On Wednesday morning, the Indonesian government announced that it had decided to ban the blogging and social-networking platform due to pornographic content.

But by the afternoon, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology confirmed the U-turn to The Jakarta Globe.

Ismail Cawidu, the ministry's head of public relations, said the government would try a different tack instead.

He was quoted by the national daily as saying: "We will not block access to Tumblr, but we will communicate with them (Yahoo, the proprietor of the New York-based company) and ask them to close any access to pornography that may exist."

According to an earlier report by The Jakarta Globe, Azhar Hasyim, the ministry's e-business director, said the ban would be enforced without any prior communication with the blogging and social-networking platform.

He added that 477 other websites with pornographic content would also be blocked and that the ministry had issued orders to Internet service providers in Indonesia to start blocking access to those websites.

In what is viewed as perhaps more than a coincidence, the about-face happened after Indonesian President Joko Widodo visited the headquarters of several major technology companies in Silicon Valley, California.

During his visit, he met Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey and Google chief executive Sundar Pichai, among others.
