, TV shows, links, quips, dumb jokes, smart jokes, Spotify tracks, mp3s, videos, fashion, art, deep stuff," reads a self-description on the website.

Yahoo acquired Tumblr in May 2013 for $1.1 billion, as part of an effort to better connect with younger online users.

Meanwhile, Verizon's online unit Oath -- which includes the AOL and recently acquired Yahoo brands -- is cutting several hundred jobs as part of a reorganization, a source familiar with the move said earlier this month.

The reductions represent "less than four percent" of the Oath global workforce of an estimated 12,000, according to the source.

The move represents a second round of cuts at Oath since the $4.5 billion acquisition of Yahoo in June.

"We're about four months post-close of Verizon's acquisition of Yahoo, and we've made these changes to our team to further align our global organization to our 2018 roadmap," Oath said in a statement at the time.

Media reports said the move would eliminate an estimated 560 jobs in different Oath business units such as advertising and engineering.

Verizon has so far maintained the Yahoo brand, which has some one billion users worldwide for its email, news and other services.

Yahoo's sale capped a long decline from when it had a peak market value of some $125 billion in 2000.

Ditch Your To-Do List to Achieve Your Blogging Goals

Ask any blogger what they're working on and they'll usually respond with a laundry list of items that are required to keep a website running: writing, coding, photography, branding, promotion, social media management, networking. The list goes on and on. The sheer number of tasks that are supposed to be completed each day is already immense and it seems the so-called experts are adding more all the time. Whether blogging is your full-time gig or your side hustle, the fact is: there aren't enough hours in a day to even begin to tackle all of the things you think you should be doing and so, your to-do overflows. Some things get accomplished because they're fast or easy or you just can't put them off any longer. Others stay on the list so long they ultimately get forgotten and discarded in a pile of the good ideas and unfinished projects that you just never got around to.

The truth is that a to-do list is a terrible productivity tool.

Sure, crossing off finished tasks comes with its own sense of satisfaction and accomplishment, but who hasn't spent the day working on your to-do list only to look at the clock, realize you've spent hours and still feel like you haven't really achieved anything important? Where exactly does the time go? Time is the one resource that none of us can create. We all get 24 hours a day. And yet, we waste time working hard on tasks that are busy work. A to-do list can tell you all the things you would like to complete. It can tell you all the things the experts think you should be doing. It can track all the things you would like to do if you had all the time in the world, but it can't help you get more done and it can't help ensure the tasks you work on are the right tasks to help you achieve your goals for your blog.

    Productivity Over Busyness

Our society has this weird tendency to be in awe of the busy person. Being busy is a badge of honor that proclaims us to be a better adult than those around us. People assume that because you're very busy, you must be getting a lot of important things done. This is false. Ticking a lot of items off your list isn't really productive. Productivity is about getting the best possible result for the least amount of effort. If you want to be truly productive and start crushing your blogging goals, you need to ditch your to-do list and start scheduling your time instead.

Ditch Your To-Do List to Achieve Your Blogging Goals

Get More Done By Scheduling Your Time

Time scheduling is a trick used by some of the most successful people in the world. Millionaires, CEOs, Olympic athletes, and more all use scheduling to ensure that they are focusing their time on what matters to them most. It's a proven fact that an uncompleted to-do list can be a powerful demotivator and most people struggle to differentiate between urgent tasks and important tasks. For example, responding to blog comments in a timely fashion is an urgent task, but it's only an important one if your responses generate more engagement from your community.

Tips for Effectively Scheduling Your Blogging Tasks

  • Decide how much time you are able to spend working on your blog and when you are going to commit to working on your blog. If you plan to work on a task "when you have time", it might never get achieved. If you plan to work on it Saturday at 2 pm you stand a much better chance of completing it. Try to set aside time to work on your blog when you feel you're at your best.
  • Schedule time for tasks your blog cannot survive without. For most people, this boils down to two tasks: create content and maintain your website. Schedule time every week to work on those items.
  • Prioritize the things you want to do by how effective they will be in helping you meet your blogging goals. If you want to increase engagement, you might decide that responding to comments or participating in Twitter chats are the best use of your time. If your goal is to increase traffic, participating in Boosts or creating images for specific social networks might be a better way to go. If your goal is to generate income, you might spend your time pitching brands or working on your affiliate programs. Decide what blogging tasks are essential to you. No two blogs will have the outlook on which tasks are most important and that is OK. We've all got to decide what is essential to us.
  • Decide how long you need to spend on each of those tasks to get the desired results. Be realistic and make sure you plan to give yourself enough time to complete the task well. It's better to do a small number of things fantastically than to do a large number of things kind of ok. Allow yourself a bit of extra time in case a task ends up being more complicated than you expected or if you run into technical difficulties.
  • Once you know how long to spend on each item, block that time out in your planner and treat it like you would a meeting or appointment: Pick a time, show up and do the work.
  • At the scheduled time, sit at your desk or work area.  Focus solely on the task at hand. Put all your energy into completing the one task that you are scheduled to work on and complete it well. Resist distractions or other tasks that might pull you in. For longer work sessions, consider using the Pomodoro Technique.
  • Regularly schedule the time to review your efforts and determine if the tasks you are focusing on are achieving the desired outcomes. If they aren't, reassess what you're doing, brainstorm other ways to achieve that goal and try again.
  • Make sure you schedule time for big projects and continued education. Challenges like the Social Media Holiday Challenge or the Boost Your Blog 10K Challenge can make a huge impact on your success as blogger, but if you don't schedule the time to work on them, you may not get the desired results or worst, you'll be left feeling like you're behind, can't catch up and abandon the project altogether.
  • You're not going to get it all done. There are too many things and never enough hours, but respecting your blog, scheduling the time to nurture it and sticking to that schedule can help you focus more on the things that can really impact on your traffic, your engagement and your income and help you waste less time lost on the internet.

Reminder: The Boost Your Blog 10K Challenge starts Monday! Check out our custom task reminder stickers to help you schedule the time to crush this challenge and grow your blog.

There are five different sticker sets, so download all five PDFs here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Simply download and print. You can print on computer paper, cut them out, and glue them into your planner. Or, you can print them on sticky paper to DIY planner stickers.

What is your best productivity tip? How do you keep distractions at bay and focus on the task at hand?

17+ Guest Blogging Rules All Blog Managers Wish You Knew

    guest-blogging

Miss Manners hasn't written the handbook on how to be a good guest blogger. Yet, anyone who manages an organization's blog likely has run into guest bloggers (or wannabe guest bloggers) who focus too much on the "blog" part and not enough on the "guest" part.

Writers focus too much on the "blog" part and not enough on the "guest" part, says @AnnGynn. #Guestpost Click To Tweet

If your content marketing strategy includes guest blogging, you'll set your efforts up for success if you (or your writer) understand how to be a good guest.

Following your host's lead is the key to being a good guest at someone's home, and the same applies to guest blogging. But there's a unique golden rule for guest bloggers: Read the guidelines. Reread the guidelines. And when you think you're done, use the guidelines as a final checklist.

Golden rule of guest #blogging: Read the guidelines. Follow them. Read them again. @AnnGynn. Read more >> Click To Tweet

Now, keep reading to learn more tips, from the deceptively simple to the complex, about how to be a successful guest blogger in the eyes of your potential host.

    Pick your target(s)

Guest blogging is an excellent opportunity for your content marketing strategy to extend your reach beyond the four virtual walls of your brand. It gets your content in front of fresh eyes, secures quality backlinks from authoritative domains, and increases your social-sharing opportunities.

The first step – before you focus on the guest work – is to figure out which sites reach the people you want to reach and which domains offer more credibility to your content and brand.

    Do your homework

Don't dive into picking a topic to write about without investigating the blog(s) you selected. (Well, first determine if the site has a blog. Yes, that's a real step. I know brands that have received fully written guest posts even though they didn't have a blog.)

Answer these questions about the blog:

  • Who is the site's target audience? Always write with the audience in mind.
  • What are the identified categories and tags for posts? These topics indicate the brand's SEO and the audience's intent – potential subject matter for your post.
  • Does the blog include bylines? If it doesn't, decide whether the site's value to your brand is sufficient without a byline.
  • How frequently does it publish blog posts? If the blog isn't updated regularly or frequently, there are fewer opportunities for guest blog posts.
  • TIP: If your strategy calls for guest blogging on multiple sites, put together a spreadsheet to record your answers to these questions for each blog.

If your answers indicate the blog is a good fit for your goals, proceed to the next step.

    Review the guidelines

If the site accepts submissions or pitches from potential guest bloggers, it likely offers submission guidelines or at least some basic details on the process. If you're having trouble finding them, search for "blogging guidelines" and the site name.

Remember the golden rule of guest blogging? Read the guidelines. Then read them again – beginning to end. If the site asks you to submit an expression of interest form, fill it out as completely as you can. If the site guidelines request a completed article, don't submit a pitch and if it requests a pitch, don't submit a completed article. If a bio is requested with the submission, provide one. Believe it or not, following directions really is half the battle to acceptance.

Guest bloggers: If the site #blogging guidelines request a completed article, don't submit a pitch. @AnnGynn Click To Tweet Create unique, relevant content

With your knowledge of the blog and the brand, including its categories and tags, select a relevant topic. But keep these guidelines in mind.

    Give the topic a twist

Come up with an uncommon angle, which ensures that your content will provide a fresh take on the topic for the site's submission reviewer and the audience.

TIP: An easy way to review what's been published on a particular topic is to click on the category or other tags to see all the posts on that subject.

Don't think too far outside the box

Avoid submitting on a radically different topic or format. While experimentation can be smart for your own blog, it's best to be a guest who wants to fit into your host's environment. For example, if the blog has never published an infographic, think twice about submitting a standalone infographic as a guest blog post (or, at least ask before you do). And I wouldn't recommend that you try to convince the brand to expand its focus to your particular format or topic of interest.

    decrease-likelihood-post-acceptance

Avoid submitting a #guestpost on a radically different topic or format, says @AnnGynn. Read more >> Click To Tweet Write for their audience

Your article should fit in seamlessly for the reader, who may or may not know you're a guest. In addition to matching the blog's style, write from a reporter's perspective (not a marketer's) – provide factual content to inform, educate, or entertain the audience. If you want your submissions to be accepted, don't think of guest blog posts as disguised ads for selling your products or services or a way to get as many backlinks as possible. Instead, focus on how your article can help the audience.

Don't think of #guestposts as disguised ads for selling your products. Focus on helping your audience. @AnnGynn Click To Tweet Submit original content

Most blogs don't accept content that's been published elsewhere. If you submit it anyway – hoping the earlier publication may never be discovered – you risk getting blacklisted. Or if the blog you're approaching does republish content, disclose it in your submission with phrasing such as "originally published on ABC Blog on July 5, 2017."

    content-quality-requirements

    Write to an appropriate length

If the blogging guidelines don't specify a word count, spot-check the length of existing content and find a place in the middle. Writing too long or too short diminishes the likelihood of acceptance.

Make sure all facts are correct and all statements attributed appropriately

For example, don't include a statistic quoted by another blog – even if you link to that blog. Go to the native source. If you can't find the original source for a fact, reconsider using it.

If you can't find the original source for a fact, reconsider using it, says @AnnGynn. #blogging Click To Tweet Follow the stylebook used by the site

Blog submission guidelines often specify the site's stylebook, whether that's AP Style, Chicago Manual of Style, etc. In some cases, the guidelines will include the dictionary of choice (yes, not all dictionaries have the same entries).

Don't agonize over formatting to create a beautiful submission

That's a pain for many sites that must strip formatting to conform to their own style guides.

    Respect the process

Follow the steps provided by the site to submit your content. (Yes, it's that golden rule of guest blogging rising up again.)

Make the case for your content

If there's an opportunity to craft an introductory email, make it brief but intriguing. Customize it for the site to show you know the audience and the purpose of the blog – and why your authorship and article should work well. As Mike Fishbein says (and does), "Introduce yourself and state some accomplishments to build authority, social proof, and rapport."

Share accomplishments to build authority & rapport when crafting an intro email. @mfishbein #Guestpost Click To Tweet

    guest-post-email-request

Establish your credibility (and prove people want your content)

Cite relevant outlets where you've published content, and, if possible, demonstrate your content's effectiveness, e.g., "My guest blog post earned the most shares the month it was published."

TIP: If the guidelines don't spell out the review time frame, it's OK to ask. But when you find out it takes three to four weeks, don't follow up five days later. Lean more toward following up around four weeks.

If the #blogging guidelines say it takes 3 to 4 weeks for review, don't follow up 5 days later, says @AnnGynn. Click To Tweet Scrutinize feedback

If you're asked to revise the post, closely review the comments and questions posed. Decide if you're willing to make the necessary changes or if you want to withdraw the post and submit the original to another blog site. Let the original blog know if you decide to withdraw.

If you decide to revise the post, confirm with the site editors that you will provide a new version by the deadline they assign. Then, make sure you address any feedback sufficiently and entirely. Read through the provided comments several times. When you think you're done with the revised post, use the feedback as a checklist to verify that you addressed everything requested.

    Don't stop at publication

You can celebrate when your guest blog post is accepted, but your work isn't done.

Guest #blogging doesn't stop when your post is published. Promote, respond, monitor. @AnnGynn Click To Tweet Promote your content

Share your article on appropriate social media channels and include links to the original post like this example from prolific guest blogger Aaron Orendorff.

TIP: John Hall suggests promoting your content in relevant LinkedIn groups to drive traffic to the article as well as the publisher's site.

Promote #content in relevant #LinkedIn groups to drive traffic to article & publisher's site. @johnhall Click To Tweet Engage with your readers

Read and respond to all comments posted on the blog site. Also, track where the article is promoted on social media and interact with any comments posted there.

    Follow up

Check in with the blog editor or director. Send a thank-you email or handwritten note right away. Then, in a month or so, reach out to see how well he or she thought the post performed based on the brand's goals.

TIP: Some blogs share publicly the number of direct tweets and shares from the post.

Review the performance feedback to evaluate the success of the article. If it didn't do well, what may have been the hurdle? Was it the headline, audience, topic, approach? If it did do well, track the stats and share in future introductions for other guest blogging opportunities (and even ask the blog editor if he or she would like another post from you).

    Conclusion

If you see the value in incorporating guest blogging into your content marketing strategy, invest the extra time to be a good guest. By exploring the host blog, creating content around a topic relevant to its audience in an appropriate format, and promoting your post and the site, you'll exceed your host's expectations – and you're likely to receive an invitation to return.

Blogging niches - what's too broad?

    Hi guys,

It's my first time on here, so I hope I'm posting in the correct sub-forum.

I would like to start my own blog soon, and I understand the importance of sticking to a particular niche or audience. Now I want to write about three main topics, which are all fairly big - making money (which may include blogging later down the line if I do well myself, but initially things like side hustles), self development (productivity, motivation) and health/wellness (but mostly tying this to having extra energy for your business, how it translates to success, etc). I was thinking of having those three categories. However, I'm worried that if someone finds my post on a health topic, they'll see that my blog isn't in on health and fitness and that I write a lot about money, and leave...or vice versa. However, I want to emphasise how the three elements can tie together to create success. Do you think this is a feasible idea?

Alternatively, I could have two sections - one on making money, one on general success (both self development and health-related topics)?

Also, if I have such a website, do you think it'd be ok for my partner and I to launch a family lifestyle blog later down the line?

    Thanks everyone!
