Why This Analyst Is Raising Twitter Now

Twitter Inc. (NYSE: TWTR) has had a very hard time finding much love from Wall Street. On top of a management void, it has busted its initial public offering (IPO) price, and even after a sharp pullback the stock's valuations remain sky-high. But now we are seeing at least one analyst make a key upgrade in the social media and micro-blogging site.

Twitter was raised to Buy from Neutral at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey. The firm's Robert Peck set the price target at $38.00 in the call. Peck's view is one of cautious optimism.

Driving the upgrade was an attractive valuation and some coming catalysts that could rekindle interest. On valuation, Peck sees more upside than downside at current share prices.

The report noted an announcement that Jack Dorsey is likely to be named as permanent chief executive rather than just the interim CEO. That could come at the end of this week or over Labor Day.

An additional growth driver already on the books is that tweets are set to be integrated into Google search results.

A partnership with DoubleClick, e-commerce initiatives, ads with buy buttons and video ads were all cited as revenue drivers ahead.

As a reminder, Twitter priced its IPO at $26.00 per share in late 2013. Its range was initially $17 to $20, and that range settled in at $23 to $25 before its formal pricing at $26.00.

24/7 Wall St. has tracked several key issues when it comes to Twitter that are worth noting:

  • Twitter needs more workplace diversity.
  • It saw a $30 billion value drop.
  • Twitter could return cash to its shareholders (don't hold your breath).
  • It has a new NFL deal.
  • Jefferies sees big upside.
  • Twitter can fuel stock market hoaxes.
  • And it has expanded shopping pages.
  • Twitter shares were up almost 5% at a high of $28.15 earlier Monday morning, but the shares were seen up 2.7% at $27.55 after almost an hour of trading. Twitter has a consensus price target from analysts of $39.82 and a 52-week range of $21.01 to $55.99.

Twitter shares had traded 9 million shares, versus an average daily volume of about 22.5 million shares. Its market cap is now close to $18.6 billion. In mid-2014, the level between $30 and $33 was support for a brief time, but that lasted only about one month.

While one analyst call may not make a serious sentiment change, it has been noted this morning that SunTrust has been right more often than not on its own Twitter ratings. It still seems as though the market wants to try to figure out how to value Twitter as a stock.

Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Quinn: We will be a finishing team

Use your ← → (arrows) to browse

Following the Atlanta Falcons' 13-9 loss to the Miami Dolphins in the third week of preseason, head coach Dan Quinn made a big letters promise.

"The finish that was the hardest part for us," Quinn said. "But I want you to understand this: we'll be a team that finishes."

Down by four points with 1:36 left in the fourth quarter, the Falcons had the football on the Miami 20-yard line. On third-and-1, Jerome Smith ran for two yards on what seemed like an easy first down pickup. But replays showed he had fumbled, and the ball was recovered by the Dolphins. Miami kneeled out; game over.

The result doesn't matter of the game doesn't matter, but the performances do. Offensively, the Falcons struggled to maintain the high level of performance we saw in the first two preseason contests. The offensive line struggled in pass protection and in run blocking.

"From the offensive side, a little bit inconsistent in terms of protection and the run game," Quinn said. "A penalty threw us back one time, TFL threw us back one time."

Rookie running back Tevin Coleman made his debut, but made just two yards from his four carries. The Falcons' ground game has been problematic all preseason, but how concerning is it?

"Sure, it's a really important part of what we want to do. I wouldn't say concerned is the word, but it's a real emphasis for us in terms of the style and attitude of the way we want to play. For us to win at the end of games, we will have to run and finish it."

RELATED: What we learned from Falcons loss to Dolphins

Defensively, there was much more to smile about. Up against a talented Miami offense, Atlanta allowed just 13 points and were able to generate plenty of pass rush. Eighth overall pick Vic Beasley once again looked good, but it was free agent acquisitions O'Brien Schofield and Adrian Clayborn who stole the show.

"Defensively I thought on third down we made real improvement," Quinn said. "I certainly liked the style I'm seeing from [Adrian] Clayborn again. I think he's got real unique qualities inside.

"I was pleased at the end of the half, Schofield and Clayborn has back-to-back sacks."

The combination of Clayborn and Beasley on the right side gives plenty to be excited about, and the duo have been impressive in preseason. Beasley has star potential and Clayborn looks the real deal rushing the passer.

Preseason wraps up next week, but first the Falcons must deal with a short week before hosting the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night. Quinn thinks the quick turnaround of games will help the team prepare for the challenges of the regular season.

"Honestly I look forward to it. It's another chance for our team to go through a different style. We have the same approach how we go about our business, whether it's a short week, long week, bye week, Thursday night games, Monday night games."

There are plenty of positives to take from Miami, but also plenty the Falcons need to fix before real games begin in two weeks time. For more reaction to the Dolphins loss, stay tuned to Blogging Dirty.

Saturday Morning Garden Blogging: Seeds Come Full Circle

April to August - we come 'round full circle with the final days of August - I'm usually out collecting seeds from the garden to either dry them and put them away for next year, give some to friends (haven't forgotten you, jayden and FindingMyVoice!), or scatter them where I want them to start next April. There's almost as much beauty in some seed heads as there is in the flower that preceded it. I try to keep a sharp eye out, because if you are too late, some seed heads dry and pop open before I'm prepared to gather them.  Then I get little colonies of plants where I don't really want them (johnny jump-ups, I'm talking to you!)  Johnny Jump-ups

For more seedy neighborhood stuff, jump down below the seed-pod with me....

I actually asked my friend Nancy if I could dig up some of her jump-ups a few years ago - I love them so! She made a face, and said, "You'll have them everywhere!" And she was right, they ARE everywhere, but I don't really mind. Even when they become almost as pesky in the raised bed garden as the baby elms I have to weed out every year (and a few always manage to hide out until fall, when I get the bed ready for winter). At least they are much more cheerful than the Siberian elms!

I have been a seed collector for many years. Some years I'll save the seeds from an heirloom tomato that was just so luscious, and other years I'll just scatter the annual and perennial flower seeds out with a flick of the fingers so they re-seed and grow again in the garden. Usually in August and September, I'll take the scissors or clippers and a container of some kind with me as I wander the gardens, and clip off the seeds I want to start again next year.  It's a tiny window from flower to full burst of seed pod. You can't be too early, nor too late. If the seed pod is green, the seed is not quite fully formed. If you get there too late, the seed pod has dried and burst open, scattering the seeds willy-nilly into your back patio, to be gathered diligently by the many species of ants and eaten by birds. This year I'm following the heirloom climbing petunias around as they go to seed.  Petunia seed head

I love their little birds beak seed pods. I've already got quite a few drying out.

I only buy seeds from the heirloom, non-GMO companies and then they re-seed readily.  I've gotten a few hybrid plants from nurseries, or (shudder) even Lowe's, but they don't last long and definitely aren't able to reproduce.  It's also fun to see what plants may have stealthily gone to seed without my noticing. I think most seeds will find their best spot, and most of the time I will let the resulting plants grow wherever they landed.

Some seed pods are so beautiful! My favorite is the little prolific jump-up, but they go to seed so fast that I can't catch a photo of them. They have a little four-plex pane, like a pinwheel, full of little tiny seeds.  I also love the dill seed head, it's so artistic. This year I've got a few in my raised bed, keeping the black-seeded Simpson lettuce company. (Yes, I let some go to seed, and I'll have lettuce again in April! Imagine that...).  The dill seed heads have such a symmetry about them.

    Dill seed

In my area, we also pay close attention to the native Gambel Oak seeds, aka acorns. It can be very iffy for the acorns and they are a large part of the food source for black bears, as well as many other native wildlife. Gambel oak acorns can make or break a bear population; in other words, will there be four bears in my neighborhood trying to break into my trash can this fall, or only one???

This year looks pretty good from an anecdotal point of view:

    Gamble Oak acorns

I've got a few plants that have pretty flowers right before they go to seed, and the arugula was a nice surprise this year. It looks so much like a Colorado noxious weed flower, chicory, that I had to look twice. No, really, it's just the arugula...

    Arugula flower

And, before I release you to get out there to your seed pods, I've got one more favorite to share. The newcomer to my garden, the ever-prolific "spider flower", or cleome.  I'll never get rid of these, I'm predicting.Cleome

My garden is slowly going to seed. What's going on in your garden?

Vintage Oklahoma: an executioner, meticulous and proud

"Nobody I electrocuted ever held it against me, at least not beforehands. And I've electrocuted some pretty close friends of mine."

The line is from a February 1948 Oklahoman profile so brutally honest about death in the pen it's at times hard to read. In the piece, Oklahoman writer Ray Parr profiled Rich Owens, a "67-year-old executioner, who built Oklahoma's first electric chair in 1915 and watched over it with jealous care."

Owens was bedridden and dying of liver cancer at the time of the interview.

Reporter Graham Brewer first resurrected the article, blogging about it last year. Thursday, business editor Don Mecoy rediscovered it in his ongoing effort to retweet interesting stories from The Oklahoman archives. I just gave it another read.

In vivid prose, the writer lets Owens unapologetically recount career highlights electrocuting the accused and bristles when asked about a botched hanging.

"Well, it is a pleasure to kill some of these dirty so-and-so's. Just think what they have done to people. I never give 'em a thought afterwards. It's just a job of work."

Check out the article below. Just zoom in to read after you pull up the pdf:

The 4 Step Guide To Blogging As a Business

Blogging can be hard. Especially for a business that has numerous other channels to cater – sales, user-experience marketing, etc. However, blogging for businesses is still most traffic-boosting and lead-generating content delivery platform.

Here are 5 facts to prove the point of having a blog:

Okay, so now you have some valid reasons why you need to create a blog for your business. Let's get into the practicalities in this 4 step guide to blogging as a business!

Step 1: Your Blog Needs Ideas

Inspiration is a fussy thing. You can't always rely on it. Blogging as a business demands consistency, thus a proven strategy to generate winning content ideas all the time.

First of all, identify the type and amount of posts you'll be publishing on your blog – list posts, round-ups, expert interview, how-tos, guides, general business updates. Got the numbers? Now start brainstorming ideas. Here are some tips to help you:

  • Browse through forums/Q&A sites. Check out what questions people have in your niche. What's their biggest struggle? Help them to solve it in the next post.
  • Check out online groups as well. Facebook, LinkedIn, and G+ communities can be a valuable source of insights about your users and their needs.
  • Use feedly to keep an eye on the top headlines in your industry. What are big publishers talking about? What's your competitors posting? How can you upgrade their ideas with even more value?
  • Competitor's FAQ section: how can you help their users?
  • Relevant courses on SkillShare – those always have a short course plan section. Grab one of the subheadings and use it as your next blog topic. The thing is, if people are ready to pay money for this; it should be something they are really interested in after all.
  • There are numerous ways to generate great content ideas. Just always keep your Evernote close to write them down, once you have this "aha" moment.

Step 2: Create a blogging calendar

Your business needs a blogging calendar if you really want to get results for your efforts. A Google Spreadsheet will do for a start. Here's the essential information that should be in it:

  • General idea
  • Suggested titles
  • Target audience
  • Keywords
  • Blog category
  • Author
  • Editor (if any)
  • Relevant links
  • Relevant visuals
  • Call to action
  • Draft date
  • Post date
  • On top, make sure you've created a standard content promotion checklist to draw relevant eyeballs once your post's published.

Step 3: Start Crafting the Content

The truth is – consumers no longer want just any words. They want helpful, witty, engaging, practical and educational pieces they can actually make use of.

So you already have one element of a killer content – a relevant topic. Now spice it up with the rest – magnetic title; short and sweet introduction to hook 'em up; short clear paragraphs; a simple, step-by-step outline of your idea; a few relevant keywords in the subheadings and nice visuals to grab their attention even more.

Here's a winning content formula for any blog:

  • Tell your readers what you are going to talk about
  • Tell them why it is helpful to them
  • Tell your idea (in a step-by-step form)
  • Sum up all the key points
  • Step 4: Optimize your blog

To get the biggest bang out of your content efforts, you'll need to do a lot of testing till you work out the ultimate formula for the posts your readers love.

Considering you are not an A/B testing ninja, let's focus on the two main quick fixes you can do today:

    Headlines

There are numerous headline formulas that work, try implementing a few of them on similar types of posts and see which perform best on social media. Additionally, take advantage of Portent Title Maker to update the existing titles.

Another simple way to test CTA rates of different headlines is to test do A/B testing for your email campaign.  Compare the numbers of the same campaign with different email subject lines and Call to actions to see what sounds really compelling to your users.

    Call to Actions

Your blog doesn't pay your bills, but your revenue does. That's why Call to Actions are essential for any online business.

To craft the ultimate CTA you need to identify your goal first:

  • Grow Subscribers List
  • Lead Generation
  • More Social Shares
  • Clicks to Product Pages
  • Sales
  • Select one goal for each post to get the best results. Next, test your CTAs placement – header, in-line, sidebar, or footer.  Additionally, check out this guide on landing pages optimization for more valuable insights.

Now you are all set up. It's time to get to business blogging!

    Finally, Someone Explains Snapchat

What is Snapchat? Why would anyone use it? These are questions that many of us, old and young, likely have. Now, we have some answers.

The third installment of The Skin Deep's Senior Orientation video series is perhaps the most helpful yet. You see, it's about Snapchat, the wildly popular social-media platform that's confusing to plenty of people well below retirement age, let alone senior citizens. Cisco, the Snapchat-savvy youngster tasked with explaining the photo- and video-sharing service to a group of Queens oldsters (and to us), makes the case for why you'd want to send a photo to someone, even though, per Snapchat's rules, the picture will disappear in just 10 seconds.

Of course, the conversation eventually leads to Snapchat's sexier uses, specifically the sending of "risqué" photos. These savvy seniors aren't scandalized by the notion, they're just a bit amazed at how far technology has come since they were that age where they might have wanted to send such a picture to a crush. By the end of the video, the Snapchat students don't exactly seem like they're going to rush out and download the app for themselves, but certainly some bridge of understanding has been built. Hopefully, at least, the next time their grandkids are yammering on about some kind of Snapchat drama, these Queens elders will know exactly what the kids are talking about—which is certainly more than a lot of people can say.

A look at recent politically tainted trials in Russia

A security officer walks past the portraits of Oleg Sentsov and other political prisoners in front of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Kiev, Ukraine, Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2105. A Russian court convicted a prominent Ukrainian filmmaker on Tuesday of conspiring to commit terror attacks and sentenced him to 20 years in prison. The court in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don said Oleg Sentsov had set up a terror cell in the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed last year, and was plotting attacks. He will serve time in a maximum-security prison. (AP Photo/Efrem Lukatsky)

MOSCOW (AP) â€" The guilty verdict Tuesday for Crimean filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, who was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in a Russian maximum-security prison for an alleged terror conspiracy, follows a plethora of recent Russian trials that are widely seen as warnings to society not to question its Kremlin rulers.

Here's a look at some other prominent cases in Russia that critics have called show trials:

    ALLEGEDLY STEALING TIMBER

Anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny has had problems with Russian authorities after he started blogging about corruption at Russia's biggest state-owned companies. His legal problems multiplied as he spearheaded the anti-government, anti-Vladimir Putin protest movement in 2011. In his first trial in 2013, Navalny was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison for defrauding a struggling timber company in the Kirov region, where Navalny used to work as an adviser to the governor. The damage that prosecutors cla imed amounted to the company's entire annual production, suggesting that Navalny stole everything it had.

Hours after Navalny was taken in custody, several thousand people took to the streets in Moscow to protest the verdict. Navalny was released on a suspended sentence the following day.

Navalny was then tried along with his brother, a former postal executive, and convicted of defrauding a French cosmetics company by offering "a disadvantageous contract." The head of the French company left Russia soon after filing the complaint against Navalny, and the company insisted at the trial there was nothing criminal about that contract.

On Dec. 30, 2014, Navalny was given a suspended sentence of 3½ years while his brother, a father of two small children, was sent to prison, which was widely seen as retribution by the Kremlin and a signal that the families of government opponents were no longer safe.

    PUSSY RIOT CHURCH PROTEST

In perhaps the most colorful tr ial of recent years, three female musicians in their 20s were convicted of hooliganism "motivated by religious hatred" and sent to prison.

The Pussy Riot punk collective â€" Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich â€" had staged several daring art performances before they went to Moscow's main cathedral in February 2012 to stage a "punk prayer," pleading to the Virgin Mary "to rid Russia from Putin" â€" just weeks before his re-election as president. They were sentenced to three years in prison, though Samutsevich was released on suspended sentence a few months later.

Prosecutors insisted that Pussy Riot trampled upon religious beliefs of millions of Russians. The women said their protest was to raise concern about increasingly close ties between the state and the church in Russia. Tolokonnikova and Alekhina spent nearly two years in prison before they were granted amnesty on the eve of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

    TAX EV ASION POSTHUMOUS TRIAL

Russian tax lawyer Sergei Magnitsky was convicted of tax evasion in 2013, four years after his death.

An investigation by Russia's presidential council on human rights concluded he was severely beaten and denied medical treatment for pancreatitis during the 11 months he was held in prison awaiting trial. Prison doctor Dmitry Kratov, the only person to face trial in the case, was acquitted.

To deflect the blame for his treatment and his lengthy pre-trial detention, law enforcement officials re-opened the investigation in order to portray Magnitsky as a dangerous criminal. After a speedy probe, the case was sent to court, where proceedings went on for months with the defendant's metal cage standing empty.

In July 2013, Magnitsky was convicted and sentenced to nine years in jail. Amnesty International called the prosecution â€" Russia's first posthumous trial â€" "deeply sinister."

    ARCTIC 30 GREENPEACE PROTEST

It star ted as a typical Greenpeace protest. The environmental group's Arctic Sunrise ship sailed in September 2013 to the Russian section of the Kara Sea to protest an offshore Russian drilling rig in the Arctic. Days later, Russian border guards in balaclavas boarded the ship and arrested everyone on board. Instead of being fined, the activists were charged with piracy, a grave crime carrying a lengthy prison sentence.

Thirty activists from across the world including a news photographer were kept in provincial jails before the charges against them were changed to hooliganism and they were transferred to St. Petersburg for a trial. Less than two months before Russia was to host the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, the entire crew received a presidential pardon and all were released after 100 days in detention.

    SQUARE PROTEST

Thirty-three people were charged with rioting or inciting riots in May 2012 on Moscow's Bolotnaya Square on the eve of Putin's inauguration to a third ter m as president. Twenty people were sentenced to prison terms of up to 4½ years. One had his sentence commuted, another was sent for psychiatric treatment, while 13 others were granted amnesty. Several defendants remain under house arrest.

The defendants included political activists, army officers, students and pensioners. Prosecutors claimed that the riots were masterminded by a Georgian politician and perpetrated by a group of hard-line political activists. Those who went to the May 6 protest testified that it was a peaceful gathering until riot police moved in. Some of those charged with disobeying police orders said they were trying to protect others who were being beaten. In the most bizarre evidence in court, one protester was accused of throwing a lemon at a policeman, while another officer suffered "dental enamel damage."

The scope of the trial, the diversity of the defendants and the fact that investigators are still searching for rioters suggests the Kremlin meant to make an example out of it.

My School System Really Doesn’t Get What the Establishment Clause Means

A few weeks ago I finally wrote out a little bit of the story of how and when I decided to start writing about my departure from the Christian faith, along with the consequences I encountered for doing so. I started blogging two weeks after that saga culminated in the loss of a teaching job, but I waited two years to write about it because to my mind it was more important to talk about other things first. Also, all four of my daughters attend that same school district and I didn't want to stir up trouble that would make life harder for them.

(Read "The Sequel to God's Not Dead Happened in My Classroom, But in Reverse")

isrealThe official story is that the Rankin County School District had to "let me go" for as yet unstated reasons which had nothing—nothing at all, you hear?—to do with the fact that my principal discovered I was a closeted atheist. My mid-semester removal from my history class and subsequent reassignment to a math class was totally unrelated to the day my principal confronted me about my atheism, listing for me several topics I was to avoid because, and I quote, "There's talk in the community that you told your students you're an atheist." That wasn't the case, by the way. When my students asked me that question, I changed the subject, which was all the answer they needed. But surely that had nothing to do with this, right?

The demonstrative religiosity of the RCSD administrators also had nothing to do with the fact that, at the middle school where I taught, four local youth ministers were allowed free rein to mix and mingle among the students in the cafeteria for two hours every single Wednesday as if they were a part of the staff.  Never mind that none of them had any children of their own, or that even parents aren't allowed such unfettered access to all the children in the school. The fact that they were from the same church where the majority of the administrators, teachers, and students attend had nothing to do with this. Of course.

The RCSD's religious preference likewise had nothing to do with the mandatory religious assembly they held the very same week I was told I wasn't coming back. All those students from the aforementioned church giving their Christian testimonies had nothing to do with religion, and surely the American Humanist Association was out of bounds for forcing them to honor the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. It didn't make any difference that the AHA chose not to take them to court in exchange for a promise not to break the law again, nor should religious privilege be blamed for the Christian prayer that inaugurated the awards ceremony later in the year at Brandon High School, causing RCSD to finally cough up a fine for breaking the law yet again.

And each time when my girls received awards at the school board meetings for scoring perfect scores on state testing (yes, I'm bragging), when those meetings started off with the superintendent asking a student to pray?  Totally not motivated by religion. Not at all.

    Thou Great Art How?

So of course religion had nothing at all to do with the decision made by the Brandon High School band director to spend all summer perfecting their rendition of the much beloved Christian hymn "How Great Thou Art" to perform at halftime shows this fall. And when the RCSD school board finally announced this past weekend that the band would not only not be playing that hymn for fear of incurring a fine, but would furthermore be choosing not to perform at all in protest, religion had nothing at all to do with that decision, either.  Locals protested that the hymn was rewritten from a traditional Swedish folk tune, you see. Surely it was the school's love of Scandanavian musical theory which motivated their choice.

Likewise when the community responded with outrage and chose to lead a totally spontaneous and harmonious rendition of the beloved hymn itself, singing the words from memory, it became obvious that religion has nothing at all to do with this controversy. I just can't even imagine why those mean godless humanists can't respect these people's right to enjoy Swedish folk music.

I'm sure that if representatives of the nearby Hindu temple just a few minutes from the school wanted to lead the crowd in one of their traditional tunes, or if the band director had somehow chosen an arrangement of the Muslim call to prayer into their halftime show, the community would have been just as supportive of that decision as they would have been about the other one, right?

And it's also completely coincidental that the band had learned to form into the shape of a giant cross at a key point during the performance.

Because religion has nothing at all to do with any of this, of course.

    Persecution Complex Intensifies

Hopefully by now you've picked up on the intended sarcasm. And incidentally I almost didn't write about this story both because Hemant over at The Friendly Atheist already covered this story very well, and because I'm tied up lately with traveling hither and yon (Pacific Northwest this weekend) gearing up to take a more active role in organizing groups for Recovering from Religion (more on how to help with that coming soon).

But after FOX News's chief persecution crier Todd Starnes gave his own predictable spin to the story yesterday morning, my laptop practically opened itself and stood up in front of me, goading me to write a response to this ridiculous refrain.  Starnes characteristically hyperbolizes:

There was no halftime show under the Friday night lights at Mississippi's Brandon High School — the marching band had been benched…The band was ordered off the field…

As if that were really how it went down. They were ordered off the field?  By whom?  You know, there comes a point at which a correspondent knows exactly what he is doing, and he knows he is misrepresenting the facts, but he just doesn't care. It achieves the desired visceral reaction from his audience, and the clicks and views roll in. Good for him. Make that green, Starnes. It is a business, after all. Incidentally, in case you wondered where commentators like him find their fan base, he gives a clue when he says:

Word about the band getting benched spread across the town quicker than kudzu. I must have received emails and Facebook messages from nearly the entire state.

Well, that answers that question.  Starnes then waxes dramatic as he tells the tale of courageous Mississippians standing up to the Constitution with its meddlesome Establishment Clause, singing their hearts out in proclamation of their right to show their devotion to the same religion to which 83% of all Mississippians belong.

"This is the kind of thing that makes me proud to be from the South," Miss Mandy told me. "We are getting tired of being told to sit down and shut up. People are ready to fight back."

Miss Mandy is absolutely right. The time has come to stand up to the secularists.

The time has come to put an end to their cultural jihad.

Jihad. Nice. It amazes me that anybody takes this kind of talk seriously. But they do. People where I live seriously believe his version of stories like this, as the eardrum piercing video above demonstrates. Southerners love their religion, and nothing short of unrivaled privilege will satisfy their insecurities about their religion's ability to survive the growing onslaught of…uh…people not caring as much about the same things they care about.

If you believe your religion requires legal favoritism in order to survive, maybe you aren't completely convinced it's miraculous after all.

    — Neil Carter (@godlessindixie) July 3, 2015

I could just as easily substitute "thrive" for "survive." Either way, one wonders how much they trust in divine intervention after all?

Religious freedom does NOT mean you always get your way.  And loss of privilege does not equal persecution.

I've come to the realization that I cannot make my community understand these principles.  That has been a hard lesson to learn. As a lifelong educator I always like to think that if I explain an idea articulately enough, people will get it.  But unfortunately that's not the case. People are not entirely rational beings, and far too often their own emotions and loyalties prevent them from seeing things objectively. People are also tribal and nobody likes giving up privilege or power. Consequently, it occurs to me that legal battles like the ones mentioned above have to happen because literally nothing else is working. You cannot talk people out of discriminatory behavior. You have to invoke the law or large groups of people will always run over smaller groups of people. That's just the way it works.

Saturday Morning Garden Blogging: Harbingers of Fall

Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower. ― Albert Camus

Good morning, gardeners! Here on the High Plains, fall is in the air. Autumn has come earlier here this year, it seems, maybe because of the El Nino? We've also had great rainfall this summer, and everything is green and lush out on the prairie (all this moisture doesn't bode well for winter, though!).  Temperatures at night have dropped into the 60's and the flocks of grackles and starlings and blackbirds are gathering in huge groups as they get ready for the migration to the south. This is always the sign that autumn is coming out here. Out over the fields of corn and milo and sunflowers, the "murmurations" (the movement of the flock as one being) are quite disorganized as the younger birds have to learn how to follow the flock and often get left behind in the flock's sudden turns and dives. It really is incredible to watch! photo murmuration_zpsw6dzmmdp.jpg

Let's jump below the tangled garden hose for what's happening in the garden!

     photo IMG_20150820_073955_130_zpsr33e79sh.jpg

I had a good year with the front planters, although I'm still waiting for some of the dahlias to bloom. The grasshoppers left most of the plants in the front alone, fortunately, so I did manage to get some decent blooms!

     photo DSCF1391_zpswfovged1.jpg

And I've been dying to show off my dahlias! My current favorites are my two dinner plate dahlias, the Purple Pearl (the dark maroon) and Gitt's Perfection: photo IMG_20150814_174134_856_zpsjask8chf.jpg

This purple and white one, which has smaller blooms, is quite prolific with several blooms open at the same time. It was a surprise, since I didn't order it, but it's quite beautiful:

So that's what's going on in my garden, is anyone else feeling the nips of fall yet?
