David Edelstein Looks Back on the Uneven But Memorable 2016 Oscars

Getty Images

Twelve hours later, after live-blogging the ceremony and being alternately awed and flabbergasted, I find it easier to put the 2016 Oscars in more perspective. No one will forget this year's show. Chris Rock and his producers and writers came in with one overriding goal: not just to mention the #OscarsSoWhite brouhaha, but to shame and shame again the members of the Academy.

We can argue about whether he always did it well: Rock often spins out his conceits longer than he needs to, trying to build a rhythm his material can't always sustain. But he delivered formidable blows. Beyond his inspired peroration on "sorority racism," Rock brought out African-American Girl Scouts to extract money from white millionaires and visited a Compton theater to prove that black moviegoers had never heard of the films that actually were nominated for Oscars. (He did the same shtick the last time he hosted the ceremony.) He closed with Fight the Power. You came away feeling the chasm was greater than some of us (i.e., privileged white males like me) thought.

As for the awards themselves, one result might have actually been affected by #OscarsSoWhite. Perhaps — perhaps — Academy voters suddenly found themselves uncomfortable at the prospect of giving the lone award associated with Creed to the white actor. Of course, it's also possible that Academy members heard too many bad things about Sylvester Stallone. When Eddie Murphy was a favorite for Dreamgirls, word got around — from enemy publicists, presumably — that he generally didn't stay back to feed lines to co-stars when they had to do their close-ups. Burt Reynolds's personality didn't endear him to voters either, with the result that he spent several days in bed after losing the Oscar for his performance in Boogie Nights.

The other upset was, of course, Best Picture for Spotlight, although many prognosticators did say it was a three-way race even as The Revenant gained significant momentum in February. What we must draw from the result is that the Academy felt Tom McCarthy's direction was nothing special compared to that Best Director–winning showboater Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and so they split the vote. That strikes me as a very narrow idea of directing — the ensemble work in Spotlight is carefully calibrated — but I guess it's good to spread the love around. Of the most prominent awards, there were two for Spotlight, three* for The Revenant, one each for Room, The Danish Girl, Bridge of Spies, and The Big Short. Mad Max: Fury Road cleaned up on the technical side.

Finally, it's worth another raspberry for the producers' use of Ride of the Valkyries to "play off" winners who went on past the 30-second mark. I've always argued that the thank-you speeches are much more interesting than the scripted shtick and that straitjacketing people at perhaps the apex of their careers is both cruel and stupid. But it was particularly outrageous last night — especially when Wagner was invoked to drown out the Hungarian Jew who'd won an Oscar for his Holocaust movie, Son of Saul. Needless to say, the conductor did not raise his baton to interrupt Leonardo DiCaprio's laudable attack on global-warming deniers, and not because the producers are members of Greenpeace or 350.org. When the big guys show up, the bullies bow their heads and slink away.

*Correction: This article previously listed an incorrect number of Oscar wins for The Revenant. We regret the error.

NERDS' Star, Fashion Maven Patti Murin is Live-Blogging the Oscars Red-Carpet

NERDS' Star, Fashion Maven Patti Murin is Live-Blogging the Oscars Red-Carpet

It's been a busy week for Patti Murin. On Monday, it was announced that the erstwhile Lysistrata Jones would be joining the cast of the upcoming Broadway show, NERDS THE MUSICAL. That same day, she began rehearsals with co-stars Rory O'Malley, Bryan Fenkart, and Lindsay Mendez, and now, she is capping off her week by live-blogging the Academy Awards' Red Carpet.

Anyone familiar with Patti's legendary BACHELOR/BACHELORETTE recaps or her epic #OneChicago live-tweets (@PattiMurin) knows that she will have plenty to say about the stars, what they are wearing, and the typically cringe-inducing questions they are forced to endure. And look at the pictures above, Patti knows fashion! You can also continue celebrating with Patti all year long in her #PartywithPatti initiative!

ABC's live Red Carpet coverage kicks off at 7:00pm ET, and Patti will be commenting on it all until the ceremony begins at 8:30pm. Who knows, if she's feeling feisty, she might even start sometime during the E! Network coverage, which kicks off at 5:30pm.

If reading this blog and following her tweets aren't enough, NERDS THE MUSICAL begins performances at the Longacre Theatre on April 1st, no foolin'. Tickets are available now!

8:25 PM Okay friends, thank you so much for joining me! I will be live tweeting the Oscar ceremony, so follow me at @PattiMurin! Huge thanks to Matt Tamanini and Broadway World for having me!

8:22 PM Michael Strahan found his way backstage and is interviewing Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. Russ just called Ry "bugalug."

8:03 PM Michael Fassbender, looking AMAZING. Fun fact: I watched his movie "Steve Jobs" just days after I found out that "Nerds" was coming to Broadway, so it was extra exciting for me!

7:01 PM FYI, I LOVED Eddie Redmayne in "Les Miserables."

6:56 PM I LOVE Saoirse Ronan and plan to possibly accidentally meet her when we are on Broadway right across the street from each other, that's not creepy at all, ha ha she looks so pretty!!!

6:52 PM Looks like clavicle and all-boob-except-nipple are still in vogue this year. #OliviaWilde

6:46 PM Maybe let's not discuss how we don't eat before award shows, okay lady actresses? Thanks.

6:36 PM WHOOPI!!! Guys, I did a Broadway show with her. Not a humblebrag, just a brag. #Xanadu

NERDS' Star, Fashion Maven Patti Murin is Live-Blogging the Oscars Red-Carpet

6:34 PM If you're not following Jacob Tremblay on Instagram, your life is not complete. THIS KID IS A PEANUT!!!

6:28 PM Alicia Vikander again, and I'm really loving how simple her jewelry is! Just some gorgeous earrings, no bracelets, no necklace. One ring. In unrelated news, I now have a girl crush on Alicia Vikander.

6:27 PM Sam Smith, looking like...a guy in a tux. Good work, sir.

6:21 PM Alicia Vikander in custom Louis Vuitton! Gorgeous yellow gown. I would totally hit that, I mean wear that.

NERDS' Star, Fashion Maven Patti Murin is Live-Blogging the Oscars Red-Carpet

6:18 PM Mindy Kaling looking simply elegant in an understated gown....that is black...with blue sleeves...and her hair is pretty. #professional

6:09 PM Pretty sure Leo will win tonight based on his body of work. Which includes "Growing Pains" and the first "Parenthood" TV series.

NERDS' Star, Fashion Maven Patti Murin is Live-Blogging the Oscars Red-Carpet

6:03 PM Imagine standing in a line to talk to Ryan Seacrest? (shudders)

6:00 PM Andy Serkis was in "13 Going On 30"?????????

5:55 PM I'm just gonna leave this here. All hail BDJ.

NERDS' Star, Fashion Maven Patti Murin is Live-Blogging the Oscars Red-Carpet

5:49 PM I also want to make sure you're all aware that I'm on my couch in fuzzy knit pajama pants and an 8 year old cardigan. So, let's keep that in mind as I "critique" these Red Carpet looks.

5:42 PM And Giuliana Rancic is drinking her body weight in champagne. Like, literally I think. Also, Ryan Seacrest needs a girlfriend, stat.

5:41 PM It's Wolfgang Puck! REALLY digging his chef-inspired ensemble.

5:34 PM Welcome friends! I'm currently tuning in to the E! Red Carpet coverage, which always promises to be...interesting. Right now they're awkwardly waiting for someone to arrive (anyone, anyone really, someone PLEASE arrive), so enjoy Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana Rancic as they make small talk and waste time! Also, I just learned how to spell her name.

Satyameva Jayate! Modiji Do Hear These Words of Rohith Vemula's Mother: Rahul Gandhi

NEW DELHI: In a sharp riposte at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his 'Satyamev Jayate' tweet after Smriti Irani's fiery speech in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi on Saturday asked him to hear the version of mother of Rohith Vemula, the dalit scholar who committed suicide.

"Satyameva Jayate! Modiji do hear these words of Rohith Vemula's mother", Gandhi said on micro-blogging site Twitter.

The brief tweet was in reponse to Prime Minister's tweet 'Satyamev Jayate' soon after the HRD Minister's speech on the JNU row and the Rohith Vemula issue on Wednesday.

"My son died of torture. How many more deaths will it take for the government to deliver justice?", an angry Radhika, mother of Rohith, had said in a counter-attack on Irani.

Rahul's tweet came on a day when the Congress announced that it would bring a privilege motion against Irani in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on the Rohith Vemula issue.

10 lessons learned from a year of blogging

You've heard it once and you'll hear it again: blogging is a marathon, not a sprint. And for marketing teams in quickly growing companies, blogging can seem frustratingly slow.

But the age-old adage stays true: blogging takes time and patience. For the impatient among us, that's the last thing we want to hear. We want quick results, instant insights, and the type of stellar results other bloggers brag about.

Trust me – we tried to hack the system. Our meetings about the blog went a little like this:

A slideshare! That's the answer. No, no, an infographic, that will do it!  Hacky listicles are the way to go!  Let's just guest post for big blogs and watch the traffic pour in!

And, my personal favorite: Let's just make a viral post!

Well, we did all of these things, and I'm here to tell you that the truth is, there really are no magic tricks. There are tons of posts online with insane stories of blog growth…

blogging lessons

But these are outliers. This is not the norm.

The majority of blogs are doomed to slow – but steady! – growth.

Take a look at our Google Analytics traffic growth over the past year. From January to June, not a lot of action. But then, almost right on the six-month mark, our traffic spiked. And from there it continued to grow.

blogging lessons

The growth has been slow, but in the past year, we've seen:

  • 44.62 percent increase in organic traffic
  • 95.6 percent increase in users
  • 7.19 percent increase in pages per session
  • blog growth

After a year of blogging, here are the top 10 lessons I've learned:

    1) It takes a year to know what your blog is about.

We initially built the blog strategy based on what we thought our customers wanted: tips for how to increase eCommerce traffic, engagement, and conversions.

We created eBooks and pillars and groups of posts around this plan, but we quickly realized that this plan was not only way too broad, but a difficult strategy to execute.

Over the past year, we've figured out which posts resonate best with our readers, based on successes as well as mistakes. Through this journey, we learned what worked and what didn't, which guided us towards a more focused strategy.

Ending the year in 2015, for the first time this year, I can say that I clearly understand what our blog is about.

So what is the Yotpo blog all about?

Marketing, eCommerce, and reviews, and it's packed with data-driven guides, important industry trends, expert tips, and success stories from online store owners.

    2) Planning is underrated.

Make a plan. Make a million plans. You'll want to use these as reference when planning your content strategy as well as to look back on to see how your strategy has changed over time.

You need to be able to defend every post you write, and so you therefore need to see how it fits into the overall picture.

When designing our content strategy plan, I used Hubspot's strategy for organizing content as a guide. Take a look at how Hubspot explains the type of posts they publish:

    hubspot content strategy

For our blog, we have divided the posts into medium, topic, and purpose.

  • Medium means the format of the post – is it a data insight, trends & tips article, updates from Yotpo, or a success story?
  • Topic breaks these posts down according to the core issue they tackle. Our main topics are marketing, eCommerce, and reviews. But within these topics, there are plenty of other topics, like traffic, engagement, and UGC strategy.
  • The purpose follows the Hubspot model. What's our intention with the post? Is it a TOFU post designed to drive traffic? A promo post for a Slideshare or infographic? Or is it a deep tactical post derived from Yotpo data.
  • For planning, I use Coschedule to map out our content calendar, good 'ol sticky notes (on the computer) for weekly to-do's and reminders, and Google docs to brainstorm topics and create quarterly plans.

When you create plans, I suggest dividing them according to content strategy and KPIs. In other words, your strategy for what posts to write should be different than your strategy for optimizing for conversion or growing referral traffic.

What we have found works best is to let quarterly goals (grow traffic, increase conversions, etc.) help guide our content strategy, but not dictate it. So for example, in Q4, we had mostly top-of-funnel posts designed to grow traffic rather than focusing on data-heavy posts closely related to our product that we hoped would lead to conversions.

    3) You can't do it all. So don't try.

As blog manager, I want to create the best blog possible. But between optimizing CTAs, A/B testing, design, post layout, and managing requests for guest blog posts and looking over freelancers, writing often got pushed to the bottom of the list.

The quality of our posts suffered, and it was clear I wasn't paying enough attention to content strategy and creation. In Q4, my manager and I made a resolution that all I was going to worry about was writing great posts to increase traffic.

As hard as it was for me to turn my mind off from worrying about conversion, it allowed me to take time to get our content back on track.

That's not to say you shouldn't be a multi-tasker or that I'm not also focused on conversion. You should definitely be responsible for the blog from start to finish. But you need to understand that time is limited and prioritize what matters rather than trying to do it all.

Figure out how to best use your coworkers' skills to help you reach your goals. It may take me two hours to figure out how to improve conversions on a certain landing page, but a 15-minute meeting with our UX designer works even better.

You're not an island. Do what you can – and ask for help when you can't.

    4) It's not easy to find good freelancers.

We tried, oh we tried. We searched on sites like eLance, but we struggled to find a fabulous writer who also had a deep understanding of content marketing and our industry.

In the end, we did find quite a few good freelancers. Our best success was finding people through our personal and professional networks, and by taking advantage of a promo on inbound.org to post an internship position for free.

Inbound.org ended up being our best for leads on qualified candidates, mainly because people on inbound.org are already in the industry and have a basic understanding of what content marketing blogging is.

Another big tip is to not blow your budget by asking every candidate to write a sample. A great way to level the playing field is to ask freelancers for title samples first. You'll be able to really easily weed out those who "get" what your blog is about and those who may be great writers, but don't think like marketers.

We looked everywhere, but the truth is, there's nothing as valuable as having an in-house writer who knows the industry, the company goals, and the blog strategy.

In the end though, it's very difficult to find a freelancer who can produce the same quality content as an in-house writer – and sometimes financially, it's smarter to just hire someone in house.

    5) Have your eye everywhere.

Great writers read. In the fast-paced world of content marketing, it can be difficult for marketers to stop and take some time to read for pleasure each day.

I give myself about an hour each day to just read posts that interest me online. They don't necessarily need to be related to marketing, or eCommerce, or really anything. But they're huge sources of inspiration.

My two favorite newsletters are Next Draft and MediaRedef, which curate the best posts from around the web. Even on my busiest days, I take some time to scan through these newsletters and check out a few longform articles. I may not have time to finish the whole read, but I save them for later, and just that little bit of reading for pleasure gets the creative juices in my head flowing.

    6) Don't obsess over the analytics.

The first six months of managing the blog at Yotpo, I constantly refreshed Google Analytics, waiting to see the same type of insane results I read about in so many other posts. Checking month to month, or week to week, is pretty fruitless. You'll drive yourself insane checking. What's most important is to see trends.

I look back at the data when creating quarterly goals (as you can see below), but content strategy is equal parts data and instinct.blog marketing lessons

If I based all my strategy off these numbers, I doubt it would be very effective. A few months isn't enough to really see trends in a blog.

You should, of course, be checking stats regularly, but don't necessarily go all up in arms and change your entire plan because of one post that did really well. The best strategy decisions are made after taking more time to absorb long-term changes.

    7) Use your users and subscribers!

One of our most successful initiatives has been including blog posts in our product newsletters.

As you can see, our biggest spikes in traffic happened when product newsletters were sent out.

Here's a look at total traffic:

    blogging marketing lessons

And here's a look at traffic from our product newsletters:

Screen Shot 2015-12-20 at 4.00.09 PM

Focus on building up your email subscriber list and marketing to users.

    8) Quality is so, so much more important than quantity.

    And quality takes time.

We experimented with different amount of blog posts per week, varying between two to five. The more we posted, the worse the posts got. I just didn't have the same amount of time to put into each post.

There is just so much content on the web that people don't want to read the same old stuff anymore. Content marketers who want to stand out need to have really unique ideas and original ways to add value.

    9) SEO is a b*tch.

I know it's important to write posts that will be found, but SEO is one tough nut to crack. It's always important to optimize posts, and this is one habit I definitely encourage, but actually figuring out which keywords to optimize for is another story.

Even with the help of an SEO consultant, it's been difficult finding relevant and achievable SEO keywords to target. Plus, even when we do identify the right keywords, they don't always fit nicely into a post.

I've learned that keywords are best for informing the content creation process, not defining it. We use keywords as a general guideline, but often the posts that do best for us weren't created with SEO in mind.

Most of our top posts for organic traffic weren't created for SEO purposes at all – it just so happens that they started ranking well.

    10) Don't get discouraged.

Cliche, but true. I like to see results and measure successes. With blogging, it's not always that easy. Believe in yourself and your goals enough that you can keep going even when certain KPIs start to drop.

True blog growth only happens by consistently producing valuable, amazing, and unique content.

There's no hacks that will replace that. When we looked at the blogs we loved and knew were successful (like Buffer, Groove, and Shopify) one thing was clear — they just wrote awesome content.

No doubt it was informed by keywords and good research (the CoSchedule bloghas a spooky habit of knowing exactly what we are discussing this week) and built by outreach to influencers and supported by a few amazing "viral-y" posts, but ultimately these blogs just consistently produce well-written, well-researched and useful posts.

So that's the secret: Just keep swimming.

Canadian on international McDonald's tasting adventure

James McGowan really likes McDonald's -- so much that he's travelling the globe to review its menu items in every country he visits.

Originally from Amherstburg, Ont., McGowan, 28, started blogging about eating as a solo traveller several years ago.

But he said the biggest reactions came from his reviews of odd McDonald's offerings he'd find in faraway places. So in 2011, he launched a new blog -- travellingmcds.com -- dedicated only to the fast food chain.

While he's a fan of Mickey D's, and impressed by its adaptable menu to serve the tastes of different cultures, he can still be critical. Not everything is a winner.

"Some people say I might be overly critical with some of my reviews, saying it's only 'just' McDonald's," he said from Singapore, his latest stop. "I enjoy (and give a perfect 5/5) for items I really enjoy. I give more weight to something that is really unique or quirky.

"I enjoy reviewing those kind of items that you just wouldn't expect to find at a McDonald's in Canada."

Some of his favourite finds, in fact, are those most Canadian fans of McDonald's would find foreign.

"The best item Canadians might have never heard of are the savoury McDonald's pies," McGowan said. "We all grew up eating McDonald's apple pies. But around the world you could try pies like McDonald's spinach, curry crab, taro, red bean, tuna, cream stew and many more.

"These pies are often pretty good," he said. "But not always."

In fact, McDonald's has made some wild misses, he said.

Most of its fry seasonings -- or "shakers," as he calls them on the blog -- are horrible, McGowan says.

These are seasoning packs meant to be shaken in bags of french fries to season them to local tastes.

"It's something of a recent trend," he said, adding they started off in Asia, but have recently popped up in a few European McDonald's.

"The bad shakers are some of the worst tastes you can imagine: butter soy sauce from Japan is my all-time least favourite."

He's also no fan of the salted egg durian mooncake from Thailand.

    "That gives me nightmares."

McChocolate Potato -- Sapporo, Japan, February 2016

My first fry was one that had a near full coating of both sauces. After the initial fear of "is this going to be terrible?" the flavours hit me one at a time, the first was the dark chocolate, which as expected was a bit on the milky side, and wasn't at all bitter. Then you taste the traditional fry flavours including the salt, which is a big factor at play here. The last flavour you get is the white chocolate. The white chocolate was probably the biggest let-down here as it didn't really taste that much like white chocolate, it was still creamy, it just didn't have the bite that white chocolate is supposed to have.

McPizza Pepperoni Burger -- United Kingdom, November 2014

After I finished half the burger, I ended up taking off the rest of the beef, and simply having a pepperoni sandwich for lunch.

Wasabi Ebi Burger -- Singapore, November 2014

The Ebi Burger included the same whole-shrimp patty that I quite enjoyed last year. The shrimp were still surprisingly large, and they used the same decent carrot/cabbage veg mix which is appearing on burgers more and more in Singapore. But naturally, the biggest change was the wasabi sauce. The wasabi sauce was stronger than I had anticipated. It wasn't knock-your-socks-off nose-burning hot, but it was clearly wasabi flavoured.

Twitter to unveil refreshed timeline on March 3

New York: The micro-blogging site Twitter is set to roll out a refreshed design to its timeline display on March 3. With this change, people can start embedding profiles, lists, collections and more with the new embedded timeline, VentureBeat reported.

Twitter has also reportedly removed the "hide media" option which will enable tweets with media to be expanded by default.

The embedded timelines also have in-line sharing on every tweet to facilitate easy retweeting, the report added.

All existing timelines will also be upgraded automatically but will maintain the current sizing and customisation preferences.

Publishers "need a powerful visual storytelling tool to truly engage your users, so we`ve built an embedded grid which displays your curated content in a rich, responsive, media-forward format," Twitter wrote in an earlier blog post.

The move gives publishers and developers more control in how tweets around specific conversations can be featured.

The design is part of an effort by Twitter to show that its technology and service can have an impact outside of its domain.

Embedded tweets power more than one billion unique visitors to developer apps and sites each month.

The fashion-blogging world can often feel like a virtual counterpart to the physical experience of shopping. Stores barrage women with larger-than-life photos of airbrushed models as they peruse racks of clothes that always seem to look better on the pencil-thin mannequins than on their own bodies. Often, online fashion outlets re-emphasize this message by offering a curated view of items from brands that traffic in the idea that beautiful bodies are thin bodies.

While brands continue to spend millions on body-positivity campaigns to respond to consumers tired of Photoshopped images and a narrow view of beauty, L.A.-based fashionista Gabi Gregg promotes self-acceptance by living it.

Gregg, known as GabiFresh, started her fashion blog in 2008. By 2012, it had turned into a much more serious endeavor. At the time, Gregg didn't have any full-time fashion-blogger role models to follow. She didn't feel that the industry took fashion bloggers seriously at the time, either.

"I just knew there was a void in terms of resources for young, plus-size girls and thought starting a blog could be helpful," Gregg says via email. "I had no idea that it would turn into its own job."

Now, Gregg has 11,000 followers on Twitter and almost 300,000 on Instagram. But the beauty blogger does more than produce content for her blog and social media. Four years ago she launched a swimwear line; the latest collection was so hotly anticipated that its release momentarily crashed the website Swimsuitsforall.com.

Gregg teamed up with that brand to create a limited-edition collection of swimsuits geared toward plus-size shoppers. With the tagline "Let the beach be your palace," the collection centers around a regal theme. In a promotional photo, Gregg sits on a gold throne with a gold staff in her hand. Another shot shows her standing on a raised platform with staff in hand, gazing into the distance like a queen surveying her kingdom.

Blogger GabiFresh Created an Extremely Hot Line of Plus-Size Swimsuits

Photo courtesy of Digital Brand Architects

Everything from street style to movie stills inspired Gregg's design process for the collection. Each sketch revolved around a design that "hasn't been done before" in the plus-size fashion world.

"I always try to push myself to do something new and different, because as a consumer that's what I want to buy," Gregg says. "I try to make each suit a statement piece. This year we also expanded cup sizes to include H cups, which was really important to me."

When she's not working on her own designs, Gregg makes sure to get involved with other brands trying to offer more options to plus-size shoppers. Last year, she partnered with Target to provide feedback on the company's plus-size brand Ava & Viv. She also modeled for the autumn/winter lookbook for ASOS Curve.

In her writing, Gregg doesn't shy away from using terms that people might consider insensitive or even degrading. Case in point: the #fatkini movement. In 2012, Gregg wrote a blog post in which she shared photos of herself in a two-piece during a trip to Vegas. In the post, she exclaims: "I wore a vintage-inspired black-and-white striped one from SimplyBe that makes my enormous boobs look even bigger but I don't care — I loved the pattern too much to pass it up!" She urged her readers to embrace their own bodies and enjoy the season. "As always, I truly encourage you guys to get to the beach (or a pool) this summer — don't let body shame keep you from having a good time!"

Titled "Fatkini 2012," the blog post sparked a social media movement in which women shared photos of themselves in bikinis. The photos were a collective rebellion, a refusal to follow fashion rules that try to limit women with specific body types to specific clothing items.

"I cannot take credit for coming up with the word fatkini — that was already circulating in the community," Gregg wrote. "I popularized it because I had a large following, and so when I used it in my blog post it started to spread quickly."

Blogger GabiFresh Created an Extremely Hot Line of Plus-Size Swimsuits

The tongue-in-cheek term brazenly embraces a word used against many plus-sized women in a  malicious manner. But to Gregg, the word can only have power if you give it some.

"Part of my blog has always been body positivity, and even when I started it in 2008 I was comfortable describing myself as fat in a neutral way (my blog was originally called Young, Fat and Fabulous)," Gregg says. "Once you take the stigma out of the word, you realize it loses its power to make you feel badly — it's like, yeah, I'm fat ... and what? Who cares? It's just an adjective."

Gregg owes a lot of her confidence to her readers. Connecting with people on her blog and through social media proved integral to Gregg's defiant attitude and self-acceptance.

"I think the Internet is so amazing because it gives marginalized communities a chance to connect and make friends with other people like themselves that they may never have had a chance to meet in real life," Gregg says. "It makes us feel less alone and it gives us a collective voice; that's really powerful."
