Leverage Your Blogging for More Money Making Opportunities

There's more than one way to skin a cat and in the online world of entrepreneurship and marketing, you don't want to be a one-trick pony. Animal-related idioms aside, it is absolutely true that you don't want to spread yourself too thin. At the same time, you also don't want to put all your eggs in one basket. Adhere to the Pareto principle, but be smart about it.

In this way, you might start your online journey with a blog of your own, covering whatever topic or industry that happens to spark your interest. And yes, there are a myriad of ways you can monetize that blog, from banner ads to affiliate links, but it also pays to leverage your growing brand to expand it into other money making opportunities. Here are a few to consider; just don't try to do all of them at once.

Run a Workshop

Have you established yourself as an expert in your field? Do you have an engaged audience who is interested in learning more (and are willing to pay for it)? A great way to rake in some serious cash is by running a workshop, either online or offline. An online webinar may be easier in attracting attendees from all around the world, but an offline seminar might lend a little more legitimacy to your brand.

Paid Speaking Engagements

By now, you've likely noticed that John spends a fair bit of time on the road attending various conferences, masterminds and other related industry events. I imagine some of these might be on his own dime, but many more could be paid speaking engagements too. When you become a legitimate name in your industry, people will pay to have you headline their events.

Consulting and Coaching

Even if you don't quite get to that level, after your garnered up a good amount of experience in your field, relative beginners and novices will turn to you for advice and guidance. On some level, you may "pay it forward" by offering some insight for free, but you could just as easily charge for your consulting and coaching services. This can be very easy and very accessible, especially if you host your sessions through a platform like Skype.

Sell a Product

By and large, with some obvious exceptions, your blog is free to your readers. It doesn't cost them anything to read your content unless you set aside a section of premium content. Or maybe you have a Patreon. Those aside, you can still make money from your readers when you have a supplementary product available for purchase. This could be an ebook, a physical printed book, an online course, a video series… it's totally up to you.

Influencer Marketing

More and more, we're seeing the tremendous impact that social media has had and continues to have on the Internet. And more and more, advertisers are recognizing the power of partnering not only with the "big" names in the industry, but also with what are being called "micro influencers." If you've got a few thousand or even a few hundred followers, you might be able to cash in with some sponsored social media content or brand ambassadorships. There are networks for this, as well as the opportunity to partner with brands on a one-to-one basis. Vlogging can open up opportunities too.

Event Organization

Not getting invited to speaking engagements? Don't want to take on the burden of running an entire workshop all by yourself? A great way to further extend your brand and influence is by organizing relevant events for people who are interested in the same niche and industry as you. This could be as bold and as ambitious as a full-on conference or it can be as simple and straightforward as a meetup or networking event. You know the Dot Com Lunch John hosts in Orange County? Remember Dot Com Pho in Vancouver? These can forge some incredible business relationships and, depending on the kind of event you host, you may even charge for tickets!

Freelance Services

On some level, this is the path that I took, except I started freelancing and blogging professionally around the same time. When people respect and admire you for the work you do on your blog, there's a good chance that some of them will pay you to offer similar services to them too. This can be writing and editing, as in my case, or it could be photography, graphic design, web development, app development, social media management or any number of other opportunities.

How are you making money online outside of blogging? Are you building your brand?

A few notes on daily blogging

I've been wanting to write about the habit of daily blogging I've taken up since Oct. 1st this year, but I've avoided it, because 1) there are so many other interesting things to blog about 2) I've worried that blogging about blogging is too recursive and it will open up some sort of evil dimension or will just jinx the good mojo I got workin'. Still, I want to give it a (hopefully quick) spin.

The idea started out from my anxiety about "stock and flow." As Robin Sloan wrote seven years ago: flow is the feed ("It's the posts and the tweets. It's the stream of daily and sub-daily updates that reminds people you exist.") and stock is the durable stuff ("It's the content you produce that's as interesting in two months (or two years) as it is today. It's what people discover via search. It's what spreads slowly but surely, building fans over time.")

In Show Your Work!, I wrote that it was always my M.O. to turn flow into stock: tweets become blog posts that become book chapters that become books. Trouble is, I had failed to heed Robin's warning:

I feel like flow is ascendant these days, for obvious reasons—but we neglect stock at our own peril. I mean that both in terms of the health of an audience and, like, the health of a soul. Flow is a treadmill, and you can't spend all of your time running on the treadmill. Well, you can. But then one day you'll get off and look around and go: oh man. I've got nothing here.

Not only was I not turning flow into stock, I became acutely aware that due to the slow (or fast?) decay of social media and algorithm tinkering, the flow wasn't even doing what it used to do —"remind people you exist"—  and worse, my bits were just getting sucked into a void, an archive that I could download, maybe, but probably never go back and mine for any gold. Turning flow into stock isn't all that hard, but it gets exponentially harder the more flow you have to go back and sift through.

Also, quite frankly, Twitter turned into a cesspool almost overnight. My friend Alan Jacobs was very vocal about his split from Twitter, and after reading his vibrant blog and new book, How To Think, I just decided to give daily blogging a go again, and this time, to do it on my URL, on my old-school WordPress blog, like the old days, when blogging actually meant something to me.

So how'd it go? Well, so far, even better than I expected.

1) I had no idea how badly my writing muscles had atrophied. After a couple of weeks, I could feel the sentences coming easier.

2) After struggling to come up with a new book idea for so long, I could start to see all the connections between posts, the patterns, the idea planets I keep orbiting. Because it's all in one place, hyperlinked together, I can see my own obsessions in a way that is much harder elsewhere. (Also: I'm owning my turf. This place has been around for a dozen years. Longer than Twitter and Tumblr and Instagram, and if I had to bet, I'd guess it will outlast them.)

3) I had forgotten how wonderful blogging is as a mode of thinking. Blogging is, for me, more about discovering what I have to say, and tweeting more about having a thought, then saying it the right way. It's also great to be able to go as long or as short as you want to go.

4) Maybe most surprising, is that my posts have gotten, in my opinion, much deeper and more interesting. I used to scramble on Thursdays, trying to come up with a good blog post so I could post it at the top of Friday's newsletter. Often I would cop out, write something quick and pat, and move on. Once I started daily blogging, not only did I have more to link to, it's actually better stuff — some weeks I have a tough time deciding which post gets top billing in my list of 10. (I hope you'll subscribe, btw, if you haven't already.)

There's a story about perfectionism in David Bayles and Ted Orland's excellent book, Art & Fear:

The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups. All those on the left side of the studio, he said, would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced, all those on the right solely on its quality. His procedure was simple: on the final day of class he would bring in his bathroom scales and weigh the work of the "quantity" group: fifty pound of pots rated an "A", forty pounds a "B", and so on. Those being graded on "quality", however, needed to produce only one pot — albeit a perfect one — to get an "A". Well, came grading time and a curious fact emerged: the works of highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity. It seems that while the "quantity" group was busily churning out piles of work – and learning from their mistakes — the "quality" group had sat theorizing about perfection, and in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories a nd a pile of dead clay.

With blogging, I'm not so sure it's about quantity as much as it's about frequency: for me, there's something kind of magical about posting once a day. Good things happen. Something small every day leads to something big. (Seth Godin has championed daily blogging for years—he just passed his 7000th post.)

5) Maybe I'm weird, but it just feels good. It feels good to reclaim my turf. It feels good to have a spot to think out loud in public where people aren't spitting and shitting all over the place.

Anyways, I hope I can keep it up for as long as possible. Thanks for reading.

How to start blogging in 2017?

Blogging has been the new way to make you feel that you can be passionate about. A blog and nice content means someone is really well nice with flow of information about the field. So, you also want to start blogging and share stuff with the world and know the benefit? Then you have come to the right place.

Blogging in 2017 is still not late. You can get started in minutes and up and running. Likewise other field, blogging also requires something that can turn into profitable and income oriented no less than an ordinary job. Also, you can put this as your side job.

So, you are excited to know and learn about the blogging today and start right now? Whoa, hold on. In this article, i will explain you why blogging, and what things you require for blogging and what you can make out of it.

I started blogging back in the 2012 not knowingly what blog actually was because i loved to write. Back then i loved to write about various subject and share with friends. In this years i have learnt a lot about blogging and will share the information with you.

Before starting how to blog thing, why don't we learn what possible advantages can the blogging make out of it? Here's are some of them.

1.Online identity:

Blogging will be your new online identity if you constantly become active in the blogging world. The more the content you write about, the more active you become to blogging world and the more belongingness you can feel. People are constantly looking for the new content, unique ideas and they will ultimately identify the pitchers, creators of the content thus by giving you a new identity.

2.Communication:

While blogging unique contents in the internet, blogging has also become the way to engage with people. Even the most blogger who constantly blog also agree with this fact because they can engage with targeted people and communicate with them, sell products and services.

3.Express yourself:

A lot of blogger start with the concept of blogging something they like. Exactly this is true, because blogging gives you the way to express yourself and share the things or subject you have interest in.

4.Monetization:

You can make money while blogging. If you can really provide uniqueness in your content then people will start looking for you and ultimately make money out of blog.

So, much advantages of blogging, but where do we start. Well, in the following points, we will know what things are requires for blogging to start.

Basic steps on how to start blog.

1.Content subject

2.Blogging platform

3.Custom domain and hosting

4.Blog design

5.Start writing unique content

Without making late, i will make you clear about these steps.

1.Content subject:

At first make sure yourself what you will be blogging about. Most people start blogging out of their passion. Its OK although you need to make sure of yourself the area of writing you will be blogging about. This can make you gain focus on the subject you will write and engage with the audience and generate niche contents.

Some of the specific areas for blogging might be:

i.Your business or products involved materials

You can actually blog about your business and promote your products via blogging. This will make you interact and engage more with audience that you are trying to target. For more, why small business needs blog or website, i have written a blog post, check here.

ii.Personal interest of matter

Blogging can not only be some official products or things in the internet. You can start blogging for things you like. For example someone likes to post literature stuff, then blogging will definitely help them. It is not always money or economical things blogging cares about but also feeling that people want to expose, share what events happened and what other people can learn about.

iii.Your working subject

Some people would like to start blogging on things hey work. For example, programmers, developers might blog the current working trends they are seeing and can share user experience to the fellow workers or friends. Blogging never ceases to amaze people!

2.Blogging Platform

Blogging platform is one of the definite option to think about. What platform will suite you most? Ultimately we have winner here, Wordpress. Wordpress is amazing CMS, that allows user to configure hassle free settings to make things running in few minutes. However this doesn't means other platform are not useful. The following statistics will provide some data for comparison

If you are unsure about how to set things with the platform here are some suggestion,

a. Wordpress

The most popular CMS platform. For this you will need to have a hosting platform.

b. Blogger

Easy but limited platform. It is provided by Google.

c. Tumblr

Half blogging plus half social network platform.

Make sure on checking further blogger post. I will be posting on how to choose blogging platform.

3. Choose Domain Name and Hosting

Serving your content will make more robust and authentic if you are using custom domain. Most people argue that owning custom domain will be more helpful but this case is only applicable if you select proper one. Try choosing .com domain extension it will help generating more traffic as it is considered as neutral tlds. Choose hosting platform depending upon the location and your needs. Select your local hosting platform for more services as they can be dealt directly if any problem arises in comparison to the international hosting which can be both tiresome for payment and the troubleshooting. If you are in applicable location to deal with foreign currency easier (say dollars) then goto hosting like Bluehost, hostgator as they provide easy hosting solution with free domain name. Relatively in addition to hosting purchase, it is easier to setup basic functionalities such as domain name pointing, DNS managing etc. If you purchase domain and both wordpress in one place, you can dire ctly install wordpress and go further step.

4.Blog Design

After you have purchased domain name and managed hosting solution for your blog, now it is time design blog. Designing blog is easy approach as it is some hours work. Design blog in such a way that the homepage should attract people not only with content but also with design. A nice and finished design is always a plus point than some ugly design. Label your pages, tags properly. Make about and contact pages properly and add nice commenting as well as sharing features. Add email collecting system or more common subscribing features that asks visitor to enter email address after certain moment they visit on the page or article. Add some social media follow button so that it reflects your socialization more clearly. Any other design are optional regarding the type of your blog.

5.Content

Now once we have everything right to be fired up, it's time to write some clear concept articles on particular subject as per your interest. You can always enhance the subject matter by planning the keywords what people are searching to make more enhanceable. Write long text article because it provides more concept and fact. Always search for the latest data and give references if you have copied something from other location such as images or text portion. Insert contextual images for the blog. You can find copyright free image to put in blog for this purpose.

Give proper tags and label. Title and links should be carefully planned because they are very helpful when searched in search engine such as Google.

Once these steps are done, publish the post. Now they should look cheesy! After publication of some posts, share them in social media and engage with fans, followers, friends. Recommend your friends, fans to visit your blog and ask to give feedback.

After setting up blog, once you realize the basics of blogging, you can sign up for other services such as Google adsense for monetizing, webmaster for indexing your contents to search engine and Google analytics for your blog analytics.

Well that's all for today. Hope it will help for you. I will be posting related articles about blogging in coming post. Stay updated or subscribe us. Cheers. :) Happy Blogging!

More Common Blogging Mistakes You Could Be Making

When starting a blog, you have to be very careful today because there is no shortage of other relevant blogs your visitor can turn to. Mistakes made during content writing and blog setup can be very costly because once a visitor leaves your domain, it will be very hard to get them back, especially when they had an initial bad experience. This is why I recommend doing your research before getting started so you can be careful what strategy you implement into your blog. I've made it a point to research common blogging mistakes every 2 months to ensure I'm following the fundamentals and what other experts are saying about the common blogging mistakes being made. Some bloggers have made it their initiative to do nothing but perform case studies, trying to find creative ways to either do something or avoid the common mistakes.

Today, I'd like to take some more time out to go over some other common blogging mistakes that you have to be careful about when setting up a blog or on your existing blog.

No Contact Email

The worst mistake you can make is NOT providing a way for people to get a hold of you. It adds credibility to your blog and you are genuinely trying to help people out, which is why you should always provide an email address. However, you have several ways this can be done and I encourage everyone to install a WordPress plugin that will set the entire form up for you. This form will obviously be placed on your contact page, but keep these things in mind as well.

A contact form is a great way to:

  • Get user feedback
  • Get content ideas
  • Business opportunities
  • Earn credibility
  • Don't worry about people sending spam because email contact forms have evolved so much, you have "captcha" technology to protect you going forward.

    Not Responding to Comments

This is a quick way to destroy your user loyalty because it's always great to know the owner of the blog cares about your opinion. Let me ask you this: How would you feel if you leave feedback and no one replies back? It would make you feel like your opinion doesn't matter and doesn't count…right? If you want people to keep coming back to your blog, then it's important you accept and reply to comments. This way, you'll be able to get different opinions, which can lead to topic ideas and debates.

If you're using WordPress, a simple plugin will be able to install the right comment box easily.

    Slow on Social Media

If you're starting to blog then don't wait on social media and get your accounts setup right away. Social media will build reputations fast so if you haven't built any profiles, then here's something you should know: Your competition is already building their profiles, attracting readers. With competition comes the chance of you becoming obsolete faster so always stay ahead of the competition. The last thing you want is for readers to be drawn to your competition through social media because this will force them to forget about you. Social media is a great way to keep quality content in front of people so imagine the leverage your competition will have if you don't have a social presence.

I'm not saying start spending hours, but it's important to have some accounts on the major players like Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.

    Inconsistent Content

This is a mistake made by both beginners and existing bloggers so it's important you keep your focus. First, you need to know your audience and the type of content they love to read. This will help guide your content writing going forward, keeping you focused on what's most important. I like to pay close attention to the type of content my readers are sharing, looking for a pattern. Through this strategy, I can find what kind of content I should be focusing on going forward because I know my audience loves it from the social pattern. The worst mistake you can be doing is writing content that is NOT engaging enough for your readers. This is usually the case when your content topics are inconsistent, often because you don't know your audience and their engagement pattern.

    Content Formatting

With so much competition online, it's important to give your readers what they need right away. By making your content easy to read and skim, you'll be able to give them an immediate glance into what value you provide. I always write content in a way so if someone arrives on my page, they know they'll find what they're looking for. Here are a few tips I recommend:

  • Provide a breakdown of the content covered in introduction
  • Use "target" keywords in the main sub-headings
  • Breakdown the content into smaller paragraphs
  • Add images to portray your point
  • Infographics and videos work very well in illustrating the point quickly
