Cowboys @ 49ers: “The 49ers are underdogs, but this is a winnable game for them.”

It's Friday before a game, so that means we talk to the enemy to get some understanding of the Cowboys opponent. This week it's a fantastic blog, Niners Nation. Check it out.

Blogging The Boys: The Chip Kelly Era has arrived in San Francisco. How do you feel about that personally, and how do you think the majority of the fanbase feels about it?

Niners Nation: People are pretty excited about Chip Kelly. That does not mean they are exactly psyched about the state of the offense, but the idea of Chip Kelly and some of what we're seeing is exciting so far. It is worth noting that this is still a team quarterbacked by Blaine Gabbert. The team has talent, but it is deficient in several areas. However, fans are more inclined to blame general manager Trent Baalke for the roster issues. The quarterback position remains a problem, with Blaine Gabbert struggling, and the team not prepared to start Colin Kaepernick in part because of his continued recovery from surgeries last fall. That being said, Kelly has handled the issues around the team perfectly and brought the locker room together, and considering how things ended in Philadelphia, that's pretty big.

BTB: The 49ers defense was lights out against the Rams to start the season, but has really struggled in Week 2 and 3 giving up points. What's happening there?

NN: Well, the Rams were entirely one-dimensional, with Case Keenum unable to get anything going in the passing game. That being said, they looked good containing Todd Gurley, having great tackling technique while remaining disciplined on assignments. Let's just say, that did not continue against much better offenses in Carolina and Seattle.

I have a hunch the 49ers defense is going to be better at home than away, which is often what happens with teams that are not exactly world beaters. There's talent on the defense, but inconsistency and discipline will be two things to watch all season long. They've got a lot of new young players, spending a first round pick on Oregon DT DeForest Buckner this year, and a first round pick on Oregon DT Arik Armstead last year. They've got Glenn Dorsey back in the mix, which is key for the line.

In the secondary, cornerback Jimmie Ward is unlikely to play this week due to a quad strain. Keith Reaser is the guy who will likely replace him, and look for rookie fourth round pick Rashard Robinson to get some snaps as the first cornerback off the bench. The key again is there is a lot of young talent that will be inconsistent for stretches.

BTB: I see the 49ers offense struggles to convert 3rd downs. Is it the play-calling? The personnel? Some combination of those?

NN: Yes? The 49ers had a couple big issues last week against Seattle. They were throwing short of the sticks in part because the Seahawks were playing off and happy to give up the shorter stuff. And while that can sometimes lead to yards after the catch, the Seahawks are strong when it comes to containing YAC. It felt like the 49ers did not sufficiently adjust in that regard.

At the same time, the 49ers have serious talent questions at the wide receiver and tight end positions. Torrey Smith is a deep threat who is not overly utilized. After that, the 49ers have a mix of Jeremy Kerley and Quinton Patton, and recently signed Keshawn Martin. Not exactly a who's who of pass catchers. And the tight end position has its own set of issues. Vance McDonald has been a regular target for Blaine Gabbert, but he missed Wednesday practice and was limited on Thursday. Friday will tell us more, and even if he plays, he might be banged up.

BTB: I've seen a lot of talk lately about the failure of GM Trent Baalke and the talent level of the roster. Assess that situation for us.

NN: We could talk about this for a couple days and not come to a resolution. Before we get to personnel, let's get to the real issues. Jim Harbaugh left after the 2014 season, and there is a strong belief it was because he and Trent Baalke did not get along. Since then, Colin Kaepernick has had turmoil with the front office, and it is primarily his relationship with the GM that has been problematic. He signed for less guaranteed money thinking the team would use some of the savings on some of the 49ers pending free agents the last two offseasons. They did not, and the relationship soured. He's not exactly viewed as a people person.

On to football. Baalke is the kind of GM who builds from the inside out, focusing on the offensive line and defensive line. He has been strong when it comes to adding talent on the line. The problem is outside of that. Particularly on offense. Baalke has had a large share of hits and misses. The failures have come in large part on the offensive side of the ball, primarily at wide receiver. The team spent a first round pick on A.J. Jenkins in 2012, and he was a total bust. The team spent fourth round picks on wide receivers in 2013 (Quinton Patton), 2014 (Bruce Ellington), and 2015 (DeAndre Smelter), and then a sixth round pick this past year (Aaron Burbridge). Patton is starting opposite Torrey Smith, but he has not done much of anything. Ellington is on injured reserve, and Smelter was waived with an injury settlement. The team spent money on Torrey Smith, but they haven't had a good wide receiver draft pick since Michael Crabtree.

On the other hand, one strength for Baalke is late round picks. Some late round talent that are contributing are OT Trent Brown (7th), DT Quinton Dial (5th), CB Keith Reaser (5th), OLB Aaron Lynch (5th), and Daniel Kilgore (C). The problem is his early round picks are not making nearly enough of an impact. Free safety Eric Reid has been the biggest success, and will likely get a contract extension. Jimmie Ward dealt with a foot injury in 2014, bounced back with a solid 2015, and has been off to a solid, but sometimes inconsistent season in 2016. Arik Armstead is looking solid as a pass rusher, but is dealing with some shoulder issues this year.

BTB: What's the scenario for the 49ers to win on Sunday, what has to happen and who are the main players needed to putt it off?

NN: The 49ers are underdogs, but this is a winnable game for them. However, if they are going to win this game, it will be from a strong defensive effort and a big game from Carlos Hyde. Dak Prescott is obviously off to a strong start, but I'd like to think there will be a bump or two in the road. 49ers defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil uses a variety of biltzes and I imagine he mixes it up against Prescott to try and confuse him. And with La'el Collins expected to miss the game and Tyron Smith dealing with back issues, it could open the door for the pass rush on the blind side.

Of course, Ezekiel Elliott will also have something to say about this. The Cowboys offensive line is still better than the Rams, so I'm not exactly expecting a repeat of Todd Gurley's performance. But the 49ers will win this game if they can bottle up Elliott and be technically sound in their tackling.

On the offensive side of the ball, the 49ers need a big game from running back Carlos Hyde. They have struggled on third downs, so how about they just convert new first downs on first and second down? Easy enough, right? But seriously, if they can get into 3rd and 3 or less with some kind of regularity, I think Blaine Gabbert can actually get some things done. They can't win with the deep ball, but they can win on the shorter game.

Thanks for the knowledge, Niners Nation.

How I Earned $45K Self-Publishing 10 E-Books: Top Takeaways

How I earned $45K self-publishing 10 e-books! Makealivingwriting.comIt feels like yesterday that I was self-publishing my very first e-book, Make a Living Writing: The 21st Century Guide. I made quite a few mistakes putting that out, and it's no longer available (cough).

But I lived and learned, and created better e-books. As I prepped to release my latest, Small Blog, Big Income: Advanced Ninja Tricks for Profitable Blogging, I realized I now have TEN e-books available for sale, counting my free e-book for subscribers.

I've learned a ton along the way, so I thought I'd save others some time and unpack it all.

I've made over $45,000 selling e-books over the past 6 years, without a lot of effort (I added it up when I was writing the new e-book, because I was curious!). So it can add up to a substantial chunk of change, over time.

What helps me earn well from each e-book I release these days? Here are 17 hard-won tips for self-publishing success:

1. Ask your readers first

As with any product you develop, begin by discovering what your readers desperately need—and therefore, would spend money to learn from you. Take a survey, run a question-driven blog post and read the comments, hold a tweetchat, start a Facebook thread. However you do it, find out what your readers' pains are, and think about how you can solve them.

2. Research the competition

Once you know what readers want, it's time to research the competition to fine-tune how to position your e-book, and to tweak the title to use the best possible keywords.

Are there already a lot of recent e-books on this topic? Who are the top sellers? What Amazon categories do they use? What are they charging? This competitive intel will help you tweak your e-book concept. It definitely did for me with that first Small Blog, Big Income e-book, which started out as "How I Earn a Six-Figure Income From My Tiny Niche Blog."

These days, I'm using Dave Chesson's great research tool KDP Rocket (yes, since I use and love it, I affiliate sell it), which gives you quick answers to these key competitive-research questions. The revised title has "niche blogger," "make money blogging," other useful key terms the initial title idea lacked.

A review of current offerings and feedback from my author mastermind showed me that my initial title choice might feel scammy to some (even though that's exactly what the content is), and it wasn't different enough from other offerings. Don't write an e-book in a vacuum!

3. Short is better than long

People don't want to read endless e-books like my first one, which topped 200 pages! Better to break up your material into multiple e-books than to try to cram it all into one. Yes, Amazon is now penalizing shorter e-books in author royalties…but short e-books are still more effective in building reader loyalty, especially in nonfiction.

4. Write a series

Nothing is easier to sell than a sequel to a previous e-book. I've done a series of four Freelance Writers Den e-books adapted from bootcamps, and the new Small Blog, Big Income e-book is the sequel to the original Small Blog, Big Income: A Niche Blogger's 7-Step Success Formula.

Know what I did to sell the new one? I sent an email to everyone who bought the first one, and made hundreds of sales. Easy!

5. Cheap is better than expensive

Trust me, you will earn more in the long run with lower-priced e-books, nearly every time. On Amazon, anything above $3.99 is real tough sledding.

I recently heard from a new writer who wanted me to affiliate sell his $27 e-book. I said, "Have you visited Amazon lately?"

Remember, though they may be a paid product, e-books are rarely a huge earner, especially in the short run. Most e-book sellers price them low to get people into their marketing funnel and sell them pricier stuff — their consulting, premium courses, and the like.

If you're dreaming of selling a $79 e-book as your primary earner, you'll have a hard time making sales, unless you're a big name with a built-in audience dying to buy anything you put out.

6. Repurposing is good

I've done well turning everything from live event transcripts to collections of blog posts into e-books. People are not offended that you're recycling—different buyers like to buy things in different formats, and some like e-books.

Don't think you have to write from scratch! Aside from my very first e-book and the two Small Blog, Big Income entries, all of my other e-books are repurposed content.

7. Co-authors rock

Yes, Collaborators are terrific for e-book writing! Most of my e-books have co-authors—I even did one with 40 different authors that I edited and presented. That means I had 40 other writers who would promote the e-book.

Curated content rocks. Collaborating will allow you to generate more e-books faster, which is important.

8. Write many e-books

The easiest way to sell more copies of your e-book is to have another e-book come out. Readers will be more receptive and less annoyed than if you keep flogging that one, old e-book. A new e-book gets readers looking over—and buying—your old titles.

When you have additional e-books, you can also create 'bundle' sales of multiple e-books at a discount. That's been one of my most popular types of e-book offers.

9. Refresh and update your e-books

You can also redesign the cover of an older e-book, update and introduce a new edition, or otherwise refresh an older e-book and promote it to create a sales surge. Linda Formichelli and I did this with our co-written e-book 13 Ways to Get the Writing Done Faster, which initially had a cheesy, homemade cover — and we've been selling copies steadily ever since.

10. Invest in design

I don't go on Fiverr and pay $10 for a cover. I usually invest $1200-$2000 in my e-book publishing process—and make it back the first week. You can compensate for the relatively modest size of your audience and look more successful with better-quality e-book design.

I use the webmaster team I use for my blog and Den community, but if you want turnkey help, I'm hearing good things about Archangel Ink's services and have seen nice products from them (so I recommend and affiliate sell them). I learned about them from self-publishing expert Steve Scott, who I read regularly. Find some self-publishing successes and watch what they do — you'll save yourself a ton of time and effort.

11. Participate in multi-author events

Again, people: Think collaboration! Instead of trying to sell your e-book all by yourself, team up with 5-10 other authors and do it together. Do it in person at a bookstore, do it online—but get together.

That way, you all pool your small lists and end up with a much bigger audience. I recently ran a 99-cent, one-day, multi-author e-book sale off a simple blog post that netted thousands of dollars for the authors (without paying for ads on BookBub or any of the other book-promo sites).

12. Know your goal

Know what you're trying to accomplish with your e-book before you write, price, and market it. If it's supposed to be your cash cow, you'll write, design, and market it differently than if it's your $1 tripwire.

Some authors use their e-books to build authority and land lucrative public speaking gigs, or fill seats at their live or online conferences. With this new e-book, for instance, I'm finally acceding to many requests that I offer blog coaching, and debuting that service. When your e-book is the tip of a sales iceberg of related services, you can earn a lot more.

13. Sell at the top and in your endpapers

One recently learned trick for me is to offer one cheap additional e-book before the table of contents in your e-book. That way, it shows up in Amazon's 'Look Inside the Book' excerpt, and exposes readers to more of your items.

Flip to the end of my e-books, and you'll see a link to every single product I offer. Don't forget to update your endpapers in your e-books as you add new products. Your reader is now a qualified buyer from you, and that means they're a good bet to buy additional things from you.

14. Presell, presell, presell

Selling e-books is all about preparing the way. It's impossible to start too early, talking about an e-book! Chat in social media about your draft, your cover possibilities, your topic. Publish blog posts on the topic. Guest post ahead of the release.

Offer your readers discounts for reserving presale copies. Get the buzz going, before official launch day. At this point, the bulk of the money I earn from e-books happen during presales! And running a presale also means you've got a list of people who've read the book that you can email on release day and ask to leave Amazon reviews.

15. 99 cents is the new free

A lot of authors are hooked on the exclusive, free Kindle Direct Publishing promo e-book launch. They'll even pay BuckBooks and the like hundreds to promote their free offer! I've tried it myself, and I'm here to say I think these free giveaways are a crock—especially for bloggers with a smaller audience. Yes, you get some sales after them, because the freebie event spikes your rankings…but the impact tends to be fleeting.

You get thousands of free downloads, get all excited that buzz is spreading…and often, end up making $300 when you switch to asking folks to pay for your e-book. At this point, I've heard too many reports of that from other self-publishing authors. I think this is a strategy that once worked well, but now that the market is super-saturated with e-book releases, it just doesn't anymore.

Why doesn't a KDP freebie event lead to a lot of sales? Because free downloaders are NOT buyers. They're freeloaders. So their downloads don't mean much. Instead, do a 99-cent sale. That's a way to get a large pool of qualified buyers — especially if you follow this next tip:

16. Capture Amazon buyers' emails

The big problem with selling on Amazon is you don't know who buys. You don't get a list of previous purchasers you can sell the next e-book or class.

Solve this by leaving something out of your e-book that they must come to your site and give you their email address to get. In the case of my newest Small Blog, Big Income installment, it's a special report with 90 Actionable Tips for earning more from blogging. I create fillable workbooks for many of my e-books, so readers have a good place to take notes and build their own action plan, based on the tips.

The other way to know who your buyers are is…

17. Sell on your own site and keep all the money

Yes, I know I depart from the pack on this one. My Amazon sales are only a small part of my e-book sales strategy, and with the e-tail giant's ever-changing rules and policies which seem to result in ever-smaller author royalties, I recommend it be a small part of yours.

When you sell an e-book on your own site, to your own audience, you are in complete control of the process, and you keep all the money. This is what you built your niche audience for—so you can sell them directly, and not be dependent on the whims of Amazon's algorithms to earn! I fail to see why I should give Amazon 70% of the money for selling an e-book to someone I already know.

On Amazon, you cannot run bundle sales or offer readers special discounts the general public doesn't get. And that makes it a bad place to debut a book, in my view.

I put my e-books on Amazon after presales and after launch week, when I'm done offering deals to my audience. Yes, I've been told I'm a fool, and if I went KDP Select exclusively and emailed all my peeps to buy on Amazon, I could rank well and Amazon would become a cash machine…and all I can say is, I'm skeptical.

As a niche blogger, it's key that you keep rewarding your subscribers and make them feel special when they buy. They should feel they're getting the inside line and that it's well worth staying on your list. If they do, they will buy again and again. Send them to Amazon to buy your book, and…well, it's less special.

I also feel confident that there's no way I would have earned close to $50,000 selling these e-books via Amazon. They just take too big of a chunk of your sales.

Track the trends

If I had a final point to add, it would be that the world of online self-publishing keeps on changing. The points above outline my philosophy to this point, but the playing field keeps shifting. Try new things, and stay on top of what's going on in the e-book sales marketplace to see where you have the best opportunity.

6 Tips To Help Women Entrepreneurs Blog Effectively

Posted on September 28, 2016 by Lioness Staff

Blogging With Purpose: How to Create Wins For Your Company

imageBlogging is one of the most beneficial things a business can do for their company. As a source of information that gives customers, clients, and followers a reason to check back in on your website, your blog has the power to turn website visitors into loyal customers or clients.

Unfortunately, not everyone takes advantage of all that blogging can offer. If you're not blogging effectively, you could be missing out on all the things that a strong blog post can do for you.

To get serious about your blogging, here are 6 tips for women entrepreneurs for blogging with purpose to create more "wins" for your company:

1. Know Your Audience

The people who read your blog determine how well your company is doing. If your blog audience is not the same as your target customer base, you're sure to feel disjointed. You need to pay attention to who your audience actually is, what they're looking for, and what information you can provide them with.

Read their social media posts, check which blogs are getting the most attention, and send out surveys or evaluations if you need to. Pull your new topic ideas based on what information they need, not what you want to write.

2. Don't Sell

Your blog is not the place to put a sales pitch. Instead, your blog should act as a platform where customers or potential customers can go to get more information or get a better understanding of what you can provide. It should not feel pushy or salesy, but rather promotional and helpful.

If you're promoting a product, describe what that product can do for a buyer, when it would be useful, and how it can be used. This background information will get them more prepared to purchase when the correct time comes. When reading a blog, people want to be informed (and entertained) and want to find the solution to a problem.

3. Put Your Posts Out There

Very few blogs have enough of a following that they don't need to alert readers when a new post is up. Unfortunately, you probably aren't one of the few who can get away without some kind of share. If you want people to read your new blog posts, you need to let them know when or where they can do so.

The best place to share your new post is on your social media accounts. As a quick and easy way to let your fan base know there is new content posted, social media is great for gauging reactions and receiving new shares from loyal readers.

4. Know Your Stuff

If you try to create a blog post about something you know nothing about or is extremely generic, your audience is going to be able to tell. You'll probably ramble, not make clear points, and your readers won't make it to the end of the post. Not only can this be damaging for your online reputation but it can also hurt your SEO efforts.

Instead of trying to reach too far out of your comfort zone, talk about things you know or topics that you've researched extensively. If you really want to put up a post about a new topic, consider having a guest post from an expert.

5. Use Your SEO Strategy

One of the biggest benefits for a blog is how it can contribute to a company's SEO strategy. As the easiest way to consistently add new content to your site, blogging gives you a space to implement your keywords and appeal to search engines.

Optimizing a blog post for a search engine may take some effort, but the return is worth it if done correctly. You'll need to use keywords and variants thereof throughout your content, but only where it is helpful and makes sense in context. Linking to other applicable and helpful articles in your post can also have a big impact with the reader. Having a featured image on your post with alternative text can also help your post appear in image searches. Please understand that on-page SEO is a great place to start, but there are many other factors when it comes to ranking.

6. Don't Give Up

Blogging is important but you probably aren't going to see the benefit after your first post. This doesn't mean you should shut down your blog and call it quits. You will want to keep up with your blog if you really want to see the benefit it can bring.

With each blog post that you put up, look at how it compares to the post before. Are you getting new attention? Has your readership gone up? What did you do differently to bring in new readers? As you post more and more, you should see a steady increase in followers and visitors.

Don't waste your time with a blog that is inefficient. With these six tips, your blog will have a purpose and your business will reap the benefits.Robert Mening has been interested in technology and the web since he can remember. 10 tips for making it as a successful travel blogger

By Liz on September 27, 2016 in Blogger, Confessions, Get Inspired, How to, This will probably get me hate mail

success blogging

I just realized it's been an awfully long while since I've shared my thoughts with you guys about this crazy weird and wild career that is travel blogging. Yes that's right, Mom. Three years later and I still haven't come home crying a total failure! Winning!

In fact, it's been over a year since I shared with you guys how I make a living and well over two about if you want to be a travel blogger. Shame on me. Time to change that.

Well so many main themes and ideas have stayed the same over the years in the blogging world, like make good shit and never give up, but also a lot has also changed in that time too, especially me.

So I thought I would give a new update, a year or two later on how I've progressed with this travel blogging career after quitting my job 3 and half years ago to blog full time.

success blogging

Nowadays the travel "influencer" industry is getting pretty saturated. I go to events and conferences and don't recognize anyone, and I get daily emails and messages from thirsty bloggers and Instagrammers that range from politely asking me for advice to begging for my entire contact list plus a personal email intro from me. Um, nope.

How do you stand out? How are you going to break in? Let me help you?

But seriously though, guys, I get it. I wish there was one magic formula I could share with you about how to be a successful blogger. But there isn't one. I can only use this space to tell you all what has worked for me in the past and to share what I have learned in over 6 and half years blogging (and three and half years full time).

And to be honest, I don't really know what "making it" actually means. What's the bar? Success means so many different things to so many people. I'll say that my bar for "making it" 3 things – basically I can pitch any place I want to go to and (pretty easily) get it funded, my blog earns me well into six figures, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, I have not moved back into my parents attic. Happiness is being self-employed!

So, I'm gonna break it down for you. Hope you're ready. Here are my 10 best tips for actually making it as a travel blogger.

Travel Blog Success sale is on this week only for 35% off courses.

success blogging

1. Visualize and run your blog as a business

You not going to get far if you do not view your blog as a business. Period.

This means many things. The easiest way to transition is to start referring to it as a business in your head and treat all your choices around it in that capacity. All of my decisions are based around the success and benefit of my blog. I ask myself that question – is this going to help my blog and go from there.

At the end of the day, blog always comes first, and by default that means you guys come first as readers. And sometimes that means saying no to stuff that isn't the right fit, or saying no to a lot of money, which I often end up doing.

Finally, from a business perspective, it's really important to be proactive and to take the initiative with work. I hustle like nobody's business, and that's a major key to my success. You don't get if you don't ask. And don't take no for an answer. Politely.

2. Always try new things and experiment

I think one of the main keys to becoming a successful travel blogger is to always be experimenting and trying new things.

If you want to make it, in my opinion, you have to think long term. The travel industry changes a lot and you have to not only keep up, but also stay ahead of the curve. This applies to everything – from how you create your content to how you run your business. You need to stay on top of trends and changes and also keep trying new things to keep people interested.

For me, I'm always trying new things – maybe because I get bored too easily. From experimenting with video (so much cool stuff coming soon guys) to finding new income streams to changing how I write stories and shoot photos to how I run the blog as a business, and even an exciting new blog redesign coming super soon), I'm always on the lookout out for something different.

success blogging

3. Join Travel Blog Success

Travel Blog Success has been with my on my whole travel blogging journey and helped me get to be where I am today. An online community for travel bloggers, there are two main courses with the membership that walk you through the whole process and teach you how to be a successful travel blogger plus how to improve your travel writing. There are also a few other secondary courses, and all are on sale this week at 35% off.

TBS is the only FB group around travel blogging I participate in (besides my Bootcamp group) and pretty much the only online blogging community I'm in.

If you are eager and proactive and keen to take your blog to the next level and get free tips and get paid to travel like me, now's your chance.

The fall Travel Blog Success sale will end at 11:59pm (EST), Friday, Sept 30.

4. Be unique

I've said this before, and I will say it again. And again. And again until the message finally sinks in. If you want your blog to be successful, it needs to be unique. Let me explain what unique means, because most of the travel influencer industry somehow still doesn't get it. UNIQUE means stop copying everyone else's shit online.

There, I've put it in bold font.

One strategy I use with my blog is to think about an article I want to write, then spend 20 minutes dwelling on it and wondering how I can tell it in a more unique and funny way. Then I write. Same with photography. I arrive at a location, take the photos I normally would, then I try and shoot a lot of creative styled shots to showcase it in a new way. I do NOT travel to a location to recreate other people's Instagram shots.

success blogging

Dear Instagrammers, that means I don't plan my Instagram feed around the most popular travel locations. And while that means I am not as popular as other people, it does mean that my channel is longterm and sustainable.

In fact, while travel photography does inspire me, I often intentionally don't stalk heaps of location photos before traveling in an effort to be able to see it "my way" when I arrive.

I think being unique is really really important in the digital media sphere, but it's really hard. We consume so much information nowadays online, our eyes and our brains are always looking for something better and fresh. I'm in this game for the long haul, which means the only way I will be able to stick around is by being 100 percent myself and being unique.

success blogging

5. Do not work for free

This is pretty easy in theory, especially if you view your blog as a business, but much harder to put into practice.

The travel publishing industry has changed drastically in recent years. In the past, journalists and media would be hosted in a destination usually by a tourism board in exchange for an article somewhere. Nowadays, the lines are blurred with bloggers and "digital influencers" offering much larger marketing-style campaigns in exchange for something for than a free trip, cough cough, dollar dollar bills y'all.

And then there are people who are trying to break into the industry and who often offer everything to the moon and back in exchange for the opportunity to work with someone. Let me tell you, not only is that totally unnecessary, it also undercuts the entire industry. For example, say you really wanted to work for Apple – it is your dream job. Would you say "hey Apple, I'll come and work for you for free and maybe you might hire me in the future?"

Um, no.

success blogging

Brands, especially big brands have marketing budgets. Whether they chose to spend it working with you is up to them (and also up to how convincing you are), but stop being whiny and desperate and saying OMG I will do ANYTHING to work with you, so I'll do it for free.

Why would anyone pay a contractor ever again with that attitude? And where will you be in a year, once you finally have experience and can't find paid work because you just help undermine an entire industry? Oh shit.

More and more frequently nowadays I pitch something and get a reply saying they will work with me if I provide thousands and thousands of dollars worth of additional services (like photography and video licenses) for free.

success blogging

I have been encountering this behavior a lot this past year, and it upsets me. It's not professional, and if you have to be that desperate, it really shows that you aren't a level where you should be pitching anything or working with brands on collaborations. End of story. Wait until you are bigger and can work more professionally. Start small. Work on building your own brand and following and then you will be ready.

I understand. I've been there. I learned my lesson about working for free, the really really hard way. But believing that if you undersell yourself and your business now in the hopes that it will lead to something later on is a often a big mistake and you'll get burned.

While there are always exceptions to the rule, if you want to be a successful blogger and actually earn money with your site, it's a good idea to stick to it.

success blogging

6. Know your exact value

This ties into my last point. If you are going to see your blog as a business, you also need to know your exact value. What do you offer people? Why is it valuable? What are the market rates? What is worth exactly? Why should someone work with you? You should be able to spit professional quick replies in response to all of these without thinking twice.

For example, I have a rate sheet that I send to clients. I know exactly what I charge for all of my services (come to the Travel Bootcamp and I'll share it with you and tell you everything).

Because I believe so much in my work and I know the exact value of everything I offer, as soon as I started to stick to it, my income went through the roof. Now my blog earns far more than I could have ever imagined and I am able to grow and do the projects I had only ever dreamed about. Just by sticking to my guns, saying no, and valuing the work that I produce.

7. Come to the Travel Bootcamp

If you are super keen to take your travel blog to the next level and you're in my part of the world on November 12th, come join me on the Gold Coast in Australia for round two of our Travel Bootcamp. An intensive, one day workshop, Lauren Bath (Australia's first professional Instagrammer), Georgia Rickard (one of Australia's best travel editors and writers) and I will teach you everything we know about how we got to where we are today. Our first Bootcamp was in Sydney this year and it was phenomenal!!

We were fed up with the wishy-washy bullshit fed to us at travel conferences around the world that offered no real, tangible advice about how to exactly make money in the travel industry, so we decided to start our own conference. Our Travel Bootcamp is a no-bullshit approach to making money in travel writing, photography and blogging. Ask us anything.

From sharing our rate sheets to sample pitches to how we negotiate high paying contracts and what to charge for photos, we share all of the hard to find information about this industry with everyone who comes.

We are running a cheeky discount this week for 25% of ticket prices – enjoy! Use the code SUBSCRIBER25 – Come join us!

success blogging

8. Don't worry about what others are doing

What's that quote about comparison is the thief of joy?

Over the years I can directly correlate months where I've been burnt out and unhappy with blogging to months where I've found myself comparing myself to strangers on the internet. It's NOT healthy. Just focus on blogging and doing what you enjoy and sharing what your readers enjoy. Ignore the haters.

And it gets worse the more successful you are. I tend to forget how vicious the internet can be, and other travel bloggers can sometimes be the worst. While so many can be lovely and supportive, there are plenty of "blogger friends" out there who only want something from you and absolutely relish the opportunity to bring you down.

While that well and truly sucks, don't let it keep you from sharing what you think and what you're passionate about. Fuck them.

success blogging

9. Investing in your blog is really important

From the very beginning, I've always invested in my blog where I could. As soon as it's no longer a hobby, that means you might need to spend on it for it to grow and improve, just like with any business. I can never understand when bloggers whine about costs of things. It's a business – if you are earning money with your own small business you will also have expenses. I would LOVE to have a business that required no expenditures. It doesn't work like that.

From having Performance Foundry manage and/or host my blog (and to help me when shit breaks, because it always does) not to mention doing my entire blog redesign, to my web hosting fees, to travel costs, ad costs on social media, camera equipment, and even hiring people to help me run everything, there are always expenses, but they are necessary, especially for long-term goals.

For example, if you want to have your blog reach more people you can become a featured blog with me or work on some other sites to advertise your name. I have a few spots left next month for anyone interested, drop me an email.

Finally, I'll take this opportunity to mention I will be hiring a new assistant soon, and I've gotten lots of emails in the past, so if you're keen, let me know (liz@youngadventuress.com). More on this soon.

success blogging

10. Love what you do

I can't repeat enough how important it is to think long-term with your blog. We don't quit our jobs to travel and to start this lifestyle to become rich. We do it because we love it.

Now more than I ever I always make sure that I love every moment of what I am doing. I don't want to go back to a nine to five job after this. I want this work to lead to more opportunities and to sustain me into the future, and I believe the key to that is being super passionate about it.

Success doesn't matter, happiness is what matters, and I always try to remember that.

Do you have a travel blog? Are you interested in becoming a full time blogger? Have any tips to share?

Laurie Hernandez: I Need to Work on My 'Spaghetti Arms' on 'Dancing With the Stars'

Olympian Laurie Hernandez is blogging exclusively with Us Weekly about her quest to take home the Dancing With the Stars season 23 Mirrorball Trophy! Check back each week for her latest update on the competition.

My schedule has been pretty … interesting! Oh geez, I can't even remember what I did yesterday. We had a tour show Thursday night, and that was in Glendale, Arizona. Then Friday morning I woke up in Arizona, had a dance rehearsal, and then flew to Vegas. Then Val and I had time for a little bit of fun — we went to the iHeartRadio concert!

PHOTOS: 'Dancing With the Stars' Season 23 Cast: See the Celebs and Their Partners in Costume!

Saturday was back to work — I had two gymnastics shows. I've done about four gymnastics shows on this Kellogg's tour so far, and then I do dance rehearsals too. I put them both into their own little categories. We basically just practice dancing whenever we can. We'll find local dance studios in whatever city we're in and just rehearse there.

Val has been traveling with me basically everywhere. Because we have to travel so much together, we're getting closer and getting to know each other e ven more than if I was just going to a dance rehearsal and then leaving afterwards. He's been great to travel with because I can tell he's always looking out for me. He's like a big brother to me! It's really nice.

So this week we're doing the tango. And it's the Face Off, so we're going up against Derek Hough and Marilu Henner. So basically whoever gets the highest score has immunity for the next week, and whoever doesn't goes into jeopardy. So we don't want that!

PHOTOS: Most Disastrous 'Dancing With the Stars' Partners Ever!

I'm not nervous, but that's because I'm not even thinking about it! I'm just trying to perfect our tango and I'm so excited for it. This is definitely a dance that's something that I'm not used to, and it's a step outside my comfort zone. It's really hard to be all serious in the tango and not break into laughter. Tango is way more serious than a jive.

Sometimes Val will crack me up, and sometimes I'll crack him up. It's 50/50. Val tells me I need to work on making sure I don't have spaghetti arms! My frame is always slightly off, so I need to make sure my arms don't get too relaxed and flop around. But I'm working on it.

I'm really looking forward to this week because at the Olympics and in the previous dances that I did, they were very bubbly and they suited me really well. But now the tango's super serious and I don't think anyone's seen that side of me before, so it'll be exciting to see everyone's reaction to it!

I'm also looking forward to what I'll be wearing each week! Seeing what they do with my hair and my face, transforming every week, it's pretty cool! This week I'll be wearing something that's black — and tango-appropriate. But tune in on Monday night to see what my finished look is!
