Due to the nature of real estate and the ever-changing ebb and flow of business, keeping up with the basics is often enough to occupy every spare moment. In this cycle of "just get it done," public relations innovation most often falls to the wayside. At 5WPR, we oversee many Real Estate firms and agents, and have identified some great ways to stand out amongst the competition.
Obviously, an agent's success or failure largely depends upon personal image. This personal image must be one of polish, success and fruitful activity for clients. In order to remain at the top of your market's competitive landscape, you simply must invest in your own public relations, whether that is through application of your own elbow grease or that of an assistant. To go beyond standard press releases to broaden your reach using public relations, try some of the following tactics. Even integrating two or three of these over the next months and sticking with them will ensure continued momentum for your real estate image.
Remain consistent with your blog…If you do not yet have a blog, you are behind the curve. A blog can consist of just a few thoughts you may have about a particular listing, opportunity or selling strategy. You do not have to be Hemingway to create a thriving blog. What you do need is consistency. Whatever you write, ensure you post three blogs per week, spread out over the course of the week. Three is a great number for keeping you relevant, top of mind and consistent without the blog becoming unmanageable. Anything less and you become lost in the fray. Too many, and you are focusing too much energy which could be used to diversify in your exposure tactics.
Partner for social media reciprocity…You can provide professionals or brands in your area with social media exchanges. Make a deal to trade a set number of tweets, pins, posts or other social media activity with your partners. For example, if you know a tiling professional with an excellent reputation who has Twitter account with a large following, offer to tweet a set number of images for that contractor over a set period of time, linking back to the contractor's website or social media account. In return, you can ask for a specified number of trade out mentions, maybe for use as-needed when you are urgently trying to find a buyer for a particular property. Rainy day partners can be wonderful to have in your pocket.
Get featured locally and online…Talk to your local newspaper or area magazines, whether digital or in print, about being a guest writer. Have them either assign subject matter for which you develop content or ask if you can pitch stories you will write. Just know that when doing so with a quality, legitimate media outlet, they will likely want ownership and solo rights to your piece. That works fine, because you blogging about a published and referenced article is far more powerful than just posting one. New and local publications are most willing to accept guest writers. One such publication is Roulez Magazine. They put out a call for local content writers in late July of 2015, seeking local viewpoints about living within specific areas of the country. Today, this is how such publications grow.
Partner with local fashion photographers…Every area in the country, no matter how small the town, has at least one semi-professional fashion photographer, or at least those who need settings for individual and family portraits. Contact professional photographers in your area and let them know you will request permission of clients for use of their property for a half-day or single day photo shoot, in exchange for the photographer's social media use of the photo with realty information imposed and both you and your client gaining photo usage rights. Fashion photographers for aspiring models or music groups are always in need of fresh scenes and even the worst of home interiors can create amazing fashion backdrops. Think, Fiona Apple's "Criminal" music video. While still photographers create the least property havoc for this, television commercial tapings and other videography can also be conducted.
Use video and video channels..You may be highly versed with Twitter. However, are you gaining enough video exposure? Video is the content of choice for most web surfers today. Get creative with videos, going beyond home tours. Perhaps interviewing local celebrities or professionals during a home walkthrough could be your angle, much as Vogue Magazine does as part of their "73 Questions" series. Get creative and you will go viral. That exposure will add to the odds of a potential buyer gaining interest.
Get more creative with your events and opens…Think just a bit bolder when developing your open houses and other events. While going too far over the edge as part of a public open will entice people in just for the event's sake, using invitation-only events will ensure crowd quality and ongoing attention to the event's purpose beyond a theme. Prequalify your invitation list and give them something to remember as part of the site visit. Suggestions may include partnering with a local restaurant to provide branded hors d'oeuvres with their restaurant or catering business cards on the hors d'oeuvres platters, throughout the property or on your invitations. This serves a restaurant or caterer well, as who dines out more often than real estate agents and homeowners? Nobody.
Network with HR and marketing executives to become corporate "official real estate agent" for relocating personnel…Sports teams sometimes have "designated real estate agents" or official ones. The agent claims the title and the team refers all incoming athletes to that one agent, due to confidentiality and other trust built up over time. For major organizations, this can work well for incoming personnel who almost always need a referral. The key is to always provide the absolute best possible service, in order to maintain your status.
Obtain client reviews and testimonials…This takes persistence but pays off in spades. One of the biggest influencers online today is peer reviews. Get reviewed on sites offering such options or gain client testimonials for consistent posting on your website.
Provide faces to your closed deals…In lieu of tweeting or posting a "hooray me" kind of self-endorsement on social media when you make a sale, go for something more endearing and humble. Ask your clients if you can take their photo and ask them a few questions about their experience with you and how they feel about their new home. If the client does not want to appear, ask if their pet can. Nothing is more viral than a happy pet with a sense of humor. Keep it light and short and this will gain traction for you. Everyone loves their 15 minutes of fame.
Work on your own personal image…Regardless of what tactics you use for public relations exposure, your biggest PR tool is your own image. This image is both physical and reputation. Improve your image and remain updated, fresh and positive. Ensure your best foot is put forward, regardless of whether you are around town for personal time or business. Protect your image and be a good human. People today value that above all else.

You'll have to forgive me for breaking with my typical conversational decorum for this, my final edition of While We're Waiting. It too will be my final article as a regular contributor of the Waiting For Next Year crüe. This may come as a shock to my fellow staff for they did not receive any prior indication from yours truly and are learning of this at the same time as you readers are. I struggled a bit thinking about the title of my farewell speech, so I went to an old standby, somehow tying it into Harry Potter. So, let's talk a little about the how, when, and why that's led me to this point.
I was a very different person when co-founder Rick Grayshock reached out to me in the spring of 2011, just as I was finishing up my degree at Ohio State, to join Waiting For Next Year. I had been blogging in some capacity on my own for nearly four years, starting on a modified MySpace page that I called "Cleveland Sports Blog", then eventually purchasing a domain name, CurseOfCleveland.com, and joining the Bloguin network. Two of my close friends, J.V. and Kyle, were sources of constant encouragement, and I would have never gotten the thing off the ground without their help. When LeBron left in the summer of 2010, my sportswriting soul was crushed. I just didn't have #twtw (in this case, the will to write) anymore, and I shut down my own site.
I continued to remain active on Twitter, and I eventually spent a brief time at former WFNY colleague, SLAM Magazine contributor, and all-around-nice-guy Brendan Bowers's site, Stepien Rules. From there, a few short months later, I caught the eye of the WFNY triumvirate, and I started during the Big Ten Conference Tournament in March 2011.
WFNY is also a very different entity since I joined up. When I began, there were no podcasts, no Behind The Box Score, no Cavalier film rooms, Rick did WWW almost exclusively, email chains rather than Slack was the way we communicated and collaborated, we had assigned weekend editors, and the cast was far different than it is today. The teams were different too. The Cavs had yet to draft Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson and were in the painful teardown aftermath of the first LBJ era. The Tribe was in the middle of middling #Actaball. The Buckeyes had just suspended Jim Tressel and would dismiss him two months later. The Browns…. well, not everything was different.
From the beginning, I've never shied away from being passionate in my (hopefully) well-formed opinions and observations, in my interactions with readers, commenters, followers, and peers, and in my craft. The responsibility of being a WFNY contributor is something I never took lightly. I don't know if the WFNY gang will ever know how much of a tremendous source of pride being a part of this journey for four and a half years has been. They'll probably never fully understand just how much it meant to me to be able to share a bit of me with all of you.
With that passion, however, came frustration, anger, disagreements and dust-ups over time. That includes internally. While I want to make it clear that I am leaving on my own terms and without any influence from above, it would be dishonest to say that some creative differences and ownership decisions were not contributing factors to my decision to step away from an active role at WFNY at this time.
I've struggled with this decision and have thought about it a lot over the past few weeks, but I've simply come to the conclusion that it is time. I've seen Rick, TD, Jon, Jacob (a couple of times), Bowers, Brendan Porath, and many others either hang them up for other ventures or move on for personal or professional reasons. Nothing lasts forever. I never thought about how long I would be doing this when I started blogging in my college dorm room at 18 years old, and my only goal was to see it through until there was a Cleveland sports championship.
And that was ultimately the one question I dwelled on for some time: Am I at peace with not being an active part of WFNY should Next Year finally be the year that the drought ends?
I've let go of pieces of my involvement a little bit a time. First, it was deciding to focus almost solely on basketball. This past spring, I went without tweeting for nearly two months. Following the end of the Cavs' run, I've taken a few weeks without writing much of anything. I've always been of the belief that nothing is worth doing half-assed, so I wanted to make this decision in the basketball offseason rather than slowly fading into the background without letting the site owners know exactly where I stand and giving them time to fill my place. I owe Scott, Andrew, Craig, and company at least that and so much more. I can sleep well knowing that I went out writing full-blast during this playoff run with more film rooms than I did all regular season. It makes it easier to step away knowing there is a stable of writers willing and able to cover the Cavs as well.
Some of this decision was about taking some time out and going back to the simpler days for me. I could be a fan and say angry or silly things without thinking about what the "WFNY-" in front of my twitter handle portrayed. I miss being able to be pessimistic short-term yet optimistic long-term, a dabbler and fan of advanced stats without being a slave to them, and I miss not caring about a lot of what Twitter and TV personalities and sports bloggers try to get you to care about. Maybe Trevor Bauer said it best yesterday.
Still, I enjoy writing too much to give it up cold turkey, but I am content with ending my time in the high-profile blogging game for now. So, what's next? First, I have switched my Twitter handle to @TeedUpKirk. This handle has multiple meanings for me. First, I love (attempting to play the game of) golf. Second, I have both received and issued technical fouls in my basketball lifetime as a player and official, and it's a nod to my propensity to get heated at times watching and analyzing the game that I love. Will this be the last time you see my name on the WFNY site? Perhaps not. I truly can call many of my colleagues at WFNY friends, and maybe a time will come in the future when circumstances change. When the itch is there, I have the avenues to scratch it as I still own CurseofCleveland.com and may populate that from time to time.
The memories, however, are umpteen. Personally, from constructing Finals film rooms to the #TankStrong movement to NBA Draft Lotteries and picks to #ColumbusIsNotCleveland to #LOBOB to Uni Talk to my time as a weekend warrior to 2am Behind The Box Scores to Buckeye basketball to countless laughs on the #giphy and #random channels of Slack (I may miss #coffeegirl most of all). The WFNY crucible undeniably made me a better writer. Being exposed to all angles of how a large operation like this runs and how ideas are generated and nurtured has been a true pleasure. Reading the work of many of my fellow colleagues has made me laugh, think, cry, question, reconsider, and believe. I'll now primarily go back to what I was prior to March 2011, a reader and a fan of the work done on these pages.
At the end of the day, I hope through it all that my work was worth reading and the journey was worth sharing. I know that the reciprocal was certainly true. It was thoroughly worth all of the time and effort, and I'd get on the ride and answer the call from Rick all over again.
I'll see you all at the parade.

Below he previews the third Investec Ashes Test in his home city of Birmingham, examines the importance of the Chance to Shine project, and looks back on a welcome break from the intensity of the Test arena.
Coming back to Edgbaston is always a special feeling for me, but when I first came here as a nine-year-old for trials with the under-11s, how could I imagine that I'd be back here to play for England in an Ashes Test?
That trial was in the old indoor school, which shows how long ago it was. The place has changed a bit since then, it's a really fantastic stadium now, and as a Birmingham boy I can tell you that people here are buzzing about having an England-Australia Test back in the city.
I can't believe it's 10 years since that famous game when England won with the catch down the leg side. I was playing under-19s cricket that summer so it was definitely a long time ago, and still with Warwickshire before I joined Worcestershire the following season.
There was no game at Edgbaston in the 2013 Ashes series, and there hasn't been a Test here at all for the last three summers. So this is a special week for everyone who loves cricket in the city - you can imagine how it feels for me being able to play in it.
I'm going to have a lot of family and relatives and stuff, because they have all been looking forward to this match too. I've talked in the past about the importance of the support of my family, especially my father and brothers, in helping me get to this point in my career.
England have been good as well, letting me mix things up and spend some time at home with my family rather than all the time in the hotel.
I've been thinking a bit about the journey I've taken to get to this point. Last Wednesday I went back to Sparkhill Park, where I did a lot of messing about as a kid, for a Chance to Shine event.
It's always a pleasure to support Chance to Shine because it's so important for English cricket to work hard to get people in the cities without loads of money to get hooked on the game, like I did. As I said to the journalists who were there that day in the rain, I think cricket can be a good influence on young people from backgrounds like mine. It teaches you discipline, and to be streetwise.
The gap between Tests gave me the chance to do things like that.
To be honest we needed the break after Lord's. You generally do after back-to-back Tests, because they do take their toll mentally more than anything, and especially after the way we played at Lord's.
We've had time to get over that now, the mood in practice at Edgbaston was fine, the boys are good - we've all had a break from each other, and it was good to come back together and talk about getting things right again.
It's not hard to be positive going into the game. We showed what we can do by beating them convincingly in the first game down in Cardiff, so even after what happened at Lord's it's all square and like a best of three Test series now.
I had one more reminder of my youth before practice on Monday morning, when I went out to Malvern School to make some presentations to the young lads who have been picked for this year's Bunbury Festival.
It's 13 years now since I was a young lad like them in Billericay in Essex, feeling the excitement I could see on all their faces. Most of the England squad played in the festival at one time or another - I think Adil Rashid was there with me, and now here we are together again in the England squad.
Like I said to the guys at Sparkhill Park, it shows that you can achieve your dreams. Who'd have thought a Birmingham boy like me could be at Edgbaston on Wednesday morning, determined with the rest of the team to come back against the Aussies?

On July 21, Neha took to the micro-blogging site and wrote: "One rain and the city comes to a standstill. Good governance is not about selfies and making us do yoga, it's making sure your citizens are safe."
The post, many thought, took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who emphasises the importance of yoga and has made headlines for going on a selfie spree on several occasions.
But, in a statement issued on Monday, Neha said that "the intention of my tweet was never to demean or personally attack anyone".
Her statement read: "It was the mere frustration of a helpless citizen of Mumbai. I've tried to take the high road on the outcome and ignore the people who've abused me and my family ad nauseam online.
"But I was intimidated as protestors stood outside my house. I am grateful to our police for protecting us and request people to see that my words were about a subject and not a person. My goal was never to hurt anyone's sentiments.
"I have wholeheartedly and consistently supported the government's movements like 'Yoga Day' and 'Swachh Bharat' as I will do in the future as well. I hope we can focus on the issues that matter and that my appeal to improve our civic amenities is taken in the right way."

Omar posted on micro-blogging site Twitter: "One critical question - did he (Memon) return from Pakistan on the back of an understanding and if he did, was this disclosed?"
He was reacting to a tweet by author Suhel Seth who had said that the court verdict on the 1993 Mumbai blast convict can be commented upon but not challenged.
"For me Yakub Memon's case is cut and dry. The courts have convicted him and they have sentenced him. We can comment, not challenge," Seth had tweeted.
Following Omar's tweet, Seth said it is the travesty of justice if the court had not taken into consideration the reports that Memon had returned to India following an understanding with some intelligence officials.
"Valid point which I am sure the courts have gone into and if not, then it is a travesty of our justice system," Seth wrote in another tweet, as per PTI.
Former Research and Analysis (RAW) officer B Raman, in an article written in 2007, had written that Memon, whose curative petition was rejected by the Supreme Court earlier this week, had cooperated with the establishment in the Mumbai blasts case.
Meanwhile, in the new petition urging stay against imminent execution of Yakub, the signatories claimed that there are "substantive and fresh grounds" that can be considered on merits.
Memon is scheduled to be executed on July 30 as per the execution warrant issued by TADA Court.
The petition has come at a time when there is a huge political controversy over Memon's hanging and the BJP has condemned the remarks by parties against the hanging of Memon saying such a defence is happening due to "petty politics".
BJP MP Sinha, who had a day before met and praised Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has once again gone against the party's stand on the Memon issue.
In the 15-page petition, the signatories have cited various legal points and international committments to argue that Memon should not be hanged.
"We most humbly request your Excellency to consider the case of Yakub Abdul Razak Memon and spare him from the noose of death for a crime that was master-minded by someone else to communally divide the country. Grant of mercy in this case will send out a message that while this country will not tolerate acts of terrorism, as a nation we are committed to equal application of the power of mercy and values of forgiveness, and justice. Blood letting and human sacrifice will not make this country a safer place; it will, however, degrade us all," the signatories said.
Besides Sinha and Jethmalani, those, who have signed the petition include MPs like Mani Shankar Aiyar (Congress), Majeed Memon (NCP), Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M), D Raja (CPI), K T S Tulsi and H K Dua (nominated) and T Siva (DMK), former CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat, CPI(ML)-Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, Brinda Karat (CPI-M) and filmmakers and actors like Naseeruddin Shah and Mahesh Bhatt, M K Raina and Tushar Gandhi.
It also included various academicians, members of the legal fraternity, activists and retired judges - Justice Panachand Jain, Justice HS Bedi, Justice PB Sawant, Justice H Suresh, Justice K P Siva Subramaniam, Justice S N Bhargava, Justice (retd) K Chandru, and Justice Nagmohan Das, noted lawyer Indira Jaising.
Others include academicians like Irfan Habib, Arjun Dev, D N Jha, and social activists Aruna Roy, Jean Dreze and John Dayal.
They cited that India is a signatory to an international commitment to abolish death penalty and hence death penalty cannot be imposed in India.
"Yakub Memon was not given advance notice of the death warrant hearing and as a result of which he and his lawyers could not participate and contest the issuance of the death warrant. Lack of hearing makes the present death warrant void," they said, citing a Supreme Court decision in the May 2015 Shabnam versus Union of India and Others case.
They said that there are some very "disturbing" aspects of this case which make the award of death sentence to Yakub Memon as "grossly unfair, arbitrary and excessive".
"Yakub Memon has served more than 20 years in prison since his arrest. His trial took 14 years to complete. While the Supreme Court used this long period of incarceration as a mitigating circumstance to commute the death sentences of the other 10 co-accused persons, it applied a different yardstick to Yakub. The Supreme Court has repeatedly held that lengthy incarceration during pendency of appeal in death cases is a significant mitigating circumstance which ought to be considered in determination of sentence. In the interests of justice we request you to give due importance to this," they said.
They also argued that Memon is mentally unfit for execution as he has been suffering from schizophrenia for the last 20 years. His mental condition has been certified by jail doctors. Schizophrenia as a mental illness has been held by the Supreme Court to render a convict unfit for execution," they said.
They have also cited that commutation of death sentences of convicts in other terror cases like late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
"It is also worthwhile to note that death sentences imposed on the aides of Veerappan (convicted and sentenced to death under TADA), Rajiv Gandhi killers and Devender Pal Singh Bhullar have been commuted recently by Supreme Court. While the mercy petitions of Verappan's aides, Rajiv Gandhi's three killers and Devender Pal Singh Bhullar were decided belatedly by the President, thereby giving them the claim of delay jurisprudence, the Home Ministry has moved swiftly to reject Yakub Abdul Razak Memon's mercy's petition," they alleged.
The petitioners said that it seemed that "subjective factors" were the basis of decisions which lead to arbitrary actions.
They also argued that the death sentence has been awarded under TADA which was repealed.
"Memon has been tried and sentenced to death under TADA, a special law which was repealed by Parliament on account of it having been used to target minorities," they said and referred to a Supreme Court judgement, which according to them doubted the legality of prosecutions pursued after the repeal of TADA. Given the highly compromised rule of law credentials of TADA, executing Yakub Memon will perpetuate the dark legacy of this law," they said.

Phases of the moon:
Full Moon Rising
Moonflowers have become a regular vine growing in my summer garden. Their flowers are as big as a pizza (well, a personal pan pizza size) and when blooming, the scent really can send you into straight over the edge to bliss.
I live in the northeast, so I admittedly cheat and buy plants already with a good start from my local garden center. They don't stock a LOT of these vines, but they do stock them regularly every year. Must be that me and a few others in my area are die-hard moonflower nuts!
Once planted and the heat of summer hits us, the vines really do take off. They can grow between 6" to a foot every day! They will grow especially quickly once you train them up onto something. And once buds begin to form, they will bloom and their heavenly scent will waft daily through your garden as dusk falls.
Above took about 20 minutes for the bud to burst fully open. I've seen flowers open more quickly - and have noticed it does depend on humidity level and temperature.
This year I went a bit moon loony and planted them in several spots throughout my yard. The one I have growing over the back arbor trellis seems to be doing the best, with buds and flowers erupting earlier than all other vines. It gets morning sun, but not the full strength since the house blocks some of it. Then in the height of the noon sun, it wilts, but not from lack of water, but from the direct sun hitting it. As the sun moves over, turgidity resumes.
My experiment last winter to bring in plants grown in pots to see if I could overwinter failed - l think because I forgot to water them regularly so the roots wouldn't dry out completely. oops! But since I've successfully overwintered other tropical vines like passion flower and mandevilla, I believe I can do the same with a moonflower vine so I can get an even earlier head start with blooms come the next growing season. We'll see what happens this winter. The flowers photographed in this diary is a plant that I am currently growing in a very large plastic pot buttressed up against the arbor trellis.
When the sun comes up
and as the moon wanes,
passion still arises...

I enjoyed it. But I had trouble coming up with content. I thought blogging about my feelings would be easier since I don't have to make anything up.
But in a lot of ways it's more difficult.
For one, it makes me feel arrogant. Why would I expect other people to care about my autism? Everyone has problems.
But my therapist thinks personal writing is a great idea for people on the spectrum. A lot of us have a condition called alexithymia. It makes it difficult to identify what we and other people are feeling. We feel a lot of things subconsciously, but we don't always know how to articulate them. Writing can help us bring those feelings to the surface.
And it doesn't have to be narcissistic. Seriously. Look at the popularity of personal essays right now. Pretty much every publication, including the New York Times, has a major section devoted to them.
Because feelings are pretty universal.
Personal essays normalize the things a lot of us are embarrassed about. They show us how someone else has dealt with the same problems we have. People read blogs like PsychCentral so they can feel less alone.
That's not to say you shouldn't choose your words carefully, though. Personal writing is a major balancing act. The most-read writers on here seem to have it down pat. I'm still wondering what the appropriate balance is between entries about my own life, advice for others, and autism research and politics. Where's the line between using myself as a helpful example and imposing on readers? If you have problems understanding boundaries (and many autistic people do) it's a difficult line to walk.
And of course, my biggest fear is that nobody's going to read this fucking blog because I could be as uncharismatic on the page as I am in real life.
I moved to New York to go to design school. The feedback I'm getting says I have talent but I just don't have the personality to succeed in the field. And they're right. I've had a lot of trouble keeping up in class and at my internships. This was one of my biggest dreams since I was little, and now I'm pretty sure it's not an option for me.
Because I'm autistic.
I write about having autism because it makes me feel less alone. I love reading people's comments. I love knowing that I've managed to strike a tiny chord in someone else's mind that shows them they're not the only freak out there. It gives me a purpose.
So I'm going to keep writing.

Users of popular web-based blogging software WordPress have been urged to update after a security vulnerability was discovered.
Users on versions 4.2.2 and earlier are affected by a "critical" cross-site scripting flaw, allowing someone with "contributor" or "author" roles to take over a site. (An earlier, cached version of the blog post said "critical," which has since been taken out. We've reached out to WordPress for more on this.)
Cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks allow a hacker or malicious actor to embed malicious code in a website's code.
The flaw was found internally by members of WordPress' security team.
The update also fixes a total of 20 flaws, including one where it "was possible for a user with Subscriber permissions to create a draft through Quick Draft."
