Mumbai, September 4: A most unusual trend was seen on the micro blogging website Twitter on Sunday- the day of her canonization. 'Fraud Teresa' was one of the top trends on Twitter in India, with people calling out the Nobel Peace Prize winner on the eve of her 19th Death Anniversary. Twitter users were sharing their own theories and critiques of the nun, who has International fame for her work amongst the impoverished populace of Kolkata, especially the city's children. Mother Teresa will be elevated to Sainthood at a ceremony in Vatican city, Rome, which will take place at 1.30 pm today (10 am local time).
Millions have right now gathered in the city to witness the canonization of the nun from Macedonia, to be anointed Saint Teresa of Calcutta. However, in India, people are sharing articles and web stories, claiming to 'bust the myth' of the Saint, calling her out for putting her faith before her work. This incidentally happens to be the argument of those who are amongst the most staunch critics of the nun. Besides this, Mother Teresa has also been criticised for providing substandard medical care, and also for promoting suffering as a virtue, rather than really trying to alleviate it. She is also criticised for promoting her work to a global audiences, who began to see her as a hero and a messiah of the impoverished and the abandoned. There is might be some merit in both sides of the arguments. Opinions about Mother Teresa's work might continue to be divided.
