Los Angeles Rams At Dallas Cowboys: Q&A With Blogging The Boys

The Los Angeles Rams are facing the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4 in a huge NFC matchup. Both teams are looking to set out a 3-1 start to the 2017 regular season and set the bar in their respective divisions.

To get a better understanding of what we're facing, I linked up with Dave Halprin from Blogging The Boys, the SB Nation community for Cowboys fans.

So we did this about a month and half ago ahead of our preseason opener against each other. What have you learned about the 2017 Dallas Cowboys that you had 0 clue of back then?

One thing I ahve learned is that our offensive line has not gelled together and it might have a weak link. The Cowboys running game isn't what it was last year and we are trying to break in a new left guard and right tackle. Right now, it's not working nearly as well as it should. I'm concerned about the play of left guard Chaz Green the most, but Jason Witten has also had some poor blocking recently.

Another thing we learned is that we actually have a pass rush! DeMarcus Lawrence has been a beast in the first three games, and he's also getting help from 3-tech Maliek Collins. We weren't sure about the defensive line play going into the year, it has been a surprise.

Bonus thing we learned: Jaylon Smith's knee is holding up, he's played a lot of snaps.

What's holding back the Cowboys offensively? Perhaps I'm not phrasing that question appropriately though. If not, lemme try it this way. For the Cowboys to be "successful" this year in whatever that means to your fan base, what does the offense need to do? Is it as simple as coming through in the big moments as they did on Monday and perhaps not more comprehensively dominant performances?

I think a lot of it has to do with what I mentioned above. The reason the Cowboys offense worked so well in recent years was that the offensive line was dominant, allowing the team to impose its will through the running game, and then use an efficient passing game to complement it. So far, our running attack has been mediocre at best. Dak Prescott also started off a little slow in the passing game, but seems to be finding his groove again. The Cowboys need to let Dak run more read-option plays to make defenses a little less aggressive, and they need to get him outside the pocket some more where he seems to do very well.

Maybe the offensive line will round into form and the running game will pick up, but the Cowboys can help compensate for it by getting Dak more involved.

On the defensive side, what are the concerns? Obviously a potential injury to MLB Sean Lee is its own concern, but skill-wise what are the biggest holes on the defensive depth chart?

Yes, any injury to Sean Lee is a huge concern. He is the quarterback and leader of the defense. One concern is the inexperience in the secondary. We have rookies playing a lot of snaps because of injuries, and we have elevated a player (Jeff Heath) to a starter that had previously been more of a role player. So route recognition, reading the quarterback, being in the correct coverage on every play, a lot of these things are natural for vets but can be challenging for younger players. Also, the Cowboys lack a speed rusher. DeMarcus Lawrence is killing it, but he's more of a strength, technique guy. The Cowboys could use a pure speed rusher to complement him.

Are any of the new personnel (rookies or free agents) having a major impact? I know Chidobie Awuzie was out on Monday, but are any of the rookies making 2017 look different than 2016?

Rookie cornerback Jourdan Lewis looks like a baller. With Nolan Carroll, Orlando Scandrick and Chidoeb Awuzie out at various times because of injury, Lewis has been thrust into major reps and has looked like he could be a real find. He's small, but isn't afraid to make tackles. He has one interception already and is learning on the fly. Rookie safety Xavier Woods, to a lesser extent, looks like someone who can contribute. And rookie WR Ryan Switzer has started to pay dividends in the punt return game. Last week he helped set up Dallas for a touchdown. One free agent who has helped is nose tackle Stephen Paea. He's a good run-stopper, space-eater.

Overall, what's the feeling of expectations and trajectory for you guys? Obviously given last year, fans are going to demand nothing less than a return to the postseason, yeah? And whatever the demands are thereafter, are you comfortable that the team is shaping up to meet them at least through three games?

Right now, we're kind of unsure of where we are as a team. We dominated the Giants offense in the first week, but as we're learning they are not a good team. During that game the offense struggled. Then came the fiasco in Denver that had everybody concerned that this team wasn't anything like last year's. Both sides of the ball were terrible. The game last week against the Cardinals restored some confidence, but there are still flaws with this team. It's hard to gauge exactly where we are, but the expectations are still there that this team will make the playoffs and do some damage in the post-season. If they fall short of that, fans, and I imagine the front office, will be very unhappy.

Thanks to Dave for the time.

Blogging idol – glancing back after a decade

I started blogging almost 10 years ago as part of IT World Canada's "Blogging Idol" contest. While the contest rules evolved over the few years it existed, Blogging Idol started off simply enough: contestants were given a set of topics and a fixed number of weeks to post blogs, with one topic per week. The goal was to get as much traffic as possible.

One of my first posts, on May 24, 2008, was called "Professional designation for IT managers: Why Not?" Unfortunately, the actual content seems to be lost (the titles and dates are still listed but the technology has changed along the way). During the 2008 contest, I wrote about wireless, IT standards (a favourite topic of mine), ITIL certifications and several other topics. In June 2008 I was selected as the Blogging Idol for the year.

Cloud computing was already a popular topic in 2008, even though I would not get involved in ISO cloud standards development for two more years.  Some of my blog titles were:

  • Cloud Computing – A Bit of "Whether" Forecasting – June 2, 2008
  • Cloud Computing – An Easy Sell? – June 5, 2008
  • Is Computing Like electricity? – June 7, 2008
  • Final thoughts on cloud computing – June 9, 2008
  • Of course, at the time Amazon had introduced its Elastic Compute Cloud (August 2006) and Microsoft was close to announcing Azure in October 2008. Since that time, we have seen cloud computing become more and more mainstream, and more formalized (NIST and ISO/ITU have published standards). Concerns with security and privacy have mostly been overcome, and the use cases are continuing to expand (especially with IoT). Cloud computing has crossed the chasm!

A recent article in Network Computing listed six key milestones in networking: Internet, Ethernet, the router, VLANs, firewalls, and Wi-Fi. There are, of course, many other possibilities for such a list, and I have no doubt that cloud computing (and other recent technologies) will eventually be viewed as a milestone in the history of ICT.

There's been lots of progress in a single decade. In 2010, the focus was on how IaaS, PaaS and SaaS differ and how they fit together in public and private clouds.  Now, the debate is about more complex configurations including hybrid cloud, inter-cloud, multi-cloud, multi-provider cloud, edge computing, containers, serverless computing and hyper-convergence. We are also trying to make sense of how big data, AI, IoE, mobility, chatbots, voice and blockchain can all fit together as part of a cloud-based, shared IT ecosystem, and how they can all be combined to meet the needs of business, homes and bodies (i.e., wearables). There's even talk about the Internet of Cows.

My more recent blog titles illustrate the differences in the conversation today:

These topics are an indication that cloud computing has become a standard option for designers and that we are building on it as an accepted base, not trying to justify it.

The next question is: what will the blogs be discussing 10 years from now?

Looking back over my blogging efforts, another point is clear – blogging itself (and content publishing in general) has also changed over time. Anyone can now easily set up a website and generate content.  Everyone can write on social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram. Blogs are no longer restricted to simple text – they can even be transformed into webinars or interviews. There is much more competition for good writers; I believe better content is the result.

However, the amount of information being made available can be overwhelming, both on the production side and as an avid reader!

This is what I've been thinking. Are there any "alternative facts" out there?

Top 4 Vlogging Cameras: Meet Your Video Blogging Essentials

Top 4 Vlogging Cameras: Meet Your Video Blogging Essentials www.sleeklens.com

One of the most important tools when it comes to vlogging is something to actually record the video. With all the different brands and camera types out there is sometimes hard to know which one is actually the camera for you. You may have cameras that have all the bells and whistles you need but doesn't match your budget. Then you have others that are a bit underpriced but they don't have all that you'll need. In this article, I will be providing a small list of the Top 4 cameras for vlogging. It will encompass detailed information on specifications and just some of my personal opinions on each camera or camcorder. This is your first investment into what can actually become a career or make you the next internet sensation on youtube on Instagram. I will do my best to mention cameras for those who are looking for a bit more than your usual vlogging tool and others that don't need much but would like to get some good quality video.

    1. Canon T5i

As a Canon user, you know it only right I begin with Canon. The Canon T5i is actually an Impressive, yet inexpensive tool for your vlogging purposes. It is equipped with a touchscreen monitor and Full HD recording. Having used this camera a few times to capture some videos, I must say I was impressed with the quality I received. The body is not too bulky and could easily fit in a camera bag or knapsack without taking up too much space. Also, this camera offers to you a wide range of options when it comes to purchasing lenses in the future. After a while, you will notice where your kit lenses are not really getting the job as great as you would want it to. Therefore when the time comes to purchase lenses you'll find yourself saving a lot of money.

    canon t5i

    2. GoPro Hero 4

If you are someone who finds themselves travelling a lot and doing extreme activities then this is definitely the one for you. The GoPro series action cameras were initially made for your active user who would like to vlog or document different experiences without having to worry about camera weight, water damage or even video quality. There are so many accessories out there for this bad boy it's ridiculous. The camera is ideal for almost any situation when it comes to vlogging. It can be mounted on almost anything without hassle or worry and provide great video quality.

    gopro hero 4 black

Speaking about video quality, the GoPro Hero 4 offers video in 4K and is no bigger than the palm of your hand. How crazy is that? Apps are also available for download so you are able to control your camera from just your phone for seamless video transitions. So many times I've seen videos begin on youtube with the person pressing the record button and then stepping back from the camera. The GoPro Hero 4 carries a price tag of just about $270 on Amazon and accessories can also purchase ranging from $15 to $100 dollars.

    3. Panasonic Lumix GH4

When it comes to video quality and control, this Panasonic Lumix GH4 is in the top 5. It is also equipped with 4K video recording as well as Ultra HD 4k video recording. If that doesn't blow away some of your viewers then I don't really know what will. It also carried a pretty hefty price tag of around $1000 USD on Amazon. With all, it has to offer I would say that is a reasonable price tag if you really want some high-quality vlogs. Otherwise, there is a cheaper option that can provide 4K quality video without the 4K quality price tag.

    Panasonic Lumix GH4

    4. Sony A7

This is one of my personal favorites next to the Canon T5i. This camera is a monster in a small mirrorless body. It carries 1080P in Video quality with the capability of actually shooting slow motion videos in camera. this feature blew me away in regard to HD in-camera slow motion feature. It also carries a full-on HDMI port for your viewing on any television you choose. It is almost as small as a regular point and shoot camera but don't be fooled by its size.

    sony a7

Always gets me how my Canon is so huge and bulky and can't-do some of the things this little Sony A7 can do. The LCD monitor is also adjustable to your liking and can be pulled out moved around while shooting. As you know with great tools, often come great price tags and this one goes for just around $900 dollars. A bit cheaper than your Panasonic while still get the job done and then some.

I really hope this article has helped you to make up your mind in choosing the first tool in your vlogging journey. Until next time, Thank you for stopping by!

REVIEW: The Nokia 8 is made for video blogging

    Nokia 8

Johannesburg - Mobile device manufacturer Nokia has burst onto the scene in an effort to regain its former glory.

After its licensing rights were handed over to HMD Global, it has seen a solid comeback.

Earlier this year it released the Nokia 3310, and now it has launched the Nokia 8.

The Nokia 8 may come to be known as the vlogger's best friend, as the device offers its users the ability to record video using the front and rear cameras simultaneously.

This can be streamed live and directly to Facebook, YouTube and other social media platforms.

The device features a 13 megapixel selfie camera on its front and a 13 megapixel camera on its rear, which makes the pic quality on both ends good.

    A look inside

The Nokia 8 has become the first Android device to collaborate with ZEISS optics to produce 4K content. The phone offers a great size display of 5.3 inches, and a resolution of 1440x2560 pixels.

The device features Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for protection, and runs Android 7.1.1 (Nougat) as its operating system, with planned upgrade to Android 8.0 (Oreo).

It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, which optimises the performance of its 3090mAh battery. It is encased in a solid shell, and has a premium look and feel.

For security when unlocking, it features a fingerprint scanner embedded in its home button.

    Worth it?

While the device may not seem like a flagship phone that will easily compete with the likes of the LG G6, the Samsung S8 and the Huawei P10, the Nokia 8 removes unnecessary bells and whistles to offer its users power for the essentials of a smartphone, making it a pure workhorse.

Its ability to create new content, meanwhile, may end up changing the dynamic of how video blogs are created.

When the recommended price of the Nokia 8 was announced by HMD Global southern Africa general manager Shaun Durandt at R9 499, many phone aficionados raised an eyebrow.

However, with its specifications and video blogging features, the Nokia 8 is comfortably one of the cheapest high-end devices in South Africa.

It is available exclusively from Vodacom on contract from R449 per month.

How Blogging Boosts the Profitability of Your Ecommerce Website (and 8 Ways to Get Started)

"Unfortunately, 'build it and they will come' rarely works." – Chris Garrett

With the release of the Outfitter Pro Premium WordPress theme, Rafal Tomal and I have been talking a lot about ecommerce websites.

Naturally, Rafal has great ideas about designing a t-shirt store, while I'm interested in how I can market an ecommerce store with, yes, geeky merchandise, but also robot kits and other nerdery for my site, Maker Hacks.

After I installed WooCommerce, I started thinking about blogging for ecommerce websites. Is it different from other types of content marketing? If so, how? And …

Should you blog and create content to sell ecommerce products?

    Let's dig in and discuss!

Unfortunately, 'build it and they will come' rarely works

That's not to say every store is an uphill struggle. With the correct product and market fit, conversions might happen easily.

Send me an email with the subject line "New Doctor Who T-shirts" and you know I will open that guy. Every. Single. Time.

(Note to self: email Sonia with "new pug puppy toys" and a PayPal purchase button …)

But if you're still growing your audience and need to get the word out about your ecommerce store, here are smart reasons to start blogging.

    Awareness

One of the primary reasons you should write blog posts is to raise awareness of what you sell.

Each article you write is like a friendly interaction with a salesperson about your store. Your blog offers opportunities for people to find your products and ultimately add them to their shopping carts.

It doesn't end there, though. Blog articles offer another way for you to get social shares to your website, amplifying your reach.

While someone might not share an individual product, the same person might be willing to share your article that mentions the product (more on why later in this post).

    SEO

With awareness comes more opportunities to get links from high-quality websites.

And when you craft articles that link to your products, you give search engines more unique content to serve up.

    Stickiness

Another aspect of "awareness" is staying top of mind with your prospects and customers.

Your site visitors have a lot of choices when it comes to websites they frequent. Providing a steady flow of new, useful articles gives you a chance to enter their inboxes without being overly promotional.

You shouldn't avoid pure sales or product announcements, but if you approach your topic from different angles and show up consistently, you will increase your chances of getting return visitors.

    Sales

Awareness helps drive sales, but you also need to generate interest, desire, and action, which is where writing blog posts can come in handy!

Your ecommerce system alone is limited for building up your product enough to make a sale, but a blog post can work more persuasion magic through the power of storytelling.

A case study, serving suggestion, usage demonstration, or even a "how to" can put the product in the spotlight and give it the proper context to convert a prospect.

    Lifetime value

We all know, as consumers ourselves, once we find a store we like, we are more willing to return to that store than go someplace similar.

With content marketing, you can use carefully written articles and sequences to enjoy a greater share of your customers' budgets, as well as attract new buyers.

Now that you're preparing to blog, what should you write about?

I've got you covered there too, with eight types of compelling content for ecommerce blogs.

    1. Case studies

One of the most powerful stories you can tell is how your product helps people or provides the benefits you promise (and perhaps unexpected benefits you didn't anticipate).

Think about the hero's journey …

What was their situation like before? What was their challenge or goal? How did they implement your product in their solution? What is their situation like now?

    2. Demonstrations

Seeing is believing, so seeing how something works and causes a change can take someone from skeptic to advocate.

That is why a "before and after" is so compelling, especially when the prospect can feel a connection to the person getting the results.

    3. Launches and product announcements

The most straightforward type of article tells your audience something new is available for sale.

Give all the specs: benefits and features, the price, who it is ideal for, why it is a good option, and tell them what to do next.

You might even offer a special deal with your favorite copywriting technique (urgency? scarcity?) to prime the pump.

    4. Upgrades and improvements

Launch day is not the only time you should update your customers with news.

Whenever you deliver an upgrade, improvement, or other positive development, shout it from the rooftops!

Existing customers, new customers, and potential referral partners will be interested in your announcements and the fact that you (or your suppliers) are continually improving what you sell.

    5. Customer profiles

Customer profiles help people identify with what you have to offer.

People like to see themselves in your testimonials and case studies, so writing about your diverse customers is a smart way to show new prospects that they are similar to your current customers.

Also, you build confidence and trust. Prospects see that people are buying and having success with your products!

    6. Tutorials

You will likely have documentation or help articles to answer questions or offer guidance about your products, but it's extra helpful to demonstrate how the products you offer can be used — in a casual, blogging format.

"How to" articles attract prospects who are looking for solutions. Show them how your product is a strong match for their needs.

    7. Serving suggestions

A serving suggestion is a mashup of a tutorial and customer profile. And it doesn't just apply to food!

Show photographs of your products in customers' hands. Have a gallery, or link to Pinterest and Instagram.

How are people customizing the items you sell in your store? What do people do with your products? What would make prospects excited about what they could do with them?

    8. Competitions and prize draws

Need an excuse to talk about your product?

Give one away to a lucky reader while telling your whole audience about the product's benefits!

    But there's more …

    Don't forget to consider:

  • Off-site content marketing. Guest post, encourage customers to write their own reviews, and put publicity materials in influencers' hands to help get inbound links.
  • Visuals and video. YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook are other channels that help you show benefits (rather than just talk about them).
  • Affiliates. Ask your affiliates what they need from you and how you can help them strengthen their promotions.
  • The proof is at the cash register

It's a content world, so don't allow your store or products to get lost in the noise.

Give your prospects useful resources that also educate them about what they need to know to do business with you.

Once you've made your WooCommerce store organized and beautiful (Outfitter Pro can help with that), let your audience know about all the aspects that make your offerings special. Get writing! 🙂

Texas Connects Us: Blogging Coffee With the Boykins

Sometimes, sisters share the same interests. For the Boykin girls of McKinney, it's coffee. (Published 5 hours ago)

Sometimes, sisters share the same interests. For the Boykin girls of McKinney, it's coffee!

"We started loving coffee when we were about three years old," said Allie Boykin, the eldest sister. "Our grandma would always give us coffee. Our parents didn't always know about it."

These days, it's less about the blend and more about the environment. They're always searching for something different.

"Not like a Starbucks," Allie added. "Just something unique."

"We went to Jacob's Well in Wimberly, Texas," Kaylee Boykin said.

They chronicle their adventures in a blog called Coffee Over Tejas.

"Just see Texas towns and everything we have to offer, " Allie explained.

It's a way for the sisters to connect with other coffee lovers.

Allie is a senior at Texas A&M University.

"I write all of the blogs," she said. "I love writing, so I really enjoy doing that."

Her middle sister, Madison Boykin, is in college, too.

"I take pictures for all of the blogs," Madison said.

Kaylee Boykin, the youngest, is still in high school.

"I do the video editing part of it," she said.

Most kids her age are worried about, "boys, Snapchat, school, sports," Kaylee joked.

Kaylee is focused on the next post, because these girls know the most memorable stops offer more than just a drink.

"My favorite one is the first one we did," Madison said. "It's in Livingston. It's called the Bull Shack, and the people made it for their son who has autism, so he always has a job."

"It was really sweet, to see how the community was united because of that coffee shop," Allie said.

They plan to tour other parts of our state, looking for more great stories.

"There's already places that I want to go, like Marfa, Texas," Allie said.

Of course, they'll enjoy a nice cup of coffee along the way.

What’s Trending: The Power of Strategic Blogging in Action | LinkedIn Marketing Blog

Blogging has long been viewed as a staple in the world of content marketing. That isn't likely to change soon. Publishing blog posts is relatively inexpensive, with a low barrier of entry, and is one of the simplest ways to drive traffic to your website.

But generating clear results through this tactic can prove tricky. As the Web continues to swell with more and more content, gaining visibility grows tougher. Not so long ago, it was uncommon for a business to host a regularly updated blog; now, most have one (if not more). And too often, the strategies around these content outposts are thin and flimsy.

What does a successful blog look like? Instead of rehashing the same old best practices, we'll point you to some examples of strategic blogging that drive revenue. Additionally, our roundup will cover mistakes you might be overlooking, quick tips to enhance your blog posts, noteworthy content marketing trends, and more.

It's time to unleash the power of the blog.

At Copyblogger, Stefanie Flaxman shares tips for executing in an effective way that doesn't disrupt the reader's experience.

    3. 5 Easy-to-Miss SEO Mistakes Blogs Make

Evolution Of Blogging; Climate Change And Nutrition

The massive hurricanes Harvey and Irma have people talking about how much, if at all, climate change adds to such storms' destructiveness.

In a blog post authored by Paul Driessen, the conservative Heartland Institute disputes that global warming is worsening the weather or that it's human-caused. And, Driessen writes, fossil fuels "bring rescue boats."
