Different humans see the same situation quite differently. For instance:
The Kearneys, 7.5 miles west of the summit, watch Mount St. Helens erupt. The blast cloud rolls into the South Fork Toutle River valley, headed their way.
Ty Kearney: Run away!! *grabs tripod, leaps into van*
Marianna Kearney: Oh. Okay. *nonchalantly touches up sketch of the volcano, packs up equipment, looks round for other items. Oh, hey, honey, here's all the propane tanks and stuff.
Ty: ZOMG FORGET THEM! GET IN!!
You guys really have to read this section, though. Marianna's an artist and she paints the eruption with words as if she's wielding oils and brushes. You can get a copy here - purchases help support more blogging!
***
Robert Rogers, Francisco Valenzuela, and the Kearneys had to drive TOWARD the mountain at first. That must have been concerning...
Poor Valenzuela got stuck in the mud. Good thing for him Rogers was able to stop and pick him up. The two men paused shortly after to watch the eruption, and saw a lightning bolt set a tree on fire. Rogers says the volcanic haze "blocked the sun, an ominous feeling like an eclipse." The two stare dumbfounded when the eruption cloud clears enough to see the planed-off summit and the downed forests.
Valenzuela to passing loggers: Hey, can you help me get my car unstuck?
Loggers: LOL NOPE. *zoom*
Later, they get stuck in ashfall and can't find their way out. They end up back where they'd camped. They stand together as the ground steams and ash rains down, listening to radio stations that broadcast music or chitchat, unaware of the hell that St. Helens has unleashed. Imagine standing in the midst of something that looks very much like the world's end, while the outside world continues as if absolutely nothing has happened.
***
When it's clear they're gonna have to wait until the ashfall has stopped, the boys get out all the fixings to make some sammiches. Just as they're putting them together, a rescue chopper spots them. It tries to land nearby, but the rotors kick up a huge ash cloud and it's impossible to land. It flies off, probably assuming the guys making lunch will survive until it's safe to collect them.
Valenzuela: "Ash-and-cheese sandwiches we had now."
LOL.
(They drove out safely later that afternoon.)
***
Dennis Smith and friends, Sunday morning: Darn it, Mount St. Helens, y u no do anything?
Pat: "The mountain's vibrating!"
Mount St. Helens falls down and goes ba-boom.
St. Helens: U happy nao?
The guys: *run away screaming*
St. Helens: Heh heh heh.
***
The Sullivans and Mark Dahl watch the eruption begin.
Joe Sullivan: Neato!
Mark: Cool, man!
Moments later, the lateral blast rolls toward them.
Joe: Not cool!
They flee, which involves driving toward the volcano for a stretch in order to stay on high ground. The blast pulls back before it reaches them, and they make it out of the immediate area. On Forest Service roads along the Kalama, they see fishermen in boats.
Joe: Mountain go boom! Top gone! U get off river nao.
Fishermen: Pfft, whatevs. *continue fishing*
People: when a frantic family tells you the top of the mountain just came off, and that mountain happens to be the source of the river you're on, stop fishing and go to high ground immediately, before you get stuck in a lahar. We're about to find out how very much it sucks. Don't find out firsthand.
***
Next up is David Crockett. We've done his story! We even have video! Woo-hoo! Incidentally, if you stop at Hoffstadt Bluffs on your way up to the volcano, you can now see his car on display. It's super great!
***
So. If you're camping on a riverbank 26 miles downstream of an active volcano, you may hear tranquil water become rapids.
Don't stop to grab your stuff. Just flee to the highest ground you can find, as fast as you can go.
Roald Reitan and Venus Dergan were caught in a lahar on the South Fork Toutle River. As they grabbed their stuff and hoofed it to the car, they got to see:
1. Small logs flowing down a river that was suddenly full of rapids and the color of chocolate milk. The logs fill it from bank to bank.
2. Those logs are followed by larger and larger logs as the river rises.
3. Two minutes later, a bloody great railroad trestle comes bopping around the river bend.
4. The trestle is being pushed by a ginormous mass of logs, "huge as Greyhound buses," piled ten feet higher than it.
5. While the flood behind merrily mows trees off the bank for nearly a dozen yards on either side.
6. And then the trestle breaks, the logs go, "Whee! Freedom!" and proceed to spill all over the place, blocking in the car you've been so frantically trying to pack.
This happens in a few minutes. Stuff is just stuff. Flees for your lives, which cannot be replaced.
And, just in case you doubt bus-sized trees, here is a local specimen. We grow 'em big here in the PNW.
***
Roald and Venus climb to the roof of their car, but it's no good: they get swept up in the lahar. Even 26 miles from the volcano, it's warm, almost hot - around 80 degrees F. They try to cling to logs, but it's nearly impossible. For five terrifying minutes, they get rolled, rocked, battered, bruised, crushed, and skinned by logs, and Venus almost drowns in the mud. Roald finally gets properly balanced on his log and, after several attempts, pulls her up. They ride their log, watch their car float by, and eventually are able to scramble over logjams to shore. They use the depths to which various chemical toilets are buried to gauge where the mud is shallow enough to slog out. They get to higher ground and hike, barefoot and injured, back toward the bridge, where people see them and are able to rescue them.
It takes three washes at the hospital before staff can get enough mud off to find and treat Venus's wounds. Both of them survive with just a few strains, breaks, and severe scrapes.
Really, really try not to ever get stuck in a lahar, though...

It is revisiting its rules to make it clear what it deems to be abusive behavior and banned content.
To curb use of Twitter by ISISMessages intended to threaten people or promote violence and terrorism are already banned under Twitter's Abusive Behavior Policy. Its new updated rules include new language for what falls under abusive behavior.
"We also do not allow accounts whose primary purpose is inciting harm towards others on the basis of these categories," reads a new line added to its existing rules.
"It is always open to embracing and encouraging different opinions but it will not tolerate behavior intended to harass, intimidate, or use fear to silence another user's voice," the San Francisco-based company said in a blog post on Wednesday.
The change from the micro-blogging firm comes at a time when radical terrorist groups such as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) have gained a strong presence on the platform. Such groups use the site to spread their messages and communicate with followers.
Encouraging users to participate aggressivelyTwitter not only allows users to block or mute accounts that they find to be abusive but also allows them to ask for deletion of offending tweets if they are found to be violating the company's rules. A user's account will be locked out altogether if he or she refuses to comply.
Such a change will work in the company's favor by encouraging users who flag accounts guilty of breaking the rules to report abuse more aggressively, said J. M. Berger, who is a coauthor of a March 2015 Brookings Institute census of ISIS Twitter use. The census found that from September 2014 to December 2014, ISIS operated at least 46,000 accounts.

The author spends a great deal of time blogging about his favorite NFL teams, the New York Jets and the New York Giants.
In a post titled "Evil Foiled! Good Triumphant! Jets Win, Jets Win, Jets Win!!!" Martin mocked the Patriots for their 26-20 overtime loss to the Jets.
The Patriots and Bill Belichick elected to kick to start overtime, and the author had a comedic take on the scrutinized decision. Martin was thankful for the gift from man he often refers to as "Evil Little Bill."

From his blog post:
"I could feel the victory slipping away as we went to overtime, and the stake was poised above my heart... they tossed the coin, and the Pats won, and the darkness was closing in around me as it has so many times before...
"Only then the Pats chose to kick off. Instead of receiving, and putting the hands of Tom Brady, the most dangerous mutha in football, Evil Little Bill decided that Fitz and the Jets should have it. Hee hee. Hoo ha. Oh, sweet. Thanks, Bill. What a lovely Christmas present."
Ealier in the post, Martin rejoiced at the efforts of Jets' Ryan Fitzpatrick and Bilal Powell—but not before taking a few shots at the Patriots.
"Hey, the Jets won! Life is magical and full of joy!
"Okay, okay, it was not the SuperBowl [sic] or anything, just a regular season game. But it was against the New England Patriots, the Horror Out of Boston, the Blue-and-White Walkers from Beyond the Wall, led by Evil Little Bill himself."
In Game of Thrones, a pirate named Belicho is eaten by Giants—likely an allusion to Belichick's two Super Bowl losses to the Giants. Perhaps, Martin is one step closer to writing a Jets-related piece of lore to this Belicho character.

Twitter users in India may soon be able to pay their bills though the micro-blogging site, the media reported. The company has announced a partnership with India-based start-up Lookup to enable users send a direct message to @lookuplite in order to book appointments, inquire about services and make transactions with businesses, Techcrunch reported.

Curre ntly, users can buy directly within the social network thorough Twitter's 'Buy' button. In the new arrangement, orders and payments would be fulfilled separately and offline with Twitter simply facilitating the conversation.
Lookup will use Twitter's API, as well as its monitoring capabilities, to handle connecting the customer to the prospective merchant.
Instead of connecting users through phone numbers, Lookup instead uses Google Maps to give users a view of all the retailers in their area.

Khan who welcomed the surprise visit of Modi to Lahore on Friday took to social micro-blogging website Twitter for a veiled swipe at the alleged involvement of an Indian businessman.
"Meetings of PMs through business associates undermine the detente process and raise questions of conflict of interest," he tweeted.
"We welcome the thaw in Pak-India relations but to have a business associate arrange the two prime minister meeting has an underlying conflict of interest.
"Meeting of the two prime ministers, from secret Kathmandu one to Lahore one, must be through institutional frameworks with (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) MFA in the loop for sustainability," he said.
The cricketer-turned-politician was also critical of reports that Indian steel tycoon Sajjan Jindal could have been instrumental in the latest meeting after he reportedly arranged a secret meeting of the two in Kathmandu on the sidelines of the last SAARC summit.
Jindal was in Lahore when Modi landed there for stopover to see Sharif.
According to local media, Jindal has personal ties with Sharif and was invited for the marriage of Sharif's grand- daughter.
Modi stayed for over two hours in Lahore on his way back home from Afghanistan on Friday during which he held talks with Sharif at his Raiwind house.

And believe it or not, many life experiences can propel you into your career passion. While you don't want to trivialize tragic events, you can take a major life-changing happening–whether positive or negative–and turn it into a livelihood and inspire others in the process.
"We all agree life-changing events are inevitable, but it's how we respond to them that defines success or failure," explained life coach Sheila Swanson McIntyre of Abundant Life Coaching. "Some of the most devastating events can be the most freeing and inspirational. It forces us to step outside our comfort zone and look for new and creative ways to move forward. Quite often people have the desire to change careers, leave an abusive relationship or try something new but the fear of the unknown keeps them from progressing past day dreaming."
That's what Erika Nicole Kendall did when she embarked on a fitness quest. She started blogging her weight loss and fitness journey via A Black Girl's Guide To Weight Loss (BGG2WL) in 2009. The site eventually became a full-fledged business, though at first Kendall admitted it was sort of a self journal. "Honestly, I just wanted a space where I could keep a record of what I was learning on my journey. I didn't think anything about this becoming what it has thus far—I just wanted a space for intellectual accountability. I could never look myself in the eyes and say, 'I didn't learn that.' I wrote 1,000 words on it!"
Kendall admitted the public's response to her initial blog was a bit unbelievable. "But then I realized what BGG2WL represented to so many women–a space where people could come and get that kind of communal learning like you'd get from a heart to heart with a big sister," she said. "Once people started referring to me as their 'big sister in their head' or their 'BFF in their head,' it started to make more sense to me."
Needless to say A Black Girl's Guide To Weight Loss took on a life of its own, and Kendall went with it. On the blog she now covers everything from weight loss and wellness to fitness and body image and even features recipes. And the site has actually opened various opportunities for Kendall. "My primary goal with being self-employed was being able to stay home and be with my daughter, and over the course of the blog I've picked up a husband and–most recently–another child, so I'd say the most valuable opportunity has to have been the ability to stay home and spend more time with my family," she said. "In terms of non-family related benefits, I've had the privilege to partner with major brands like Microsoft, the American Heart Association, ASICS, and even the U.S. Army in ways that have aligned with my principles instead of compromising them. I've been able to bring my particular kind of writing to places like NPR, Salon, EBONY.com, Fusion, US News, I mean all kinds of places. I mean, the hard work has really paid off."
Now Kendall is looking at new ways to grow her brand. "At this point, the aim is to begin teaching live classes this coming summer, and there's a book on the horizon! So, keep your eyes peeled for that!," she teased.
While Kendall's lifestyle-change-turned-business was spurred by a positive life event, even events that would otherwise be deemed as negative can create new life ventures. "Most often those 'devastating' circumstances surprise a person. Their first response is not, 'How am I going to use this as a business launch pad?' But once they have done so much research, connecting, reaching out and learning about how to cope, learning what resources are available, it is almost like going to graduate school," explained Vivian Geffen, founder of CreativityMuse, who coaches and trains people on the use of Creative Thinking for personal transformation."If that person is cognizant, and finds themselves in a position of knowing what others in the same boat don't know, then they find themselves in a position of helping others as an act of service. If that then gains momentum and they find themselves devoting much time and energy to it, then, if they are of a mind to do so, they start to ask how to turn this into a business."
That's essentially what McIntyre did when she became a life coach. "I'll use my own experience as an example. I struggled with alcohol addiction for 10 years. I entered several treatment centers, tried hypnosis, and acupuncture, all with no success. During this difficult journey I struggled with a desire to reinvent myself but had no idea what direction to go. One day I discovered the Life Coaching program I now teach and it was like being struck by lightning. I knew deep in my soul that this was what I had been searching for. Shortly after I received my certification I stopped drinking. But it wasn't like any other time before. This time it was as instant as, one day I wanted to drink—the next day I didn't. All desire, all compulsion had completely disappeared. It was my miracle.
"Since then, my Life Coaching business has been the most rewarding and inspiring work I have ever done," she added. "I have found my passion. This is what makes life changing events spectacular opportunities to recreate a fulfilling and abundant life."
Of course, it is a process–and not a quick heal. You must be prepared to share your experience openly and honestly with others. And you have to be mentally ready for the transformation. As Geffen explained, "It takes clarity, presence of mind, willingness to say yes when asked to share or help, an abiding sense of purpose, some luck and a population of people who want to know about what you have learned. It takes connecting to a purpose larger than the devastation of the experience you just went through and deciding that it is worth all the hard work that starting any new venture will require."
