Live blogging election night?

I guess we've done this a couple of times and it was pretty popular. TSO brought it up the other day, so I thought I'd put the question to the masses; do you guys want to have a live discussion on Election Night? I might draft a couple of you to help moderate, but that's easy enough. I just think it's a better time than sitting in your living room and shooting up your TVs.

I just want to get a measure of the participation for the software I have to use.

Blogging: A Powerful Tool With Endless Possibilities For Pharma Businesses

We all know that consumers go online to research for products they intend to purchase. This holds true for healthcare and pharmaceutical drugs as well. According to Princeton Survey Research Associates, 80 percent of adult internet researchers (about 93 million Americans) searched for at least one of the 16 major health topics online.

Blogging is an online platform that allows pharma companies to share product information more frequently than regular websites. This sharing of information can be done in a controlled environment that could ensure regulatory compliance when necessary. Patient education and informational articles provide value to online viewers who explore the internet for insights on specific health topics.

Before a pharma company decides to invest its efforts in blogging, it must spend time doing research, understand who their target readers are, locate a need and then find opportunities to fill in the gaps where information might seem inadequate or not readily available.

And yes, in case you were wondering, there are FDA (Food and Drug Administration) restrictions and guidelines for content in pharma-focused blogs as there are for any pharma website. Direct-to-consumer (DTC) compliance must be followed. For example. information regarding a product must be presented in a balanced manner and should weigh the risks and benefits of the products equally.

Bearing in mind these restrictions, pharma companies can opt for a branded or unbranded blog.

1. Branded Blogs

Branded blogs increase brand awareness, position the company as a campaigner in the disease segments, increase search engine ranking for keyword phrases and help create awareness in the target community about a specific disease state or product. It is a place where information seekers can find information and allow influencers to share the content in online forums.

However, there is a downside to branded blogs. These blogs need to include Important Safety Information (ISI), which is important, but can clutter and distract the reader. It can also reduce the reader's trust because the site appears as just another marketing avenue.

2. Unbranded Blogs

Unbranded blogs have fewer restrictions in the creation of content and can potentially add more value. Such blogs provide a platform for open discussion of a disease state, lifestyle conversation and empowering stories to share within the community. It is a more authentic, unbranded storytelling that allows the organization's voice to be heard, influence online sentiment and build keyword traffic.

Here are a few examples of unbranded pharma blogs.

Blogs also build followers as they are perfectly paired with social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. Every post done on a blog sends an alert via email to its subscribers and social networks get notified of every published blog post which can help drive more web traffic.

A well-maintained blog builds the reader's confidence in you, your company and your brand. It helps forge a strong connection with the reader and encourages the audience to return for relevant information. The process of blogging adds fresh content on your web page and allows for sharing of information within social communities. This generates leads to the website that in turn raises credibility and boosts search engine rankings.

Blogging is no longer just a hobby. It has serious business potential that can attract big pharma players. It is an influential tool with endless possibilities for today's businesses and should be included as part of a sound marketing plan.

After ten months of nurturing what people are fondly referring to as my "baby," I will finally be a published author.

Since people have written to congratulate me, it seemed only fitting today's blog party be a celebration.

There is a graduation cap on the cake since I am graduating from blogger to published author.

I realize I promised a guest at my last party hamburgers, but it's not every week you become a published author. The burgers, condiments, and refreshments originally scheduled for today's menu will have to wait.

Cowboys Vs. Eagles: “Wentz is showing a little bit of a dip in decision making recently.”

It's a huge game coming up on Sunday night. The Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles will battle it out for top billing in the NFC East. To get some information on the Eagles we talked to the enemy blog, in this case Bleeding Green Nation, about what we can expect from the visitors.

Blogging The Boys: Carson Wentz started off fast but the last couple of weeks have been more of a struggle. Talk about his play at quarterback, his strengths, weaknesses, etc.

Bleeding Green Nation: Wentz is like any NFL quarterback worth his weight: if his offensive line gives him enough time, more often than not he'll make a play. His last two performances have been by far his least impressive, but they also come swaddled in qualifiers. The Eagles' loss to Washington came with Halapoulivaati Vaitai starting at right tackle, the first start of the fifth-round rookie's career. It came against Ryan Kerrigan. It didn't go well. So that certainly didn't help Wentz. This past week, Wentz faced one of the top three defenses in the NFL, a defense that has made quarterbacks from Cam Newton to Aaron Rodgers look pedestrian at best, and awful at worst. Vaitai played better, and Wentz had more time to make plays, but against the Vikings' defense, there just aren't that many plays to be made. These last two weeks have not looked good, but they also haven't been representative of Wentz as a quarterback.

A weakness: very often, Wentz will stare down his first read. It's likely a tendency born out of operating in a Division I-AA college program, where defenses were easy to read, and to fool, and his talent got him by. It's not that Wentz isn't a cerebral quarterback; plenty of pre-draft analysts said he was one of the smartest quarterbacks to come out of college in years. For some reason, however, he has a tendency to telegraph his throws by locking on to one target. This hasn't led to interceptions this season — his three were unrelated to staring down wideouts — but it's led to incompletions, and to a slightly more predictable passing game. He's looked off safeties and corners a few times, but he needs to do more of it.

BTB: The Eagles are sacking quarterbacks and making plays on defense. Everyone knows about Fletcher Cox, but who else is getting the job done? And how are they doing it - scheme, blitzes, just good individual play?

BGN: The Eagles' sack numbers are looking gaudier than usual after Week 7 because they sacked Sam Bradford six times, which came about because the Vikings have backups at their offensive tackle positions, and Jim Schwartz unleashed a bevy of blitzes with a very talented front seven group. For the first five games of the season, Schwartz was reticent to rush more than four guys at a time; his thinking, and his scheme, is predicated on those four being enough to generate pressure while keeping the back end of his defense, including a weak cornerbacks corps, from being stretched too thin.

It worked for a few games, but it didn't work against Detroit or Washington, and by the time the Minnesota game rolled around, questions were arising about the effectiveness of Schwartz's rush-four approach. He blitzed more against Minnesota, and it worked. Against a better offensive line like Dallas's? Who knows if it'll work the same way. But guys like Brandon Graham, and, to a lesser extent, Vinny Curry and Connor Barwin, were able to get after Bradford last week in a big way. Graham has been the team's best pass rusher, and likely best, most consistent defender, all season long. Look out for No. 55 to make some plays.

BTB: Special teams seems to be a real weapon for Philly. What's going on there?

BGN: Dave Fipp is going on there. Of all the "revolutions" Chip Kelly brought with him, the emphasis he placed on special teams, and the man he brought with him to oversee them, remains his best work. We don't get much insight into what exactly Fipp does with his men behind the scenes each week (players are reluctant to talk about details, considering how well they're playing), but it's been three-plus years of league-best special teams play, dating all the way back to Chip's first season with the Eagles.

Fipp's units consistently break return touchdowns, and they block kicks and punts, too. Fipp has also figured out how to turn Caleb Sturgis field goals into about as sure a thing as there is. Caleb Sturgis! There's some kind of mad science going on behind the scenes, and Eagles fans aren't asking questions. But Fipp is the point man for all of it. He's incredible.

BTB: How much does the Ron Brooks injury affect the secondary? Is it a cause for concern having to move Malcolm Jenkins around?

BGN: The Brooks injury is an interesting one. Jenkins is on the record many times as saying he actually prefers playing in the slot compared to playing deep safety, so at least for him, this is a welcome change. What it does, however, is force either Jaylen Watkins or Jalen Mills into action on a regular basis, which could prove to hurt the team in the long run. Watkins has played well recently, but his ceiling is likely limited. It'll help being paired with a playmaker like Rodney McLeod. Still, he's a notable downgrade at safety when Jenkins has to rotate to the slot. Mills, meanwhile, has flashed a few times so far this year, but by and large it seems he doesn't have the necessary speed to stay with outside receivers in the league, especially guys like Dez Bryant.

The Eagles' cornerbacks were already their weakest position group, along with wide receivers. The Brooks injury does nothing to help the situation.

BTB: If you were coaching Dallas, how would you attack the Eagles defense and offense?

BGN: An interesting question. Through the first four weeks of the season, Carson Wentz was one of the most effective quarterbacks in the league against the blitz, competing somewhere near 70 percent of his passes for three touchdowns and no interceptions against the blitz. With Lane Johnson at right tackle and Jason Peters at left tackle, combined with Wentz's excellent pocket presence and mobility, opposing blitzes weren't doing much, if anything, to disrupt the rookie's throws. But with Vaitai in at right tackle instead of Johnson, and Wentz showing a little bit of a dip in decision making recently, I would be very tempted to bring pressure early and often. That's what Minnesota did last week, and Wentz clearly looked uncomfortable in the pocket for basically the entire first half, throwing two interceptions — including an awful one — in the first quarter.

I'd also advise my corners and safeties, as most teams have this season, to focus on taking away the underneath routes. The Eagles don't have a field-stretching playmaker (hence the rumors about trading for guys like Torrey Smith and Alshon Jeffery), so they don't draw up very many deep balls for guys like Nelson Agholor and Josh Huff. The wide receiving corps is very, very hamstrung by a lack of speed and talent, which in turn limits the kinds of plays Doug Pederson can call. Don't sell out on the underneath routes, because a guy like Agholor can still hit you deep occasionally, but definitely be ready for short stuff all night long. It's the Eagles' bread and butter. Take it away, and you're in business.

Writers looking for specific jobs should consider BloggingPro, since it filters some higher-paying gigs from big boards like Indeed. "We screen ads as strictly as possible in order to make sure they're legitimate jobs," says Noemi Tasarra-Twigg, Editor of Splashpress Media, via email. If there's negative feedback on an employer, BloggingPro removes their ads.

Listings must indicate a rate. Jobs focus on freelance writing, blogging, and copywriting. It's mostly freelance and contract jobs, but there are also part-time gigs. Most are remote or telecommute, with a few in specific cities like Los Angeles, Washington DC, and Montreal.

Each listing contains a link to the original posting or a contact email. Longtime freelance writer Brian Scott started these sites and approves each listing. Freelance, remote, offsite, home-based, telecommute, contract, and virtual jobs are included. Scott says popular jobs are content writing/SEO writing for digital or traditional marketing agencies, creating industry-specific content, and commercial copywriting for businesses and ad agencies, crafting web pages, brochures, emails, white papers, and marketing materials.

Common job listings are for freelance writing, magazine writing, blogging, SEO writing, copywriting, technical writing, and resume writing. Common topics include food, fashion, travel, automobiles, sports, and real estate. Scott says certain jobs exclude rates because "clients want to assess the writer's experience beforehand and then negotiate a rate, instead of committing to one."

Contena is new and pricey, but offers a lot. Currently, you must join a waiting list and pay a high fee when you get an invite to join. Scout, the name of Contena's job board, allows you to filter for category, job quality, minimum rate per word, full-time, contract, or submission as you search for online writing jobs.

Each job has a quality rating from low to very high to give a sense of the pay, even if the rate isn't provided. Plus, members can review Rates, which includes over 1,600 company pay listings. Kevin Fleming, founder of Contena, says their full-time, remote writing positions pay an average of $70,000 per year.

Staff at Contena find all listings. Common requests are for a writer, editor, web content writer, email marketing, content creator, journalist, copywriter, or medical writer. Frequently mentioned niches include education, sports, architecture, food, travel, business, social media, accounting, finance, and business.

If you're looking to break into editorial writing, Ed2010 is the job board for you. Many of the top newsstand magazines post ads here, and you can grab editor emails to use in your pitches. Even though this site is for beginners, rates are good.

Ed2010 has full-time, part-time, temporary, and freelance positions, as well as paid and unpaid internships. Many jobs are remote work. "Eighty-five percent of our jobs are for people who are just breaking in, so zero to four years out of college, and looking to gain as much experience as possible," says Chandra Turner, founder and president of Ed2010, and executive editor of Parents Magazine.

Listing employers—a recent search found Hearst, Meredith, Time Inc., Food Network, Martha Stewart, Redbook, and Rodale—must provide a name and email. Ed2010 is particular, and if an applicant has a bad experience, they put the company on probation and won't run their ads.

The most commonly posted positions are for a content writer or content editor for lifestyle websites, plus editorial writing gigs at newsstand magazines and start-up websites. "We're very picky about paid positions for freelancers. I need to know what the salary is, because I want to make sure they're paying at least minimum wage," explains Turner.

Going to cruise just a handful of boards? Make FlexJobs one of them as they offer great gigs with flexible schedules from high-quality employers. Beginner and seasoned writers will find telecommuting, flexible schedule, full-time, part-time, contract, and freelance positions.

Jobs are scattered throughout the world, with a few having location requirements. "Writers, in particular, will find a huge variety of positions, from blogging to white papers, technical manuals to lesson plans, respected news outlets to popular how-to websites," explains Brie Weiler Reynolds, senior career specialist at FlexJobs, via email.

Recent listings include offers for a technical writer, desk writer, copywriter, proposal writer, medical writer, content marketing specialist, government editor, digital content author, and script editor. FlexJobs listings supply a link to the company's website.

If you're frequently on Indeed, Freelance Job Openings.com, Freelance Blogging Jobs, Ed2010, Craigslist, Mediabistro, or BloggingPro, you could skip them and use FreelanceWriting.com and the Morning Coffee Newsletter, which filter a ton from these sites. Top companies like Under Armour, Google, Houzz, Dell, and Amazon have jobs posted, along with universities and magazines. There's also a writing contests board, plus submission guidelines for 700-plus publications. Many listed full-time gigs pay well.

Jobs include blogging, editing, copywriting, social media, journalism, and technical writing. Hot topics consist of science, law, fashion, and tech, says Erik Episcopo, project manager of Freelance Writing.com and the Morning Coffee Newsletter.

If you're a seasoned freelancer looking for well-paid, thoroughly-vetted gigs, the Freelance Writers Den's Junk-Free Job Board is for you. This board is one of the few listed here that includes other writer resources in that subscription fee—300-plus training recordings, 24/7 support forums, and multiple new trainings each month. Job-board manager Millie Lapidario says she includes a link to the original posting.

Jobs are pulled from FlexJobs (the Den has an arrangement that allows the Junk-Free board to post up to a dozen of the best FlexJobs writer gigs a week), as well as from Journalism Jobs, Gorkana, LinkedIn, Indeed, the Morning Coffee Newsletter, Dice, Monster, Twitter, Glassdoor, and ZipRecruiter, just to name a few. All types of freelance work situations are included, along with the occasional full-time job.

Listings are heavily screened—Lapidario visits the list site or Glassdoor and determines if there's a budget for a writer. If she receives negative feedback on a posting, she bans the company. Freelance writer, copywriter, reporter, and journalist are common jobs, as are blogger, marketing content writer, social media specialist, and content marketing specialist.

Searching Craigslist or Indeed? You may want to cruise Freelance Writing Gigs instead for the best of what's available on those mass boards. This site, headed by Noemi Tasarra-Twigg who is the freelance writing jobs community manager and editor of Splashpress Media, has one of the smallest boards with rates on the lower end.

Commonly featured jobs include copywriter, content writer, blogger, freelance writer, editor/proofreader, tech, marketing, education, and content marketing writer. Ads provide either a link to the original posting or a direct email.

You'll need to create an account and sign up for Glassdoor to view their listings—but it's worth it. Big companies are prevalent, as is detailed information to help you meet the right clients. It also includes info on freelance writer salaries.

Unlike other sites, Glassdoor's job postings come with stats like company size, revenue, headquarters, founding date, reviews, salaries, CEO approval rating, and percentage of workers who recommend their company. Allison Berry, Glassdoor community expert, recommends signing up for an account to save jobs, using the job search tool to filter results, and uploading your resume for quick submission.

Jobs are based across America, with many remote and telecommute. Recent posters include Thrillist, Time Warner Cable, Ghirardelli Chocolate, AOL, newspapers, magazines, universities, and other Fortune 500 companies. Freelance writer, freelance copywriter, blogger, SEO marketing specialist, magazine jobs, and technical writer jobs are posted frequently.

If you want to only scan a single board, Indeed is an aggregator site that provides a good roundup of freelance writing jobs from many sites. The downside: You'll have to wade through the low-paying gigs to find the good ones.

Companies like CBS, Time Warner Cable, and Fortune 500 companies are featured here. Many listing show a company star rating (1-5) as well as a link to the company page with info on salaries, management, culture, and work/life balance.

The full spectrum of job types are represented. Common positions sought include freelance writer, web editor, freelance journalist, content writer, healthcare freelance writer, business writer, food writer, blogger, social media manager, contract journalist, and SEO writer.

"I've used Indeed a lot, but don't anymore because client quality appears to be low," says freelance writer Kaitlin Morrison. "I did land one client, but they were a nightmare, really cheap, and disorganized." She says it was hard to land gigs, even with well written, custom letters of introduction.

Jobs are throughout the country, with many in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, and Atlanta. Recent listings include calls for writing, editing, freelance copywriter, blogger, technical writer, content writer, marketing writer, social media manager, and medical writer.

Additionally, LinkedIn offers ProFinder: a new, free service set up specifically for freelancers to connect with employers. Create a profile, set up job alerts, and answer only requests you like. When a potential client posts a job that matches your skills, you get an email that includes all the info you need to submit a proposal and bid on the project. As of September 2016, it has 52,000 members, and delivers highly targeted job alerts.

Mediabistro is a wonderful niche board, as it has many beginner and experienced writer opportunities at high to mid-range companies. "There's a lot to be said for looking at a job board that addresses your niche because the advertisers and employers are targeting that audience," says Katie Hottinger, senior content strategist at Mediabistro.

A majority of the jobs are based in New York City, with California, Washington DC, Massachusetts, Illinois, and New Jersey also prominent. Freelance writer, email marketing specialist, social media strategist, copywriter, and digital content/copywriter are common job titles featured in Mediabistro ads.

Started by Tom Ewer, founder of Leaving Work Behind, Paid to Blog Jobs has positions all over the US, with some remote and telecommute.

Catherine Here, lead jobs researcher for Paid to Blog Jobs, says they offer part-time and freelance jobs plus paying internships. Most jobs are topic-based requests for writers in food, technology, business, travel, news, and law.

Writer and editor Evan Jensen says he joined this board a few years ago, but unsubscribed after a month. Although he saw many jobs in his niche, they were at low rates, and originated from boards he could view for free.

ProBlogger provides great resources for bloggers, but gigs listed on their board usually don't pay well. Part-time, virtual, remote, or telecommute jobs are available, with few location-specific requests.

Many smaller companies and websites post here, some seeking extremely specific skills for minimal pay. Niches such as technology, fitness, parenting, finance, healthcare, and business are common along with titles including content writer, freelance writer, marketing/SEO writer, and freelance journalist.
