Twitter won't count links, photos in 140-character limit

The change may happen in the coming weeks, and it would remove one of the more annoying product hurdles that has persisted on Twitter for years.

Shrek/DreamworksTwitter will stop counting links and images against its traditional 140-character limit, according to a new report from Bloomberg's Sarah Frier.

Links now take up 23 characters, even after the micro-blogging service shortens them.

Twitter's been making some big changes to its service as of late, including dropping the 140 character limit on Direct Messages and an algorithmic timeline that aims to show you Tweets that it thinks you'll care most about first.

Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Mashable. The tech firm initially started with that limit so it could fit into a single SMS message, which is 160 characters.

Changing the character limit for tweets would be a significant move that would affect a number of powerful third-party Twitter clients like Tweetbot and Twitterrific. But the quick, concise nature of Tweets has helped set the site apart from the competition. Removing the character requirement for links and photos may encourage users to add more media to their posts.
