Saturday Morning Garden Blogging - Spotting Rainbows in the Garden

Photo-obsessed...

Have you ever noticed how flowers and feather colours mimic one another?  It's warbler migration time and, for me, that means prime bird watching season, and at the same time the flowers also putting on a pretty show in the garden.  Here are some of my colour observations:

The Orange

The Yellow

The Green

Top: Black-throated Blue Warbler (female); Middle: Northern Parula; Bottom: Red-eyed Vireo

The Blue

The Red

The Rose

I do think that having a fountain and pond with a falls draws in the number of birds during spring and while not all shown, I've spotted 15 different kinds of warblers landing in the yard within one weeks time this year. There are also two wild cherry trees (prunus serotina), aphid infested wild roses, and a yard that doesn't get sprayed with insecticide of any sort.  Many times I think of ripping out the decorative grass growing behind the fountain, but realize, too, that the birds take the spent seed heads that create those fluffy tufts which they rip out for making their nests.  My garden is wildly messy at the moment, but I'm realizing makes a haven for both migrating and resident birds, the corners of overgrowth give them protection and great places to bug, grub and worm hunting.

So currently, I have the neat planted flowering garden on one side of the yard (albeit the lawn needs mowing), while I allow the back garden to run a bit rampant for the birds to forage. This side of the yard is planted for the hummingbirds — closer to the house, easier to spot them to photograph!  And as you can see, more pots of plants to be planted. That seems never-ending during growing season.

How are your gardens growing?  Do you plant for birds, butterflies, both?
