Live-Blogging Trump’s Address To Congress [CLOSED]

10:25 HZC: Try to watch Gov. Beshear from the perspective of a Bernie-supporting college student — someone angry about Ellison losing. That crowd isn't buying this speech. The question is whether Democrats can calm the base enough to move to the center as Beshear is doing now, or whether the future of the party really is in the hands of the identity politicians.

10:24 JW: The tone of the Democratic reply to Trump's address seems substantially less left-wing than Hillary Clinton's campaign—evidence that Trump has moved the political center of gravity to the right in a major way.

10:22 WRM: The speech seemed to demonstrate that the political ideas and sensibility that President Trump brought to national politics is here to stay.

The Democratic response given by exactly the kind of person that many leading Democrats are trying to marginalize: centrist, fiscally responsible southern white men.

10:14 NMG: Now that it's over, safe to point out that not a word was said about any supposed amnesty plans. According to CNN he actually did say something earlier today at the White House, so maybe something will happen. But clearly it is not enough of a White House priority to make it even into a laundry-list speech that mentioned immigration in several places, as was speculated. Much of the media spent the afternoon chasing their tails on this. Entire news cycles have become just not worth listening to lately; it's a real problem.

10:10 WRM: The strongest Trump speech I've seen. The speech unifies Republicans,  puts Democrats on the defensive,  and didn't give an inch on his core issues.

10:06 HZC: Three times he has said 250 years since the Declaration. It has been 241…

10:05 NMG: "America is friends today with former enemies…" Not a coincidence that CNN then cuts to Sen. John McCain,  who's been instrumental in repairing our ties with Vietnam—which now stands at the center of our anti-China policy.

10:04 WRM: Jacksonian foreign policy here: if other countries don't attack us,  they can live however they want.

10:03 WRM: European leaders have given Trump one of his biggest wins by a) failing to pay up under Obama and b) giving in to Trump.

10:01 NMG: There's something deeply unseemly about showcasing grieving families on national television for transient telegenic moments,  and that it's become a traditional part of the SOTU makes it no better.

9:56 NMG: During the buildup to the 1924 restrictionist bill,  sensationalized stories of immigrant crime – both in the form of gang crime (the Italian mob),  terrorism (Eastern European anarchists),  and random street crime – proved remarkably effective,  if very dirty,  way of mobilizing support for the restrictionist cause. President Trump is playing with some tropes with very ugly antecedents here in American history here—but critics should not underestimate the potency of what he's doing,  either.

It's fine to be appalled by the idea that the President wants to feed stereotypes about all aliens being criminals; it would be a grave mistake to do so in ways that sound like you care more about speaking in politically correct ways than about the victims of violent crime.

9:56 WRM: Every right wing politician in Europe is watching this speech. And learning.

9:53 WRM: Trump understands that support for the police is one of the most powerful political themes in American culture.

9:52 NMG: Things that have not changed,  part II: the Democrats still have to stand and clap for the pro-cop lines.

9:51 NMG: The fact that Trump did not actually mention a Right to Try bill in a section that so clearly alluded to its core concept — that the terminally ill should be free to try drugs before they've cleared every bit of FDA tape to make them "safe"— indicates how divorced from setting concrete policy 'asks' this speech has been. Maybe that's smart; most Americans don't care about the technical details,  and those who do — largely in DC — will know what the President is talking about anyway. Or maybe it will make it difficult to link the speech to drives for real policy deliverables.

9:50 JW: Trumpism (so far) is looking like conservative boilerplate with a dash of working class-bait on immigration, trade and culture thrown in.

9:47 NMG: The rare disease portion of this event reminds me of Joe Biden's cancer moonshot—and of how like Biden Trump is,  in many ways. They share skills that have helped both of their careers,  and that many of their colleagues lack.

9:46 WRM: Paid family leave: the Liberal (i.e. conservative) government in Australia did very well with this.

9:45 NMG: One of the reasons for major addresses like the State of the Union is supposedly to make clear to the Executive departments what the President's priorities are. This speech has been a laundry list – and a very long one,  of many major requests. If you were an executive-branch functionary,  would you have any idea which of them the President wanted you to prioritize? (The fact that several hundred positions remain as of yet unfilled exacerbates this problem.)

9:44 JW: Trump's healthcare "principles"—focusing on health savings accounts and federalism—closely mirror Tom Price's plan—the consensus approach among Republicans.

9:44 WRM: Which state will become the Delaware of health insurance?

9:44 WRM: At talk of lower drug prices,  the Dems rise.

9:43 WRM: A Jacksonian approach to health care: help from the government to buy the plan that you want.

9:42 WRM: As the speech wears on,  Trump veers off-script more. This could get very interesting.

9:41 WRM: This is the most polarized reaction to a Joint Address I've ever seen.

9:40 NMG: We've written about the turn toward legal immigration restrictionism for the last eighteen months (see here), following a historic pattern of America in America of veering from wide-open periods in immigration to very restricted ones. We're not at the total restriction of 1924 yet, but we're definitely in a different phase than we were even a few years ago, when a bill that would not only grant amnesty but practically double legal immigration enjoyed bipartisan support.

9:39 HZC: There's a lot of truth to this "we make bad deals" rhetoric. Compared even to other developed countries, America gets terrible results for very high cost on health care, infrastructure, education, and many other key services. See Tyler Cowen on this from a few days ago.

9:37 WRM: A third ring of suburbs?

9:36 NMG: Prime Minister Trudeau of Canada has preened himself mightily over Trump's refugee EO, and liberal Americans have genuflected his way. Let's see what they make of this.

The American immigration system is one of the foremost instances of American exceptionalism. It's a shame President Trump's opponents spent the last eight years talking that phrase more or less out of the national vocabulary.

9:34 WRM: Ryan stands on a Trump trade line; the apocalypse is near.

9:33 NMG: Trump's approach to the Islamic world, in this speech at least, is very Jacksonian: no better friend, no worse enemy. (To steal a line from classical history that's enjoyed a newfound popularity in the U.S. military.) We stand with our allies, our enemies are to be wiped from the face of the earth. But it remains to be seen how well this will work, particularly given the contrast with his rhetoric on the executive order, where the dichotomy is Muslim nations versus others, rather than friends versus enemies. But American commentators may be underestimating something: the Sunni nations who are our most important allies are locked in what they see as existential struggles with Iran and with destabilizing jihadi forces. (In that order—which may or may not be Trump's.) The promise of loyal friendship to those who help us, and eternal enmity to mutual enemies, may outweigh some visa troubles in the minds of their governments.

9:32 WRM: One of Trump's strongest assets,  in the campaign and now: the foreign policy establishment has been responsible for a succession of,  as he says,  'tragic failures',  but has shown no real sign of a creative rethink.

9:31 HZC: It's a pretty effective speech so far. Clearly laying out what seem to most Americans like obvious goals of their government. Fight terror, secure the border, etc. The issues on which Trump was elected, but expounded on in the form of a more-eloquent-than-usual speech.

9:30 DM: As the language gets more truculent,  the President hits his stride. Trump's age is a savage one.

9:28 WRM: Andrew Jackson smiling from the Great Beyond as Trump denounces the 'network of lawless savages.'

9:26 JW: It was widely reported that Flynn's replacement as National Security Adviser,  H.R. McMaster, lobbied Trump to back off the term "radical Islamic terror." Apparently McMaster has not prevailed on him (at least not yet).

9:25 WRM: Major divide: the Democrats don't stand for the war on terror applause line.

9:22 WRM: This speech is also aimed at splitting white working class voters even farther from the Democrats. As Senator Joe Manchin's applause indicates, it's working.

9:19 WRM: This part of the speech is the worst nightmare for Democrats. How can you not applaud these things? They're very popular, but Democrats have to sit there silently.

9:17 WRM: Trump doubles down on every promise he made during the campaign. A lot of hostages being given to fortune tonight.

9:15 DM: Trump's got a new fitted suit—looking statesman-like—but he looks uncomfortable in it,  constrained. And he's not channeling this supposed optimism well. No "American Carnage",  this speech.

9:12 JW: Trump has so far refused to condemn high-profile hate crimes of the last few weeks; he has responded defensively to allegations that his campaign or rhetoric was related to such acts. But he just bit the bullet and said the words his critics wanted. They make it easy for him—he will get a lot of credit for jumping through a tiny hoop.

9:09 WRM: Standing ovation for President Trump at the start; not all DC traditions have died in the new era.

9:09 HZC:

8:58 JW: From PJ Media:

The editor of The New Yorker, David Remnick, says that the Russians weren't trying to aid Trump's campaign; he says they were trying to destabilize Hillary's inevitable presidency. His contention is that, like everyone in the media, the Russians thought that Secretary Clinton was going to be the 45th president, and the hacks and leaks they released were intended to damage her leadership. Remnick says that the Russians are actually now fearful of Trump's off-the-cuff attitudes and that "there's a lot of buyer's remorse." This totally flies in the face of the liberal narrative that the Russians essentially put President Trump in the Oval Office.

As Trump prepares to deliver his first address to Congress, we have noticed a substantial shift in opinion on Trump's Russia connections. Even center-left partisans seem to be backing off the idea that Russians were engaged in a conspiracy to try to elect Trump president of the United States. That doesn't mean there aren't still important questions about potential contacts between Trump and the Kremlin, but the more hysterical tinfoil-hat allegations seem to be declining in significance. See Walter Russell Mead's essay about how the media went off the rails with the "Putin's puppet" narrative.

8:55 NMG: It seems coincidental, even symbolic, that President Trump's first Joint Address comes on Carnival (or Mardi Gras.) The President's critics see Trump's election as an outpouring of the grotesqueries in American life, of aspects of behavior and the psyche that should normally be kept under control. They view his Administration itself as a Carnivalesque freakshow. But The Donald himself, the consummate showman, would be the first to acknowledge that the people like a show—and that it's been to his advantage (and a sign that he understand them) to give them one from time to time. Stephen Bannon would probably argue also that there are parts of the spirit that should be given their season, and that for too long have been repressed—that what has resulted from this Puritanical repression has been twisted and self-serving hypocrisy, rather than a pure spirit of public service, and that he is restoring the balance. Either way, we'd better hope the nation as a whol e does not wind up in sackcloth and ashes come our (figurative) tomorrow.

8:52 WRM: Many Republicans are rending their garments and wearing sackcloth and ashes over Trump's evident refusal to take on entitlement spending in his first budget. They should calm down. Despite the DC urban legend that presidents should take on the tough issues early in their tenure, it's actually much smarter for any president, and especially this one, to win peoples' trust before taking unpopular steps.

The presidency, despite President Obama's boasts about his phone and his signing pen, is not as powerful an office as many think, especially where domestic policy is concerned. Presidential powers on paper are limited; what makes presidents loom large is their ability to browbeat and intimidate opponents. That power waxes and wanes with presidenital popularity. A president whose favorability ratings are in the high sixties is like the 900 gorilla; he sleeps wherever he wants. Congressmen would vote to raise their mothers' taxes to get a photo op with the president then. But let those popularity numbers drop into the thirties, and the bully pulpit stops working.

It's possible that someday the American people will be willing to see Washington deal with entitlements, but for that to happen there would need to be much more confidence in the abilities and the good intentions of the political elite than Americans now have.

If Trump wanted to take on entitlement reform, he'd first need to pile up a lot of political capital, and a lot of trust in the bank. The way to do that is to honor a critical mass of your campaign promises, enact some high profile legislative changes that your constituents like, and hope that the economy does well and that your poll numbers rise. Once that happens, and people begin to trust you, you can take on some tougher tasks.

The Jacksonian core of Trump's support is much less interested in budget deficits than in the protection of government programs that help the middle class — especially after decades of worsening economic outlook for the white working class.

Trump didn't get where he is by telling voters things they didn't want to hear; it would be the biggest surprise of the evening if President Trump calls for any cuts in middle class entitlements. Those are exactly what he was elected to protect.

8:46 WRM: As President Trump prepares for his first appearance before the joint houses of Congress, there is no sign that the upheaval that his election signaled has come to an end. He hasn't filled the White House with frontier revelers in coonskin caps, but many in the Establishment would prefer drunken pioneers, fleas and all, to some of the White House appointments the new president has made.

The biggest question before the country today is whether the new President can assemble a governing coalition in Congress — and for what policies? The Democrats loathe him; so do many Republicans. Neither party establishment really wishes him to succeed. What holds many Republicans in line is the fear that angry Trump voters in their districts will primary them if they don't support President Trump, but if Trump should lose his hold on his base, that threat would dissipate. Recent outsider politicians at the state level — pro wrestler Jesse Ventura in Minnesota and Arnold Schwartzenneger in California — disappointed in office.

To hold his base, Trump must stoke the flames of populist revolt and indignation that got him this far; to succeed long term, he has to work out a deal with a part of the Washington establishment that his base despises. It's a tough job, and there is absolutely no guarantee that he will succeed; tonight we  will begin to see how he hopes to thread the needle.

8:43 WRM: This remains one of the most dramatic presidential transitions in history. One of the most dramatic came in 1801, when Thomas Jefferson and his Democrats replaced John Adams and the Federalists after a hard fought campaign that some feared would divide the country. It was the year after George Washington died; many wondered if the country he so laboriously had assembled would remain united in his absence. Jefferson rose to the occasion, called for national unity, and, though party divisions would remain, an important precedent had been set: the transfer of power in the United States from one party to another would proceed peacefully if not always graciously.

The next fraught transition saw the inauguration of Andrew Jackson, the controversial backwoods populist who most of the Washington elite viewed with the mix of horror and contempt they now reserve for Donald Trump. Jackson rubbed their noses in the drama of transition, throwing the White House open for an all-comers-welcome inauguration bash that saw grizzeled frontiersmen in coonskin caps swilling cider and wine where Dolly Madison had once entertained. Jackson's administration would be as tumultuous as his inauguration; he picked one fight after another with the establishment of the day, culminating in his second-term attack on the Bank of the United States. At one point Jackson's entire cabinet with one exception resigned in protest at what they saw as his disregard of basic moral standards. If Donald Trump's entire cabinet resigns in his first term, and he closes down the Federal Reserve in his second, we'll have some idea what it was like to live through the Jackson years.

The next big transition came in 1861, when almost half the country seceded after Lincoln's election. Warned that his life was in danger, Lincoln entered the capital in disguise; mobs in secessionist Baltimore tried to stop trains coming from the North. Lincoln would go on to lead the country through the bloodiest conflict in our history; things had still not settled down when his assassination brought Andrew Johnson into the White House.

Grover Cleveland's inauguration was the next shocker; his election victory was the first time the Democrats, the bulk of whose strength lay in the former Confederacy, had controlled the White House since the Civil War. The fears that Cleveland would embrace wild eyed populism or ex-Confederate disloyalty proved unfounded; he governed the country much like a moderate Republican would have done, and although he remains the only American president to serve non-continuous terms in office (1885-1889 and 1893-1897), the stability of his administration (in the face of tough economic times) demonstrated that the old era of sectional tension was fading away.

FDR's inauguration in 1933 was another nail-biter. Not only was the country in the depths of the worst economic depression in its history; a mass bank panic swept across the country in the final weeks of the Hoover presidency, and by the time Franklin Roosevelt took the oath of office, not a single bank was open for business anywhere in the United States. This was before the era of credit cards and ATMs to say nothing of federal deposit insurance. Nobody in the United States could cash a check or get cash; nobody knew if their money would still be there when and if the banks reopened. The unemployment rate was in the neighborhood of 25 percent; the stock market had lost about 90 percent of its value, and foreign economies were in as much trouble as the United States. FDR got the banks back in business and in his first 100 days ended the drift to paralysis and collapse. It would take World War Two to truly end the Depression, but FDR's first 100 days set the standard for all su bsequent presidents.

The transition of 2017 is not,  thankfully,  taking place in the shadow of a depression or an impending civil war. But it is a stressful one. While Donald Trump did not gain a majority or even a plurality of the popular vote, 2016 saw a sweeping repudiation of the bipartisan American establishment on an unprecedented scale. Add the Bernie vote to the Trump support,  and a clear majority of Americans were voting for radical change last year.

Why Blogging Is The Best Business In The World

Making money is all about identifying opportunity and doing everything possible to succeed until that window of opportunity closes. But most people are too afraid to take any major risks. Why should we when we have the luxury of employment to keep us comfortably numb.

The two most common people who take risks are: 1) those who start with little or nothing, and who therefore have little or nothing to lose, and 2) those who come from rich families and who also don't have anything to lose. When your name is William Henry Gates III, you're not exactly going to starve on the streets if you drop out of college.

For those of us in the middle class, we only make a change once we're agitated enough to take action. For me, I decided I had enough of banking after 13 years because the correlation between reward and performance broke down after the financial crisis.

After eight years of writing online and 13 years of researching every single industry for my job in finance, this post will identify reasons why blogging could very well be the best business in the world that anybody can start. The internet, after all, will be a lifelong trend.

Why Blogging Is The Best Business

1) Large structural decline in the establishment. The blogging business involves writing interesting enough content to attract the most amount of visitors possible in order to earn advertising revenue. Therefore, our competition was newspapers, which have gone through a tremendous hollowing out since 2000 when the internet really started to take off.

Newspaper Ad Revenue

But newspapers didn't see bloggers as competition. Individuals writing about what we ate for breakfast or chronicling our feelings online didn't matter. Instead, newspapers saw Google and Facebook as the real competition. Now Facebook is the most profitably media company around, partly thanks to the tremendous amount of fake news advertising on their platform.

Newspaper, Facebook, Google Ad Revenue

As newspapers were trying to defend themselves against getting beaten up by Google and Facebook's respective monopolies in search and social media, bloggers found an opportunity to take advantage of this disruption by siding with the emerging winners.

For example, roughly 70% of traffic to this site is through Google and Bing. The traffic is free (organic) and perpetual. I've got over 25,000 e-mail subscribers, also created for free. If each subscriber paid just $1/month, I could certainly afford to take care of a family of four in any expensive city in the world.

2) Competition who doesn't fully believe in themselves. If you majored in English and then went on to journalism school for your Master's degree, you probably have better technical writing skills and reporting skills than 95% of the bloggers out there.

But what I don't understand is why don't more qualified writers who have incredible resumes focus on building their own brand and growing their own platform? For example, instead of making The Huffington Post rich writing for peanuts (or for free), why not make yourself rich writing by writing on your own site? Arianna Huffington and her investors already got rich by selling to AOL for $315M!

It's great to see more traditional journalists branch out to become freelance writers. That's an entrepreneurial step in the right direction, whether out of necessity or courage. I'm always trying to challenge those blessed with writing skills to build their own platforms. But more often than not, I'm met with skepticism and resistance.

Check out this Twitter exchange I had responding to a salty freelance tech journalist who wrote, "I begin to think that people who think they can make money from publishing original content on the internet are deluded." He was responding to publishing platform, Medium, and its layoffs.

Charles is basically bagging on people like me, who've been doing just fine for the past eight years. What's incredible is that despite helping make The Guardian, a popular British newspaper, rich as their tech editor from 2009 – 2014, Charles still doesn't believe independent publishing can be done!

Why the media is screwed

As you can see from the exchange, even after all his years of experience, Charles still doesn't believe it's possible to make money as an independent publisher despite sending him this article full of examples of people who do. Anybody can do a quick Google search to see examples of how much people are making from blogging. Yet, Charles refuses to believe. When you adopt a welfare mentality, you'll never be able to make an extraordinary amount of money.

Many veteran journalists all think the publishing industry is broken. Only a few people have the courage to use their skills to make it on their own. One such person is Brian Lam, the founder of The Wirecutter, a tech/gadget review site.

Brian Lam was a contributing editor for Wired Magazine, and then became the lead editor at Gizmodo, a popular tech/gadget review site for a number of years. He then left and started The Wirecutter in 2011. On October 24, 2016, Brian sold his bootstrapped company to The New York Times for ~$30M. Not every journalist will see the same results as Brian. But every journalist should at least try to leverage their knowledge and skills to make themselves rich instead.

3) Attractively low startup and operating costs. The New York Times operating costs must be in the tens of millions a year. Jeff Bezos paid $250 million cash to buy The Washington Post in 2013. Good luck to any one of us for coming up with that type of cash to keep the lights on.

When I decided to start blogging in 2009, I hired a guy for $350 off Craigslist to throw up a generic site using the now defunct Blogger platform owned by Google. The site was called "RichBy30RetireBy40". It could have been huge! After playing around with the inferior Blogger platform for several months, I decided to start over on WordPress, a much superior website platform that currently runs Financial Samurai today. I hired another guy off Craigslist for $1,000 to set up my WordPress site and paid another $200 for some custom design work. Further, I had to pay like $25/month for basic shared hosting.

Now, creators have it so good thanks to technology and competition. You can easily set up your own site in 30 minutes by following my step-by-step guide. Instead of spending $2,000 like I did, your cost can be as little as $2.95/month for hosting and $15 a year for a domain name. I'm envious and happy for those people who are looking to build their own brand online today.

Nobody is going broke spending $50 a year operating a website. The people who do go broke are those with massive fixed overhead costs who are unable to pivot quickly enough. Why do you think there is so much retail and restaurant turnover? After sinking in hundreds of thousands of dollars in remodeling costs plus payroll costs, the pressure is on to turn a profit immediately or else you're toast.

Having a web business is the most cost efficient, low-risk way to be an entrepreneur. If you don't succeed, all you lose is your time, not your entire life savings!

4) Unlimited scale. "Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world," wrote Archimedes. Leverage is one of the biggest keys to wealth. There are over three billion people online and growing. Your website can instantly start competing with Yahoo or The New York Times for eyeballs, all at a cost of $50 a year.

Thanks to search engines like Google, Bing!, and Duck Duck Go, you can publish something and instantly get found for free. In the past, you'd have to spend a boatload on advertising to get attention. Now you don't, especially since social media is also free.

Financial Samurai receives about 1,000,000 page views a month with ZERO advertising. Even though 1,000,000 pageviews a month sounds like a lot, especially for a site with no forum, there's still BILLIONS more pageviews of upside! I really should start doing some online advertising, but I just can't be bothered.

Check out this regional internet traffic growth chart by data network provider, Cisco. If you want to take advantage of the next phase of internet consumption growth, it may be best to have an Asian-themed website with English written content and multiple Asian language translations. Hmm, know of any sites with this type of combination?

An Asian-themed website with English written content sounds like a good idea

5) Massive profit margins. When you run a lifestyle business, you want to be as profitable as possible. You can't afford to keep on operating at a loss for years because you probably don't have any or many investors with unlimited sums of money. Besides, given the low startup and operating costs involved in being a blogger, the operating profit margins are huge compared to any other industry.

Take a look at this great example of the average fast-food restaurant profit margin. A $27,101 operating profit before paying taxes on $821,256 in annual revenue is absurdly small! Are you willing to earn just a 3.3% operating profit margin for all your hard work? I sure as hell ain't.

I'd rather just spend six months writing a severance negotiation strategy book and earn ~$36,000 from it passively for the rest of my life. Even if my only source of income was my severance book, my profit margin on the book alone would still be well over 80%.

Now let's take a look at operating profit charts I created for a relatively young blogger and a veteran blogger.

Beginning blogger operating profit margin chart

With $12,000 in annual revenue, this 26 year old blogger has an operating margin of 70%. Not bad! Nancy loves to travel and decided to start a blog to chronicle her adventures and lower her costs. She's built up a brand for herself and now earns a healthy $1,000 a month from her site. It's not enough to live on, but it's a great supplement to her $36,000 a year day job working at a retail clothing store.

Let's take a look at Nancy's potential future if she keeps grinding away.

Blogging is one of the most profitable business in the world

After six years of working on her side hustle, Nancy decided to leave her $55,000 a year job as a retail store manager and work on her travel site full-time because she's now earning $100,000 in revenue. She can now afford to boost her travel budget up from $1,500 to $5,000 and increase her travel meal budget from $500 to $2,000.

Despite her large travel and meal increase, her operating profit margin soars to 90% because all her other costs are relatively fixed. This is what we call "operating leverage." Yes, she had to increase her hosting cost from $120 a year to $360 a year due to the increase in traffic, but an extra $240 is nothing compared to her revenue, which has increased by $88,000!

Here's a nice chart that gives you an idea of industry net profit margins (after tax). I wish I could find a similar chart that shows operating profit margins (after expenses, before tax) to have a more apples to apples comparison. But even if you increase all the net profit margin numbers by 50% (Health Tech from 22% to 33%), no industry can compete with the blogging business at 70%+ operating profit margins.

6) No more annoying bosses. One of the biggest reasons why I no longer wanted to work in Corporate America is because I couldn't stand the constant micromanaging by new bosses. I literally had six new bosses during the time I was at my old company. It was frustrating to deal with new management styles and often very insecure people who had to prove to their bosses they were worthy.

I really couldn't stand having to go to a meeting to talk about what we should talk about in an upcoming meeting. Playing politics to get ahead is a soul-sucking endeavor that will burn out even the best ass kisser. In the end, all anybody ever wants is to get rewarded commensurately with his or her performance. With a blog, you either write and flourish, or you come up with some excuse not to write and die. There's nobody else to blame or congratulate but yourself.

7) Much better hours with no commute. It's completely inefficient to have to commute to and from work every day. Not only do you waste time commuting, you increase your stress level, increase your chance of getting hurt, spend more money on gas, maintenance, tickets, and fares, and potentially hurt someone else as well! For those of you who leave home between the hours of 7am – 9:00am, I commend you for your bravery and patience. The same goes for those of you who leave work between the hours of 4:30pm – 7:00pm.

With blogging, all you've got to do is open your laptop at home and get to work. You can also work from anywhere in the world there's internet access as well. No wonder why so many bloggers decide to incorporate travel as part of their blogging business.

There's no face time necessary either. Think about all the times when you stayed back at work, surfing Financial Samurai because your boss was still there. All you wanted to do was get out of there so you could beat traffic, spend time with your partner, play with your kids, or get a cold brew. But no. Your workaholic boss kept you from living your life.

8) Exercise more of your skills. Companies like Google are still able to hire the best and brightest kids because they have the most money to pay. Unfortunately, they hoard talent with their mega billions and underutilize a vast majority of their employees' skill-sets.

Can you imagine going to a prestigious private university for $250,000, only to spend 60 hours a week trying to motivate your Uber drivers to continue working for peanuts by creating happy emoji faces in the app? How mind-numbing is that? If purpose didn't matter, nobody would quit the Goldmans, Googles, and McKinsey's of the world because they all pay so well.

One of the main reasons why I decided to go to business school was so I could explore entrepreneurship. Because I didn't grow up rich (and wasn't too good in higher level math), I studied Economics and Mandarin in college to best help me get a job at the time. But after four years of work, I could afford to study new fields, especially since my employer paid for my MBA.

It feels truly wonderful to be able to utilize more of your skills in everyday business. For example, with Financial Samurai, I have fun writing about finance, negotiating business deals, marketing my site organically online, and practicing various forms of communication. The more you get to exercise your brain, the more fulfilled you will be.

9) You don't have to sell a thing. If you hate selling, like so many of us do, then blogging is simply the best because you can create a revenue stream where your readers/customers never have to spend a penny. Revenue comes from click ads, banner ads, affiliate products, and your own products.

I would venture to guess that 99.9% of you have never given me any money, and that's just fine by me! I like pounding away at the keyboard because it's fun. I enjoy highlighting financials products that are free to use or may save or generate money for everyone. It's much more rewarding to make money off corporations whose products can help individuals, rather than make money off individuals themselves.

I love the fact that anybody, rich or poor, young or old, can come to Financial Samurai to find an answer to one of their vexing financial problems for free. They can leave a comment to ask a question or interact with other readers to learn more as well. The best reward is hearing from readers over the years about how an article on Financial Samurai has helped improve their lives for the better. One might even say blogging is like a "passive giving machine" once the search engines index your articles.

Here's the other thing, parents are paying exorbitant amounts of money for grade school and university because they believe education is the most valuable gift a parent can give their child. Therefore, how awesome is it to give away real world education to the very parents who pay those enormous sums of money for tuition? Right on!

Here's a nice comment I recently got from a reader on my historical 401k contribution limits post. The post doesn't just highlight what the limits are, the post tries to illuminate the value of your employer's potential match and to question the employer's commitment to their employees.

Why blogging is the best business in the world

10) Anybody can create. With blogging, you don't need a lot of capital to start or operate as I've pointed out. Further, you don't need to have a pedigree from UC Berkeley either. All you need is the ability to regularly come up with helpful topics to write about. If you can speak forever, you can write forever because ideas just come naturally. There's no need to write amazing prose because you aren't writing a New York Times bestseller nor are you writing for the New York Times!

Dr. Phil's weight loss book

If Dr. Phil can make money teaching people how to lose weight, anything is possible!

There are people who started with no clue about the topics they are now experts writing about who've made huge sums of money. For example, Dr. Phil, who is obese, wrote two best-selling weight-loss books, and he's still obese. Dr. Phil didn't give a crap about what other people thought about him and his expertise. He created something from nothing, influenced millions of people, and got rich anyway.

Now imagine what you can do with a little bit of expertise in your field. You could make a killing! This is why it continues to perplex me why journalists with all the skills and pedigree in the world can't go on to make it big on their own.

11) The ability to create positive change. The world is a wonderfully messed up place. Despite tremendous progress on the social and economic front, there's still plenty of issues to address. I'd like to think that we all want equality for our children, even if we do prefer a competitive advantage.

A blogger has the ability to support great organizations, point out flaws in suspect organizations, and share stories about important issues so that nobody ever has to feel alone. The greatest reward a blogger can receive is knowing s/he has made a positive change in someone's life. This is one of the main reasons why I accepted the job as an assistant varsity boy tennis coach at a nearby high school.

After a while, making more money starts feeling very empty. Knowing that you're helping someone for free is an awesome feeling.

Financial Samurai reader thank you e-mail

Reader thank you e-mail 2017. This type of feedback is way better than money.

Blogging Is The Best

Getting rejected by so many tech companies since I left finance in 2012 was a bummer. But each rejection gave me a "power up" to try harder and make it on my own. Never would I have imagined during college or even just 10 years ago that having a simple website would allow me to be 100% free.

All any rational person ever wants is to see a correlation with effort and reward. Being an entrepreneur gives you the most pure correlation possible. And if you choose blogging as your business, you just might stumble upon the most rewarding, most profitable, and most fun entrepreneurial activity around.

Mumbai: Local trains on Harbour line hit due to derailment, commuters face torrid time

Mumbai, Feb 27: Rail services on Mumbai's Harbour line were affected early on Monday morning as three wagons and brake van of a goods train derailed between Ravli and Kurla on Down Harbour Line. The restoration work is currently underway while the railway administration has allowed the suburban commuters to use the mainline and trans-harbour services. Suburban trains services are running between Kurla and Panvel without any disruption. As per recent tweets, Railways have requested BEST to run additional buses from Kurla towards CST to help stranded commuters. BEST is running additional buses from Kurla/Vadala towards CST and Vashi-CST.

Thousands of Harbour line commuters in Mumbai had a torrid time on Monday after the delay in train schedule due to derailment. The Harbour line trains were running between Kurla-Panvel and not beyond Kurla. CST bound trains from Panvel are only running till Kurla due to the derailment while trains between CST and Andheri were on time. Trans-harbour services between Thane-Panvel, Thane-Vashi railway services were functioning late that the scheduled time.  The railways have allowed the suburban commuters to use the mainline and trans-harbour services till normal services on harbour line are restored.

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, the Central Railways in a series of tweets mentioned, "Mainline & Transharbour trains are running. Harbour line passengers are permitted to travel via Transharbour & Main line". It informed in tweets that 6 additional emu rakes have been pressed in service on CST-Andheri /Kurla, Panvel-Vashi/Thane & Kurla-Panvel sections.

As per reports, this is a second major disruption on Harbour line in a weeks time. Last week, a Vashi – Vadala Up local was detained on near Raoli junction during peak hours. The train jumped a signal, a situation called Signal Passed At Danger (SPAD) leading to disruption of train services.

Blogger Meet and Greet: Happy President’s Day

Blogger Meet and Greet cakeWelcome to Ou r Presidents' Day Blog Party

The United States has a long-standing tradition of celebrating its presidents such as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The third Monday in February, which occurred this week, is a federal holiday for this reason.

Many people stay home from work and government agencies are closed. So, let's celebrate!

I promised my new reader, Nathan, at today's Meet and Greet, we would have cake, so that is what I am serving.

In the comments section, you are encouraged to self-promote.

Introduce your blog to the other guests at the party. Tell the readers about your blog, and post a link to your favorite post, a recent post, your About page, your blog link, or anything you like.

If you are not already following Mostly Blogging, I like new subscribers too.

Note: At other Meet and Greets, guests return and leave different links to articles in different comment boxes. You are welcome to return as often as you like and leave links.

I am hoping others will be able to find new blogs to read and new bloggers to connect with.

Guests, if you think others would enjoy the networking opportunities at our Meet and Greet, please share on your social media. The more guests at the party, the more networking opportunities for all of us.

If you get a chance to promote the link to this party on your site, that would also be much appreciated since it would help make others aware of this blog party.

2017 Gibson Relays Live Blogging Coverage

The relay carnival is opened to several different levels of athletes, including professionals, high schools, colleges and the primary age groups.

Some of the top high schools scheduled to take part at the meeting are Calabar, Jamaica College, Kingston College, St. Jago on the boys' side, while the likes of Edwin Allen, St Jago, Holmwood and Hydel are among the leading girls' teams.

However, St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS), who won the high school boys 4x400m and 4x800m titles last year, has opted to skip this year's meet.

It is understood the athletes have not recovered fully from competing at the Western Championships last week and coach Reynaldo Walcott decided to give them some rest.

According to Walcott, his team has a very busy schedule leading up to the 2017 Boys and Girls' Champs next month and needed to "prioritise."

"The Gibson McCook Relays is a prestigious meet on the athletics calendar, but after competing at the Western Championships last Saturday our athletes are fatigued and worn out and definitely need some time to recuperate," Walcott said in the Jamaica Gleaner.

"Both meets are too close. We definitely have to make a decision like this."

The 2017 Gibson Relays will begin at 9:00 a.m. ET with the heats of the 4x400m relays for high school boys open. This will be followed by the Institution men and the high school girls open in that section.

Action in the heats of the 4x100m relays will begin at 10:15 a.m.

The opening final on the track will be the One Mile Open for men and this gets going at 4:00 p.m.

The title races in the sprint relays get going at 4:20 p.m. ET.

Among the individual titles up for the taking at the 2017 Gibson Relays are the men's and women's 100m and 400m open events, as well as the men's and women's open long jump and high jump.

Some of the top athletes who have graced the track at the Gibson Relays in previous years are, world record holder Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, Yohan Blake, Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce, Omar McLeod and Elaine Thompson.
